Rules of life?
Does anyone has some sort of rules they live by, like the Ten Commandments? Semper Fidelis? Carpe Diem? Anything you live by?

An important one for me would be: Sometimes you're wrong.
I'm thinking of making a list for myself so I know what I want if it ever gets to a rash decision of big importance or something...

Rand Paul fillibustering Brennon
Rand Paul, angry at the Administration using Drone strikes to kill American citizens, has began a bi-partisan filibuster against Nominee Brennon. He is supported by Democrat Ron Wyden, as well as Rubio, Cornyn, Lee, and a few others.

Three cheers for Paul and the others. Too bad there aren't 41 senators with enough guts to stand with them.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)

They could pull off a traditional filibuster and talk their heads off if they have the political balls to do it.

Bravo for standing against his own party, and pulling off a *true* filibuster instead of the lame, "Oh, we call filibuster" and cancelling a vote.

Sadly, when he loses his voice, that piece of shit Reid will just call the vote anyway, because there are no principles left in Washington (well, Rand being the exception)

Tomorrow's headline, "Rand Paul killed in Drone Strike..." <sigh...>
Invictus (240 D)

I wonder if another Senator could pick up for Paul when he can't go on anymore. Senator Cruz sure seemed enchanted by Rand's performance today.
semck83 (229 D(B))
07 Mar 13 UTC
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing.

"1. (a) When a Senator desires to speak, he shall rise and address the Presiding Officer, and shall not proceed until he is recognized, and the Presiding Officer shall recognize the Senator who shall first address him. No Senator shall interrupt another Senator in debate without his consent, and to obtain such consent he shall first address the Presiding Officer, and no Senator shall speak more than twice upon any one question in debate on the same legislative day without leave of the Senate, which shall be determined without debate."

It sounds to me like he could, in fact, pass off to another.
hecks (164 D)

I don't generally like Rand Paul, nor the practice of blocking nominations. This opposition, however, is actually about something. So yeah... I don't hate this.
semck83 (229 D(B))
07 Mar 13 UTC
Ah, but they can invoke cloture, rule 22. Never mind.
Sbyvl36 (439 D)
07 Mar 13 UTC
@Invictus: They are. Seven senators are rotating.

krellin (80 DX)

@semck, yes, as long as he has the floor, he can speak, or hand the floor off to another, and they can not be interrupted. They could do this forever...and in fact, they should just keep it up until the next election and shut the whole f*ing town down!

Now THAT would be awesome: A 2 year (-5 months wasted so far) Federal Guvmnt shutdown!
Sbyvl36 (439 D)
07 Mar 13 UTC
YES! Send that response to Rand Paul's email.

We are dreaming it now.

Besides, its not a bad idea. After all, why should a Radical Muslim be in charge of our efforts to contain Radical Muslims?
krellin (80 DX)
07 Mar 13 UTC
There are no radical Muslim's in Washington....sorry, Charlie...there are some happy tuna though. (No...not Pelosi! That's some bad old smelly tuna there...)
semck83 (229 D(B))
07 Mar 13 UTC
Correct, krellin, except that if he ever leaves, then they lose the floor, even if he handed the floor to them. So if he leaves, then cloture can be invoked.
Sbyvl36 (439 D)
07 Mar 13 UTC
John Brennon is a Radical, and he is a Muslim. Hence, a Radical Muslim.
Invictus (240 D)

I wonder if there's an explicit Senate rule against... well, never mind.
Sbyvl36 (439 D)
07 Mar 13 UTC
No, he will yield to John Cornyn or Marco Rubio, so one of them can ask a REALLY long question, and that question, as I presume, will continue without end until the Senator in question who is the Senator that is filibustering, and is also the same senator who left the Senate chamber to use the Restroom outside that chamber, returns to answer the question which he missed while he left the room to use the restroom outside of the Senate Chamber. Then Senator Rubio/Cornyn will have to repeat the question which they asked during that time, so that...
semck83 (229 D(B))
07 Mar 13 UTC
You can't leave the chamber and keep the floor, Sbyvl (and thus, whoever is asking you a question would also lose the floor, since they have it by your leave, and you no longer have it to give).
Sbyvl36 (439 D)
07 Mar 13 UTC
Can he yield the floor to another Senator, and then get it back, without losing it to Harry Reid?
semck83 (229 D(B))
07 Mar 13 UTC
Yes, he can, "for a question," and the question (as you suggest) can be almost arbitrarily long, but he has to stay there.
krellin (80 DX)
07 Mar 13 UTC
John Brennon is a Radical, and he is a Muslim. Hence, a Radical Muslim.

Bahh.. yes, I know he is openly Muslim. I was not aware that we were at war with a religion...

did obama really set a trial for osamas son in law in the states
how did this happen? this is the only reasonable thing i think his administration has done in recent memory. will this be a public hearing? everything i am sure will be classified - they cant let people know the truth about any of this al qaeda stuff. but just bringing him into the country is something. did this guy have absolutely no knowledge of the organization? how could obama do this?

Point Tax
It seems to me there is a great disparity in the number of pints people have, with some having earned thousands, and other often stuck below 100. It is time to implement a Point Tax, perhaps monthly, to supplement to lower-tiered players who can not/will not earn and save points. Who's in???

absurd amounts of sugar in a venti
so new york will make it illegal to put more than 3 teaspoons of sugar in a venti. so you sugar addicted assholes have to start carrying around packets of sugar. but i guess this probably doesnt apply to self-serve sugar - so maybe starbucks is still ok.

Advice to a new online player
Hey--

Although I'm no stranger to board games, or negotiating games (there's a Game of Thrones boardgame that--at least when I play it--includes a Diplomacy-style negotiating phase) I am new to Diplomacy. Needless to say, I'm new to this site as well. As a 30-something high-school history teacher familiar with strategy/negotiation, what is the best advice a long-time player can offer me?

Can't leave game
Hi,

This and 11 other accounts I control were created to fill slots in a large game with some friends. We wanted to play the 17 player map with less than 17 people (we are aware of balance issues with this), and our schedules are varied which disallows us from having shorter turns.
