Assigning Countries
A general question about assigning countries:
So, if me and a group of friends want to agree to pick the countries ourselves, is there a way to do that? I know mods can reassign countries based on previous threads, but is there a way that, if all the players in the game agree, they can be changed without the use of a mod? The game I'd like to have specific countries for is gameID=133754, if that helps at all. Thanks

Something New: School of War Study Group
We had so much player interest in the Winter SoW game that it was suggested we do a Study Group game for those not in the main game. Details inside.

Consequentialism versus Deontology
In the game of Diplomacy, the emphasis is - in my opinion - on one's mastery of Realpolitik. To borrow from Wikipedia, it is "politics or diplomacy based primarily on power and on practical and material factors and considerations, rather than explicit ideological notions or moral or ethical premises." In other words, making the best of the situation.

@hecks, well actually given some of the recent breakthroughs in medicine there is a very good chance that some of the youngest people currently alive will indeed live to be 110.

@Draug,
But what if there's a rapture? That'll impact my numbers. Nothing throws off demographers like an apocalypse.
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Jan 14 UTC
Some of us don't believe the rapture will come in the form of bodies magically disappearing. More like their souls will suddenly leave and a bunch of dead bodies will be behind the wheels of cars and airplanes and trains and you poor saps who get to go on living will be dodging all kinds of moving vehicles for the next several hours. :-)

Actually, I can't even say what the pure Lutheran view is on that as I don't really give a fuck and don't honestly believe any of that will happen. I'm more of a "something goes boom and mankind is simply destroyed" like a meteor or the sun exploding or something. That or we do it to ourselves quickly or slowly. Revelations was written as prophecy which is not always to be literally interpreted.

@2WL - Last time I rode on a bus, it didn't have a seatbelts. And what the fuck is up with airplanes and seatbelts. They think being strapped to my seat with my tray table up and my head between my legs is gonna save me should the plane crash into the side of a mountain? And they really have to give me the spiel about flotation devices when I am flying from Cincinnati to Denver? What, we are going to happen to crash land in some lake?

Draugnar (0 DX)

Where do you get food anymore? Unless it is a flight that crosses a major body of water or coast to coast, they don't serve meals anymore.

Hecks "...there's only one answer: Burn the hospitals. Smash the pharmacies. Kill the doctors." That's 3 answers.
hecks (164 D)
14 Jan 14 UTC
No, it's one answer, consisting of a three-step plan. First we burn the hospitals, then we smash the pharmacies, then we kill the doctors. Any of the steps alone would be insufficient.
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Jan 14 UTC
Burn the prisons, smash the courthouses and kill the lawyers, judges, and cops.

Sounds like there's one thing Libertarians, Liberals, and Anarchists can all agree on: SMASH THE STATE!
krellin (80 DX)
14 Jan 14 UTC
I don't think Libertarians or Liberals want to smash the state. uhhhh....Libtards THRIVE on state control, and Libertarians and Conservatives want to minimize it, not eliminate it.

Note Republipukes and Demon-crats are independent from the above philosophical descriptors...

And my own sarcasm eluded you.

But I'm not gonna compete on your terms and call you names like "the Murder Lobby" even though you gleefully go off and help unwed mom's to be kill their little babies and have complete disdain for the education system in which you work, passing students who you know you shouldn't and having drinks every knight with those pedophiles you call you fellow teachers which, using your own logic of guilt by association, makes you a pedophile too.
Putin33 (111 D)

I don't know what having drinks with knights has to do with you being an advocate of getting murderers cheap and easy access to guns.

"...advocate of getting murderers cheap and easy access to guns. ..."

Yeah...let's keep this discussion civil. Let's talk about how those pedophiles that can't make it in any degree program of worth fall back on Education so they can have cheap and easy access to their intended victims.

YOU provoked his rage krellin. YOU should have been more careful with your words and thought out all possible outcomes to the thread. But you didn't, so I'm gonna BAN FREE SPEECH.

Somebody contacts you in a gunboat game ... what do you do?
Let's say you are playing in a gunboat game, and somebody sends you a message by email, Skype, or some other out-of-game communication method. The message refers to the gunboat game, and says something like "support me to Timbuktu", or "DMZ Timbuktu?".

The only thorough and complete way to rectify the damage done, is to cauterise the part of my brain which remembers the content of the message. Ouch!

Ex-Israeli PM and Strongman Ariel Sharon, 85, Has Died
http://news.yahoo.com/former-israeli-prime-minister-sharon-dies-85-125933133.html Love him or hate him, after David Ben Gurion himself, Sharon's probably done more to define Israel as a PM than anyone else...I know I'd still rather him than that nut Netanyahu...Sharon could be ruthless, but he knew the peace process was necessary, whereas Netanyahu's West Bank dealings are short-sighted and endanger the long-term welfare of Israelis and Palestinians.

So Teddy Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway, and Jeremy Bentham Go Rhino Hunting...
http://news.yahoo.com/black-rhino-hunting-permit-auctioned-350-000-033224692.html While it's admittedly morbid to auction off the right to hunt a living creature...if the rhino really is "male, old, and nonbreeding" and the $350K really does go to benefiting the rest of the black rhino population, and this particular rhino's already proving something of a problem because of his aggressiveness...is humane sentiment more important than practical aid in the way of the $350K?
