From the book "Personality Politics? The Role of Leader Evaluations in Democratic Elections" (2014) :
"The chapter by Amanda Bittner makes a very strong case for the fact that leader traits derive from perceptions about partisan stereotypes...It provides very strong evidence that electors find that Conservative leaders are rated more positively on the competence dimension and Left leaders are rated more positively on the character dimension. What is more important, these differences remain significant, even when controlling for the party identification of the elector...Do voters infer character traits from political traits or vice versa? The answer is in line with Bittner’s findings. Namely, Huber finds that voters infer character traits from their political positions, but not vice versa...Thus, these results suggest that judgements on character traits have a political basis"
So why should we expect simple problems like 'emails' or 'sexual harassment' to have any real impact on voting? Sure, in polls, everybody seems to hate both candidates. But a lot of voters feel they have no choice, they need to vote to advance their party. The character of a candidate can matter a lot in many cases, but the sad fact is that for all of the chaos from this election, people don't evaluate our presidents rationally. We don't approach every election with a clear mind, free from biases. We rely, almost intentionally, on our partisan approaches for nearly everything. And for that reason alone, I can confidently say Trump never had a fucking chance this election. Obama's approval rating skyrocketed this past year; for all the rhetoric and bullshit of this election cycle, Americans are satisfied with the status quo.
