ESPN Streak for the Ca$h
Anyone here play this with at least semi-seriousness, and is there interest in making a webDip group on ESPN for friendly competition? I haven't been picking too much but with CFB and NFL seasons starting up in a couple weeks, I plan on trying again. I've gotten up to W21 before during football season.

Conway's Game of Life
I suspect many of you are familiar with Conway's game of life, and there may have been a thread on this topic in the past, but I have been messing around with different patterns and I find this 'game' simply amazing. Such simple physics, but such complex and cool things can happen. If you aren't familiar with the game check out the rules here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway's_Game_of_Life
For those who do know about this, what is the coolest pattern you have seen??

Tony Stewart Accidentally Runs Over/Kills Driver During Race
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtBH9FJ3LOU I have never watched a NASCAR or Sprint Cup race in my life...because frankly, I couldn't care less about cars going around and around in a circle 500 times (I don't doubt it's hugely challenging and takes talent, it's just not for me) but wow...what a way to go. :/ Getting run over like that mid-race, shit...

Is it possible for there to be a war where all sides are actually *right*?
We're all familiar with the idea that there are wars in which everyone is at fault. Let's consider the hypothetical opposite: Is it possible for there to be a war where all sides are actually *right*?
(This is somewhat related to the "religious people so anti-humanity" topic but I think this deserves it's own thread.)

Guys the bit I don't get is where there are no politicians in the USA willing to question the fact that the US taxpayer is funding a very right-wing group in Israel to do this killing, don't you have a national audit office in the US that looks at govt spending to see if you got good value, I'd be interested to know what they say about the money going to fund the on-going oppression of the Palestinian people while you have millions of people in the USA relying on food banks for their meals, is this the dream the pioneers flocked to America for .... people at home getting food handouts while the US govt fund/support oppression/persecution/torture/murder around the globe.
We can shake our heads and wring our hands all we want but monsters like Netanyahu are home grown and home financed and avidly supported by the poodles like Cameron in the UK.
Do you ever wish your own politicians wanted more and were better people.
In Iraq guess what, ISIS were born out of the USA backing a violent regime who have sought to marginalise the Sunni population, the efforts to interfere in Ukraine by both the USA and EU have resulted in a rebellion and civil war.
Is there anyone at the Pentagon/White House/USA in general who asks the question, "ever noticed that when the USA get involved in other peoples fights it seems to get worse and not better."
There is a big case for the USA to significantly change their foreign policy from an aggressive one where they take sides to a neutral one where they seek to stop or prevent the fighting and bloodshed, but the truth is if they did that they would not be able to sell either side ever more weapons so global capitalism can only be sustained via more on-going conflict.
If all the world stopped fighting for 3 years what damage would it do to the global arms industry, huge losses, massive job cuts and unemployment.
Surely it is not sustainable to maintain global economic growth via the arms industry, at some point in time, unless we have a World War to get the population numbers down (a human cull) there will come a time when we don't need ever more arms and weapons pumped into the system, then what? World War 3.
Of course the 3rd World War will probably involve nuclear weapons and all of the countries with nuclear weapons will be prime targets for other countries with nuclear weapons, for a cull to be successful China & India have to be nuked just for the sheer numbers. When you continue to back and support violence to resolve cultural and regional tensions around the world do not be surprised if one day you take it a little too far, if one of these rebel groups get their hands on long range nuclear missiles where do you think they are going to be pointing them, wherever it is it won't be a happy ending.
Bringing it back to todays troubles I see that Israel are playing their part in this Christian Jihad very successfully, but my money is on the 1st nuclear striike by any rebel group to be Tel Aviv for obvious reasons ..... what happens to the Jewish people in the 2nd World War was terrible but I don't see they are going to fare much better in a 3rd global conflict, Israel is like the goat tied to the rope when the t-rex is on the loose, eventually you will be left with just the rope and a lot of blood.
I am only saying this because I want the same for the downtown residents of Tel Aviv that I want for people inside the big refugee camp we call Gaza but the policies being pursued by the Western powers in Israel will surely end in tears and probably for the locals as they will be so much nearer to hit with a missile.
Let us not pretend that the USA want peace for Israel, it serves no short, medium or long term objective in the Christian war against Islam. If the US govt learnt one thing about 9/11 it is keep your battles on foreign soil, and get a decent weapons defense system tested and installed before WW3, how long before that dome system appears around major US cities, I just hope we get a few set up in and around London to get us half a chance.
So the message from Israel to Hamas is please carry on shelling until we have finished the testing, once tests are complete and lessons learned we will look to temporarily ease the destruction of Gaza, then once we have made the technological advances to the Dome system we will need a new round of testing..... cynical or just realistic

Yeah, it's amazing, Nigee--

When you invade somewhere to destroy tunnels that violate your national sovereignty (which apparently you have no problem with, good to know!) and threaten your people, you kinda sorta want to make sure that job's done...

Israel's already paid the price in lives and public opinion, why shouldn't they want to finish destroying the tunnels that have instigated this war?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
26 Jul 14 UTC
Oh, that's right--

You like to reduce a man-sided conflict to one-sided nonsense...

When you move beyond that type of one-dimensional thinking, let me know.

(And if Hamas was so concerned about the loss of life, Nigee...why didn't they accept the ceasefire A WEEK AGO...you know, the one offered BEFORE Israel came in on the ground? Oh, right--they cared more about their demands being met than the lives of Gazans. Good to know!)

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2014/07/26/israel-gaza-palestinian-cease-fire/13202349/

"Hamas rejected Israel's 4-hour extension of a humanitarian cease-fire Saturday as the Palestinian death toll in the conflict rose to more than 1,000.

Sami Abu Zuhri sent a text message to reporters Saturday, saying: "No agreement to extending the calm for an additional four hours." A short time afterward, the Israeli military said three rockets were fired from Gaza.

The cease-fire rejection came after the Israeli Cabinet agreed to extend the 12-hour truce until midnight Saturday, and Yuval Steinitz, an Israeli Cabinet minister, said a further extension would be considered."

Yeah...truly, it's Israel that doesn't care about humanitarian things like a ceasefire, and Hamas that puts its citizens ahead of violence or political goals...

You can tell because Hamas rejected a 4-hour extension to that ceasefire, you see--mhm.
mendax (321 D)
26 Jul 14 UTC
Until this invasion, Hamas hadn't fired rockets for years, and yet you quibble over four hours?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
26 Jul 14 UTC
1. They fired rockets in 2012? O.o

And hundreds to thousands of rockets are fired at Israel every year, so...

2. YES, I DO--Israel agreed to 4 more hours...and it doesn't benefit them, the longer they weight, the longer Hamas has to regroup and rearm, so if Israel agreed to a humanitarian extension of 4 more hours, why not Hamas?

Seems rather hypocritical to say you're the party fighting to protect people when they break a ceasefire for the SECOND time this conflict and thereby restart that conflict and put more lives at risk...if Israel was willing to go 4 more hours, tell me why Hamas couldn't wait.

And Hamas is saying it won't agree to a long-term ceasefire until its demands are met--that's not peaceful, that's holding a group of people hostage, daring Israel to shoot back as you shoot at them, and saying you won't stop that heinous and disingenuous action until you get REWARDED for it.

I hear nothing but excuses for Hamas here...so, please, let's hear one more--

Someone dare to excuse Hamas rejecting a 4 hour humanitarian ceasefire for its OWN PEOPLE? (Unless they care more about their own political demands than those people?)

"We arm em all"--Yep!

We just sent billions of arms to Qatar too, Nigee...and guess who supplies Hamas, and where Hamas' leadership is? ;)

So, yeah...sorry...but the US is being a hypocrite in arming Israel AND Hamas, not just one side. Nice try, though.

Also:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrieBhaGgHM

Walt Disney hated the Jews? WELL...apparently, in addition to "stealing" the land in 1948, we also killed Mickey Mouse's Anti-Semitic cousin, according to Hamas!

Though that "Jew" in their video is the only Jew in history to ever pull off shades and a drug dealer-like look...and really, politics aside--after almost five minutes of that damn mouse's voice, wouldn't YOU have killed him, too?

Yep, that's clearly the side worth backing in this fight...the one using human shields, with its leadership in another country, turning down ceasefires, storing weapons in UN schools (for a THIRD time...gee, it's almost like they don't have a problem putting civilians in danger!) AND encouraging Antisemitism throughout the Arab world.

Those are our plucky rebels, alright!

"Now John Kerry has a real purpose in the Middle East as US Foreign Secretary, to busy himself with the condemnation of the capture of an Israeli soldier. "

Israel kidnapped over a thousand hostages from the West Bank as a prelude to their attack on Gaza. No one cared. But one of the Israeli soldiers invading Gaza gets captured, and the world is outraged. The term "double standard" does not begin to cover this.

"I saw on Facebook someone describe Washington as some kind of Zionist Disneyland.
Are there any dissenting voices in the USA against the continued occupation of Palestine by the Israelis?"

There are dissenting voices, but not in Washington, where even the slightest hint of lack of slavish devotion to Israel will get you targeted by AIPAC.

Funny, NigeeBaby...

For all your claims of wanting peace for the Palestinians, I didn't hear you crying foul when Hamas violated the 72-hour ceasefire that the Palestinians *wanted* just 90 minutes in to start the war again and cancel the peace meeting in Cairo.

What?

Israel does something to further the war, you're up in arms...

Hamas breaks a ceasefire the people it alleges to protect pleaded for, and as a result both that humanitarian ceasefire AND peace talks are off the table now, all because Hamas broke ANOTHER ceasefire...a ceasefire its people WANTED...

And not a peep of outrage from you?

Double standards indeed.

If a foreign army invaded my country and treated me and my fellow countrymen like shit I would fight them by any means I had available to me until I got my freedom back .... I could be called a freedom fighter.
In Palestine if I did the same I would be called a terrorist because I had the courage to try and defend my own country and the lives of my family and friends against foreign occupation.
Thank God we supported the terrorists against the Nazis back in '39.
75 years later let us once again support the terrorists trying to defend their own country against a fascist regime hell bent on genocide and the widespread persecution of the Jewish population, because the actions of the Knesset is only acting to engender hate towards Jewish people and it is unfair and it must be stopped.

This thread's back? You guys need to use your energy on something else.
This war simply needs to end. It needs to end now no matter the cost.

Honestly, the thing for Israel to have done if Hamas did violate the cease fire would have been to appeal to the powers that brokered it. If they truely did break it, stand back and show the world that they did and get the soldier back

Instead the same old macho israeli masculine political culture continues to bomb civilians into smithereens. Sick of this bull shit.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
02 Aug 14 UTC
"If they truely did break it, stand back and show the world that they did and get the soldier back"

It took FIVE YEARS the last time Hamas took a prisoner, Santa. I don't think anyone in Israel want to wait that long again...

And if the United Nations can't even get Hamas to respect a ceasefire or to stop hiding weapons in their shelters, why should Israel think that any amount of external international pressure would make Hamas give up this soldier for anything less than an absurd price.

The diplomatic process has broken down.
Hamas refuses to deal...
And even when they do deal, they break those deals, making it impossible to deal again.

And you didn't answer my question, Nigee--

Why don't you have a problem with Hamas breaking the ceasefire that the PALESTINIANS wanted?

If you care so much about the Palestinians, why aren't you appalled that the ceasefire they wanted so badly was broken by Hamas?

That ceasefire was specifically so the Palestinian people could heal...

And Hamas started the war again in 90 minutes--not caring if the people had healed.

So answer me, directly--if you really and truly care about the Palestinians, why aren't you, like me, deeply saddened that the fighting not only didn't cease today, as it was supposed to, but got worse...because Hamas ignored the wishes of both the people in Gaza AND the wishes of Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian authority and fired anyway?!

That's your definition of "freedom fighter," do the OPPOSITE of what your people want you to do???

"Thank God we supported the terrorists against the Nazis back in '39."

They weren't terrorists and stop Godwinning yourself.

obiwanobiwan (248 D)
02 Aug 14 UTC
Yeah...not a fan of the term "Jewry" post-1945, Nigee...couldn't use "Jewish Community" or "American Jews," nope, had to use the older one with a past of not always being used so nicely...thanks!

And I'm sure that's not a biased article at all, with a title like that...what's next?

"10 Reasons to Rocket Israel and Kill Every Israeli Citizen?"

And ha...leading voice?

Yeah...Henry Siegman...no...not so much...

Why don't you cite Norman Finklestein vs. Alan Dershowitz if you want a famous (and balanced) case of American Jews debating Israel? Finklestein's strongly anti-Israel, and Dershowitz is strongly pro, so hey, you actually get BOTH perspectives argued by, on the one hand, a prominent intellectual and, on the other hand, one of America's more famous and successful lawyers?

But no, continue posting loaded articles, and ignoring the question of why Hamas defied the will of its OWN PEOPLE to break this ceasefire.

Easier, right?
Jewry is a perfectly fine term...
the fact you think it isn't shows how ignorant you are.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
02 Aug 14 UTC
Ditto. Jewry is just a word, don't get oversensitive.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
02 Aug 14 UTC
It's been used in a poor way before, Santa.

I agree with both of you it's not a slur, I'm just saying...it's an older term that hasn't always been used well.
When? When Jews tried to rescue Russian Jews from Russia and the rally cry was "Save Soviet Jewry" and the movement was called the "Soviet Jewry movement"

The Hebrew University in Jerusalem who currently has a project called "Center for Research on Dutch Jewry"

Jews in Australia who currently organize under the banner of "Executive Council of Australian Jewry"

The Jewish museum in Israel which is named "MEMORIAL MUSEUM OF HUNGARIAN SPEAKING JEWRY"

Shall I continue?

Perhaps you would like to retract your statement or let it die, either way is fine with me, just know that it's completely wrong and it has NO negative connotation.
