Help! I'm new!
Hi everyone, I just joined this site a couple days ago. I understand relatively how to play Diplomacy, but I've only played in real life before. Typically, I've never been able to round up many friends to play the game because it takes so long, but I've played some games. Can anyone direct me to any resources so I can learn to play better? Sorry if there was a post like this, but I couldn't find it.

MLB Playoffs
Well fellas, we're down to the last day. The Mariners' drought continues, the Cards continue to somehow stay in it, the Jays thank the Lord finally get a win to push them to the #1 spot. The Nats also clinched home field advantage over the Dodgers.

Any WS predictions? Is it really the Cubs' year? Can the Dodgers finally make it? Who's going to surprise? My money is on the Jays duelling it out with the Giants, but of course I have a strong bias. What do you all think?

The winner of the inaugural webDiplomacy Live Game Tournament is Valis2501, who wins 500 points. Gerry finished in second place, winning 200 points, and Yoyoyozo finished in third place by winning the tiebreaker, winning 100 points. I also quietly gave Zybodia 100 points after losing the third-place tiebreaker because I felt bad and I can (inb4modabuse). Those below the line did not complete the three games required to be eligible for the winnings but I scored them anyway. Everyone has had their point total adjusted to +/- 0 points for the tournament (except for rewards), so any winnings were removed and any lost bets were refunded.

I thought the tournament had its ups and downs but ultimately was pretty successful. We got 9 games off the ground, and though a couple were marred by CDs, that is a pretty good number as far as live games go. A lot of players participated in anywhere from 3 to 5 games, which is awesome, and everyone that signed up for the tournament played at one point except for Octavious, but this whole thing was his brain child in the first place, so he deserves some thanks for helping to put it together.

I have seen a lot more live games take off in the last couple of weeks here than I had in a long time, and a lot of those games have been filled with some players from this tournament. That is a great sign and I hope that continues going forward.

This thread is open for feedback, responses, reactions, EOGs, or whatever you would like for both participants and non-participants in the tournament.

in all honesty, the tournament was great. I think gunboat is a better option for this kind of thing. or public press. mostly because its too hard to talk to everyone in such a short time span. but, hey there was still a solo so someone did something right. damn valis, get a job you hippie, just kidding congrats.

But yea, lets do this again with gunboat or maybe rulebook press, 7 min? I dunno. lots of options. We should have a live game tourney league or something where we have rankings that keep getting updated. keep this idea alive! its to good and live games are coming back on here bigtime
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))

Thanks everyone! It was super great double plus fun time.

I'm not particularly a fan of the idea of moving it to gunboat because
1) You can normally fire those anyways
2) Why not just run a 7 gunboat series? Takes about the same amount of time. and you'd get much more consistent turn out.
2.5) You wouldn't be able to do, say, 6 press games over 2 months if they were non-live, like we did with the live version. See point 2 about how you could totes do that with gunboat.

I'd support Rulebook Press and/or 7 minutes per phase however. I think they're both really good ideas, although I'm more inclined to implement the former than the latter.
Zybodia (355 D)

I don't like the idea of rulebook press in live games, because sometimes retreats and builds are the only chance I have to get caught up on press.

Zybodia's point ain't wrong.
Yoyoyozo (65 D)

I didn't really mind the pacing. It was a bit rushed, but I think that added to the experience of the games. You have to prioritize your press a lot, especially later in the game when you to use a good portion of your time putting in orders

Retreat and build phases are also excellent opportunities to make a cuppa or spend a penny :).

Great tournament, bo. Sadly I've been ridiculously busy for the latter half, and was somewhat unlucky in the first few weekends, so my experience was limited to steering Turkey into a deep hole for a year or two in one of the cancelled games :p.

What this has done is demonstrated that live tournaments are doable, despite all previous evidence to the contrary. The set up at the beginning didn't work particularly well, but the modifications improved matters a lot.

Whilst the idea of opening up the tournament games to non tournament players wasn't particularly popular, I still reckon it would be a good way of allowing more tournament games to be played. The tournament benefited hugely from having
a bo who was willing to be the seventh player when games were not quite going to fill up, and a future tournament with a larger group of bo alternatives has the potential to run with more games and fewer cancellations.

webDiplomacy continues to lose players
The number of players listed each month in the Ghostratings continues to decline. Every year, there is a peak around May/June. We peaked in 2011 with 3,571 players, and steadily lost players from then to now (if you don't count the 2013-2014 inflated numbers anomaly). This last May peak we hit 2,503. At this rate, I figure there will be seven of us left in 2029.

Frostweaver's Personal Comments on Live Gunboat-483
Just a note: I'm not playing in the game, just spectating and inputting my personal comments on the game's moves.

Classic opening moves were made by all countries - except for Turkey. Seems Turkey is susceptible to Russian retaliation from the Black Sea. Also quite interesting how Britain and France strayed away from the English Channel.

Facebook Diplomacy
I've discovered a bot that allows you to play chess on a Facebook Chat page using algebraic notation. Could someone conceivably create a Diplomacy adjudicator for a Facebook chat page? It might make Diplomacy more accessible as you can easily play with your friends without worrying for phase length, pauses etc. Would this be in any way possible? It's just a thought.
