Assigning Countries
A general question about assigning countries:
So, if me and a group of friends want to agree to pick the countries ourselves, is there a way to do that? I know mods can reassign countries based on previous threads, but is there a way that, if all the players in the game agree, they can be changed without the use of a mod? The game I'd like to have specific countries for is gameID=133754, if that helps at all. Thanks

Consequentialism versus Deontology
In the game of Diplomacy, the emphasis is - in my opinion - on one's mastery of Realpolitik. To borrow from Wikipedia, it is "politics or diplomacy based primarily on power and on practical and material factors and considerations, rather than explicit ideological notions or moral or ethical premises." In other words, making the best of the situation.

Somebody contacts you in a gunboat game ... what do you do?
Let's say you are playing in a gunboat game, and somebody sends you a message by email, Skype, or some other out-of-game communication method. The message refers to the gunboat game, and says something like "support me to Timbuktu", or "DMZ Timbuktu?".

The only thorough and complete way to rectify the damage done, is to cauterise the part of my brain which remembers the content of the message. Ouch!

No one is unbeatable in this game, specially gunboat.
Split is a one of the best gunboaters but but he plays on his own rules, at least on live games, so if you don´t want CD´s, people giving up and people taking advantage of this, just don´t play live games (like I do) or play just password protected games with people you know won´t do such things (another thing I do).
You will probably have a happier webdip existence....

Live games are great when they go well, which is unfortunately too rare these days. When we get RR on this site, I expect things will improve greatly for the live games scene.
Lopt (102 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
What is RR?

I think live is how this game should be played, live press that is. I don't get why people don't devote more time to this game in the form of live games.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
11 Jan 14 UTC
Live games are a big time commitment, usually running close to three hours for a gunboat. Full press live games are an even bigger commitment because you have five minute phases to talk to everyone on the board, which always ends up hurried. On top of that, anything longer than 5 minutes (10, 15 minute phases ,etc.) end up running over four hours, so its unlikely you'll get that many players involved on a given day unless you set it up in advance.

RR = reliability rating, which takes into account the number of game phases you have missed to predict how reliable a player you will be. A high reliability rating (95%+) usually means you only have one or two CDs and very few missed phases. Its also something that you need to "earn" by playing several games first. For live games, it means that brand new players and players apt to quit could no longer join games where the RR requirement is set very high.

"I doubt S could win without CD's"

well now you've gone full retard
Lopt (102 D)

I find press easier, because at least you can keep yourself involved throughout the game. And it's quite easy to manage communication in 5 min phases with building downtimes etc. Usually doesn't take that much longer then GB either.

RR sounds like a nice idea, but I doubt it'll have much of a high-impact. Basically RR will be a replacement for bet-sizes, you might have some people with low points and reliable record, but those are quite rare. So if you set RR to high you just end up with very few people, same like if you set bet sizes above a 100 D...

I don't really think it'll be all that useful, but who knows. Main thing that's gotta change is get people to realize how much more fun Live Press is and stop playing GB always..

Maybe some sort of live-league or something, or perhaps pay-out double the points for live games to give more people an incentive to play them.

Well ED, obviously he was enjoying everyone saying how good he was, so I felt he needed some counter-weight.

But more seriously, I still believe once people are sufficiently skilled in a game no solo should be possible. So unless someone CD's no solo is possible not even for this great mister SD.
I think we're all spreading misinformation. In my experience split is one of the most honourable opponents. I would be very surprised if the description of his vote buttons is accurate.

Jamie - my comment was directed at the game. Obviously if there was an advantage he had the other players should have recognized that and adjusted. It's likely one if the surviving players who should be getting this flack.

As for best gb player, split barn and roka are in a league if their own.

I didn't watch the game and there's no way to go back and check, but there's always the possibility that Split did, in fact, have his draw/cancel vote up after the 1901 CDs, since he usually does, in my experience. However, after a certain number of turns with no consensus, he usually takes it down, as do I, as do quite a few top gunboaters. If his intention to draw is known, but the rest of the board doesn't draw or cancel, then there's no obligation for him to end the game once it goes past a certain point.
Lopt (102 D)
12 Jan 14 UTC
I can't remember his vote being up, if it was it must have been for not more then one turn. But I'd doubt it.

@ 2ndWL: "I didn't watch the game and there's no way to go back and check, but there's always the possibility that Split did, in fact, have his draw/cancel vote up after the 1901 CDs"

He did not. I rejoined in 1902 (although I caught Fall 1902 late and did not actually get an order in until 1903) and he had no draw/cancel votes entered.
Jamie, it is pretty clear you are using this opportunity to deliberately and unjustly slander Split. Not a person has vouched for your claim and knowing you, I can only assume you are blatantly lying to serve some sort of personal agenda. It's very disrespectful.

Honestly, I have made comments about Split in the past, but after seeing so many games ruined by CD's I don't blame him or anyone for refusing to draw/cancel in any situation.

What I'm pushing for is Reliability Ratings like vDiplomacy has, which punish people for NMR's and CD's and reward them for taking over CD positions. It has helped them out tremendously, and I believe it will do the same here. So shoot an email to [email protected] if you agree, and I will send it onto Kestas.
VirtualBob (222 D)

Split's English is deceptive ... very effective for routine cooperative discussions, but he both gives offense without realizing it and takes offense when none was intended. I expect he would not fare will in an English full-press game, but give him a little slack on his forum postings. How many of you would fare well in a confrontational conversation in Croatian?

As for taking advantage of CD's in live games, this is VERY common on this site and not limited to good players like Split. It is not my style, and I wish people would cancel rather than play on, but many have defended the practice.

Fuck you, Lando - you really are one of the most self-righteous assholes I've ever encountered.

I was not "blatantly lying" at all. Unlike you, I had the misfortune of taking part in the fucked-up excuse for a game which prompted Lopt to create this thread. My comments on Split's behaviour are based on what actually happened in the game - there was a period of several turns in which every player other than SplitDiplomat was either in CD or had voted "draw, cancel". Split's refusal to draw or cancel was clearly based on the fact that he was the player who stood the best chance of profiting from the CDs.

You have no basis on which to accuse me of "blatantly lying", but I suppose this just goes to show, once again, your willingness to seize on any opportunity to continue your vendetta against me as publicly as possible, eh?

Dick.
@Jamie didn't you say you woke up when the game was in spring '03?
Is it easier to admit you had blatantly lied publicly about what has happened in the game while you were sleeping or is it easier to continue with the blatant lies that you started with?
Maybe you could ask other players from the game what has happened actualy (except the one who faked the CD, being online the whole time, when he saw he drew Italy) ?
@PE "I took him down despite him having a significant advantage due to CDs (and surprise surprise he was the only one not drawing/cancelling, and voted both as soon as the tide had turned)." - can you provide the link of the unexistent game, please?
Do I realy need to defend myself of such liars like Lopt,Jamie,Chaqa & PE?
Do you think accusations from such pricks actualy count?
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
12 Jan 14 UTC
Split's performance isn't the issue here - its CDs. We wouldn't be having this discussion if we could count on the rest of the board to show up.
Jamiet99uk (898 D)
12 Jan 14 UTC
@ SplitDip: No I didn't. I said I rejoined in Fall 1902. At that time, and for several turns afterwards, everyone except you had voted "draw" and "cancel". You were the only person forcing the game to continue. That is a fact, and not a lie.
SplitDiplomat (101466 D)
12 Jan 14 UTC

Why don't you humiliate publicly the one who intentionaly NMr-s then instead of the one who wont cancel such a game?
Ok Jamie,I allways repeat to the retarded ones - why are you lying as you were sleeping untill spring '03? Can you ask other players except Italy what happened while you were sleeping?
Jamiet99uk (898 D)
12 Jan 14 UTC
I am not lying.

I rejoined the game in Fall 1902 after having to re-set my router. Due to losing my connection I was offline for around 15 minutes or just over. When I got back onto Webdip, the game was in Fall 1902, Austria was in CD, I had made no moves, and everyone except you had a "draw" and a "cancel" vote up.

Which of my statements in this post is a lie, exactly?
Ok Jamie, another repeat (not a problem at all seing your state) -
Ok,you rejoined in fall '02.How many turns there are from the start of the game till fall '02? Did you bother to check with the other players from the game to realize what was happening before you rejoined before you started blatantly lying?
You can ask Lopt as well,it seems he knows everything what has happened in all of the turns which he hasn't participated in it? What do you think how come is that?
Jamiet99uk (898 D)
12 Jan 14 UTC
There are three turns between the start of the game and Fall 02. Since it would seem odd to vote for a "cancel" or "draw" in Spring 1901, it would seem safe to conclude that if you ever voted "cancel" or "draw", you must have done so very briefly since you didn't have those votes up by Fall 02.

Since we're repeating ourselves, I'll repeat my question to you: What have I said that is a blatant lie? Which statement, that I have made in this thread, was a lie?
Everything.
Why didn't you ask me what happened before you started with your lies?
Do you want me to tell you everything what happened in '01 and '02,who voted what and who didn't vote at all and why they did that?
Jamiet99uk (898 D)
12 Jan 14 UTC
Clearly not "everything" I have said is a lie. That's not a helpful answer. If you're going to behave like that there's no point continuing to engage with you.
Jamie don't act as a retarded one.
"the fact that SplitDiplomat was the only player not to vote draw/cancel is dickish. Dickish, as in, the behaviour of a fucking dick." - who said this?
Jamiet99uk (898 D)
12 Jan 14 UTC
I did, and I stand by it. There was a period of several turns in which it was clear that the game was seriously affected by the CDs and all that would be needed to end the game was your vote. You did not vote.

All of this is fact.
