A Call for Blind Diplomacy Voting (only see your own votes)
Diplomacy should be carried out through your moves, and if press is allowed, through your press, but not through voting signals. Some conspiracy theorists believe their are hidden meanings in unusual votes -- in my experience it is b/c of us cell phone players with fat fingers... Gunboat should not have this communication tool, and in press you can reveal or lie about your votes all you like...

Hi all,

Thanks for your patience with the downtime (The longest downtime webDiplomacy.net has had).

Due to some recent performance & stability issues I decided to max out our memory and disk space on our dedicated machine. This was relatively inexpensive, and I made up half the new cost by replacing a service which would message me when the server went down. Hopefully it'll pay off.

The bad news was the upgrade needed a complete re-install of the system. I thought this would take ~4 hours, but the guys who did the upgrade took three hours just to do the hardware swap and reinstallation. This threw the schedule way out, and I was trying to reinstall webDiplomacy before getting sleep.

In my rush to get to sleep for work the next day I didn't test it properly. It turns out that MySQL on 64-bit enables strict-mode by default, which webDiplomacy apparently has a few subtle issues with. This caused game processing to fail.

Note that no information was lost, and no games were corrupted; the processing failed, the system recognized it and rolled back. I've added time to all games, tested it out using the DATC automated tests, and me and the mods will monitor the server closely this evening for any issues.

Also apologies there have been few updates recently. Most of last year was spent on translation support, and I realize that to the people on this server that's totally useless, but there are lots of great suggestions to work on, and I should have more time in the future to work on them due to a job change.

Thanks again for the patience, and to the mod team for the quick response. I have to say it was killing me at work knowing the server was down.. This upgrade should be a very positive step going forward.

Thanks again,
Kestas

Thanks. I really enjoy this site, and you have my sympathy getting servers able to keep up with the demands.
That said, did the games open to join get extra time? It looks the time passed in those, and it will be more difficult to fill some of 'em.

Hey guys, FYI it looks like whatever the issue is with performance it's not going to go away with a bit more power thrown at it.. It's never that easy unfortunately.

I'm collecting data on the server's performance so hopefully there'll be something more to work with by this weekend.

Thank you for making this site possible... though I strongly suggest something sexier than a checkerboard for Mods... I would rather a superhero logo, or better yet, I like the Iron Fist suggestion... Kestas, we need to get you a special, honorary logo... Let there be a thread to that...

Appreciate that CSteinhardt, for now I've been disabling a few non-core features to see if things stabilize.. So far so good..

Thanks for all you do, kestas, I love the site. I have a son playing here too, it's pretty cool for a dad to have a son learning to play and love Diplomacy. The withdrawal symptoms I suffered for a few hours weren't too bad compared to the benefits of this site.

I guess it's supposed to be a police checkerboard josunice ;p didn't think about it too much

Server load is way down now though, we'll see how we go..

I'm still pretty new here, but when the site went down I broke down in tears and sat rocking fully-clothed in the shower with the cold water on until it came back up. Thanks for keeping this place running.

So Kestas... Half of the homepage can get hung up during a page refresh at times, so I looked at it in Firebug and the SourceForge logo at the bottom of the screen can take as much as a 1/2 second to retrieve. I'm wondering if you should just have that tiny graphic on your own server because it doesn't seem worth holding up the page loading time over it. Or, put in the logo's dimensions so the page renderer can keep moving.

I'll admit that it was a bit nerve wracking at first being unable to check on my games. However, the pause was rather refreshing for me, personally. I got a lot of school work done because of the free time.

kestas, you have my thanks for that and, of course, the update.

@Kestas - a Police Checkerboard! I did not see that reference coming... NYPD don't swing that way, so not a universal reference, unfortunately... How about an animated rotating siren light... that would be both annoying and universal <GRIN>....
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Apr 13 UTC
You know, Nigee doesn't have a clue. Kestas is an adult who works for a living. That's right, he is over the drinking age. In Australia you can buy it at 18 and some places drink it at 16.

And remember, Nigee, Kestas can always take away your coin.

A bobby hat! I tmay not be universal, but we would all recognize it. That or a picture of Mad Max's Interceptor.

@ Draugnar--if we're taking in Mad Max references, I think he'd have to go with Humungus (or that creepy gimp-dude that rides with him). Is that too much for a thumbnail icon?

An actual philosophy variant
Choose a philosophical school of thought. If the philosopher fundamentally changed during his writing career, you must also choose which text(s) you will be following. Then, you must hold to that philosophy in all discussions and movements. Why not PP, 5 D, 50hr phases, WTA, orders must be announced. If someone can demonstrate how a proposed action goes against your philosophy, you may not take that action and must do something else. Critiques?

Server upgrade
Thanks for everyone's patience during the server upgrade, for some reason it took them three hours, so it took much longer than I expected. I've added time to all games, if anyone spots anything out of place let me know.
On the bright side once this has settled down the server should have more capacity..

How does one leave a game?
I have no intentions of leaving any games I'm in, but I invited a friend to join the site and he joined a bunch of games, then decided he just didn't understand the game. Rather than stick around and ruin things for everyone, I've convinced him to just leave but I don't see that option anywhere. Help?

Why does anyone play live gunboat games?
Don't get me wrong, they're fun enjoyable things to do, even though I'm not too good in them myself, but, NMRs and CDs are rampant, and you get opportunistic wankers that refuse to draw/cancel even though everyone else has their draw/cancel votes up and game ettiqute demands that they do so, so I ask, why does anyone play them?

Repeat Messages?
Did the new updates come with a feature for preventing posting the same messages you already did? I posted the link to the email the mods about unpausing games, but I ended up having to add something to the beginning of the post, to get around a message that told me to make repeat messages.
Doesn't matter that much, but it seems like it could be annoying at times

Can someone explain the draw of the Gunboat?
To me, the entire thrill of this game is in the formation of alliances and the negotiations between players. With that being said, I absolutely don't understand the draw of the Gunboat games--it takes out the best part. If I'm looking for pure strategy, I'll take games like Axis and Allies (despite the "luck factor" or even chess). What am I missing about Gunboat games?
