Assigning Countries
A general question about assigning countries:
So, if me and a group of friends want to agree to pick the countries ourselves, is there a way to do that? I know mods can reassign countries based on previous threads, but is there a way that, if all the players in the game agree, they can be changed without the use of a mod? The game I'd like to have specific countries for is gameID=133754, if that helps at all. Thanks

Something New: School of War Study Group
We had so much player interest in the Winter SoW game that it was suggested we do a Study Group game for those not in the main game. Details inside.
Triumvir (1193 D)
13 Jan 14 UTC
The SoW Study Group would be similar to a normal SoW game in that there would be prof commentary (probably on a forum thread) every season. The difference would be that each nation would be on their own to work with press and issue orders. There would be no TAs. This is a great opportunity for those who have maybe been SoW students in the past and want to step up the challenge level a little, or perhaps for those thinking about being a TA in a future SoW game, or just for someone who wants some immediate feedback on their game. Post if you're interested in playing. I plan to be a professor, but would love to recruit one more person to fill that roll as well.

Sounds quite interesting. I'd be up for being a player.

I recommend rokakoma as a professor if he's willing.
rojimy1123 (597 D)
13 Jan 14 UTC
I would be up for this, provided the time phase is at least 2 days. Feel like I could use some critique and fine-tuning.
Scoggle (234 D)
13 Jan 14 UTC
After the fall SoW I feel like i need some more instruction. Any timeframe on when this would be starting? Im going to be mobile here by the end of the week, so if something like this could start after that, id be game. if not I can wait a season :)
Triumvir (1193 D)

Interested players thus far (with GR):
A_Tin_Can (500)
Ogion (nr)
rojimy1123 (443)
Scoggle (1458)
Virtuslex (505)

@dyager_nh - I know you also said you'd be interested but since your GR is better than mine I'm not sure the game would be much help for you.
rojimy1123 (597 D)
13 Jan 14 UTC
Please PM me when you're ready to get the game going. Thanks.
Triumvir (1193 D)

Will do. Anyone else interested?

@triumvir - It can still be beneficial to get different perspectives. I'm better than I used to be but I never assume I know everything.
EddardStark97 (143 D)

I would like to play, if there are no requirements
Triumvir (1193 D)
14 Jan 14 UTC
@shield - Is that to say that you're interested or just that I shouldn't dismiss dyager's interest?

@Eddard - the only requirement would be that you stick around and play the whole game. I despise CDs.

Interested players thus far (with GR):
A_Tin_Can (500)
Ogion (nr)
rojimy1123 (443)
Scoggle (1458)
Virtuslex (505)
EddardStark97 (4220)

The latter. My current two games are keeping me busy enough.
dyager_nh (619 D)
14 Jan 14 UTC
@ Triumvir - I misunderstood the purpose of the game. I thought it was a mid-level game in which TA level players would play with Professor commentary. Kind of a reverse SOW in which new players would be able to study and see a game of higher skill level analyzed.

Didnt realize it was more of a Junior SOW.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
14 Jan 14 UTC
I'd welcome you to the game if you wanted to play, dyager. I don't speak for the others, but I don't mind there not being an upper limit on the participants' skill level, if you don't mind playing with a bunch of newer players.
Triumvir (1193 D)
14 Jan 14 UTC
@Dyager - I wasn't sure what sort of interest we'd have, or at what level those interested players would be. From the looks of it we're falling closer to the 500 level (with a few above and below). If you'd be interested in offering comments every phase, I'd love for you to be involved as the 2nd prof.

Others who are interested?

I've just finished my last game on WebDip. If you can't find another player, or get a CD, then I'll fill in to keep the game rolling. I believe my GR is 605.
Triumvir (1193 D)
14 Jan 14 UTC
I'd love for you to play if you're interested, RAZ. Your GR puts you in just about the right area.

That would make the interested players:
A_Tin_Can (500)
Ogion (nr)
rojimy1123 (443)
Scoggle (1458)
Virtuslex (505)
EddardStark97 (4220)
RAZ000 (605)

@Dyager - would you be interested in providing commentary?
dyager_nh (619 D)
14 Jan 14 UTC
I will be happy to contribute if you would like. I cannot promise the same quality of contribution that we got from Hampster, 2WL and Jmo but I suspect I have some tidbit of useful knowledge somewhere.
Triumvir (1193 D)
14 Jan 14 UTC
Anyone else interested in playing?
Scoggle (234 D)
14 Jan 14 UTC
Looking at my gr now compared to the start of fall sow, its sad now. I just don't want to pull Turkey again. That would just depress me
Triumvir (1193 D)
14 Jan 14 UTC
@Scoggle - At your level, don't be too concerned if your GR takes a huge dive after a loss. It has the potential to go up just as much (or more) with a big win/draw. Once you get into the top 200 or so it will start to settle down.

I've PMed everyone who has already expressed interest asking which nations you think you need work with. Hopefully I'll be able to assign everyone to a nation they want to play.
Triumvir (1193 D)
15 Jan 14 UTC
Looks like we have seven interested players so we may as well get things started. I got a PM back from everyone outlining the nations they'd be interested in playing. Glad to say I was able to give everyone one of their desired nations. The breakdown should be as follows:

rojimy1123 - Russia
A_Tin_Can - Turkey
virtuslex - Germany
RAZ000 - Italy
Scoggle - Austria
EddardStark97 - England
Ogion - France

As noted in my message to all players, the game will be 15 D, 48 hours, non-anon, WTA. I'll get things created and will send out invites (dropping out once one player has joined).

Is there a mod reading this that could give me TD powers over this game once it's created and I'm out of it? I could send the game ID. (If I don't get a response here I can e-mail - just thought this might be easier.)
Triumvir (1193 D)
15 Jan 14 UTC
Here's the game: gameID=133722

Password has been sent to the appropriate parties. Best of luck. Once things are underway I'll start a new thread for commentary.

All hands on deck, awaiting re-assignment.
Triumvir (1193 D)
15 Jan 14 UTC
I've e-mailed the mods about giving me TD power for the game. I'd imagine they'll get to it sometime today. Once nations are reassigned I'll reset the phase timer and we'll get started. If you want to pause in the meantime you can, but it's not necessary.
Triumvir (1193 D)
15 Jan 14 UTC
All changes have been made and the game time has been reset. Best of luck. I'll start a new thread for commentary when the Spring turn has ended.
Ogion (3882 D)
15 Jan 14 UTC
So, the plan is to just play and get critiques? I think I can do that.
Triumvir (1193 D)
15 Jan 14 UTC
Something like that, yeah. Good luck.
dyager_nh (619 D)
15 Jan 14 UTC
It would be a good idea if someone in the game could post a link to this thread in the General Tab. That would be useful for the players to find the commentary
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
15 Jan 14 UTC
I'm planning to do that once Triumvir creates it (I think he's planning to make a new thread so that future readers don't have to deal with the setup fluff?)
Triumvir (1193 D)
16 Jan 14 UTC
That is correct. I will do so this evening.

Consequentialism versus Deontology
In the game of Diplomacy, the emphasis is - in my opinion - on one's mastery of Realpolitik. To borrow from Wikipedia, it is "politics or diplomacy based primarily on power and on practical and material factors and considerations, rather than explicit ideological notions or moral or ethical premises." In other words, making the best of the situation.

2014 GR Challenge
It's a new year and I'm sure some of you are looking for games. Similarly to what was done regularly in the past and what abg(or someone) organized in December, let's have some GR challenge games. Post here with your WTA FP rank, and anon and turn length preference if you're interested.

Somebody contacts you in a gunboat game ... what do you do?
Let's say you are playing in a gunboat game, and somebody sends you a message by email, Skype, or some other out-of-game communication method. The message refers to the gunboat game, and says something like "support me to Timbuktu", or "DMZ Timbuktu?".

The only thorough and complete way to rectify the damage done, is to cauterise the part of my brain which remembers the content of the message. Ouch!

Ex-Israeli PM and Strongman Ariel Sharon, 85, Has Died
http://news.yahoo.com/former-israeli-prime-minister-sharon-dies-85-125933133.html Love him or hate him, after David Ben Gurion himself, Sharon's probably done more to define Israel as a PM than anyone else...I know I'd still rather him than that nut Netanyahu...Sharon could be ruthless, but he knew the peace process was necessary, whereas Netanyahu's West Bank dealings are short-sighted and endanger the long-term welfare of Israelis and Palestinians.

So Teddy Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway, and Jeremy Bentham Go Rhino Hunting...
http://news.yahoo.com/black-rhino-hunting-permit-auctioned-350-000-033224692.html While it's admittedly morbid to auction off the right to hunt a living creature...if the rhino really is "male, old, and nonbreeding" and the $350K really does go to benefiting the rest of the black rhino population, and this particular rhino's already proving something of a problem because of his aggressiveness...is humane sentiment more important than practical aid in the way of the $350K?
