Rules of life?
Does anyone has some sort of rules they live by, like the Ten Commandments? Semper Fidelis? Carpe Diem? Anything you live by?

An important one for me would be: Sometimes you're wrong.
I'm thinking of making a list for myself so I know what I want if it ever gets to a rash decision of big importance or something...

Rand Paul fillibustering Brennon
Rand Paul, angry at the Administration using Drone strikes to kill American citizens, has began a bi-partisan filibuster against Nominee Brennon. He is supported by Democrat Ron Wyden, as well as Rubio, Cornyn, Lee, and a few others.

did obama really set a trial for osamas son in law in the states
how did this happen? this is the only reasonable thing i think his administration has done in recent memory. will this be a public hearing? everything i am sure will be classified - they cant let people know the truth about any of this al qaeda stuff. but just bringing him into the country is something. did this guy have absolutely no knowledge of the organization? how could obama do this?

Point Tax
It seems to me there is a great disparity in the number of pints people have, with some having earned thousands, and other often stuck below 100. It is time to implement a Point Tax, perhaps monthly, to supplement to lower-tiered players who can not/will not earn and save points. Who's in???

absurd amounts of sugar in a venti
so new york will make it illegal to put more than 3 teaspoons of sugar in a venti. so you sugar addicted assholes have to start carrying around packets of sugar. but i guess this probably doesnt apply to self-serve sugar - so maybe starbucks is still ok.

Advice to a new online player
Hey--

Although I'm no stranger to board games, or negotiating games (there's a Game of Thrones boardgame that--at least when I play it--includes a Diplomacy-style negotiating phase) I am new to Diplomacy. Needless to say, I'm new to this site as well. As a 30-something high-school history teacher familiar with strategy/negotiation, what is the best advice a long-time player can offer me?

COMMON SAYING??
Is ignoring behaviour the same as condoning behaviour?
If not always true, is it true when those doing the ignoring are in a position to influence and affect the behaviour?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Let's say I'm a cop. I witness a murder and a theft at the same time. I am only one man, so I run after the murderer, essentially ignoring the thief. I am not condoning the thief, merely recognizing I can only solve one problem at a time and prioritizing accordingly.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))

Just to play devil's advocate to abge, say you're training a dog. The dog decides to chew on your furniture. If you ignore the behavior, you are telling the dog it's OK to chew, effectively condoning the behavior.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Yes, but I think Lando will agree that my scenario is a bit more similar to the question he is actually asking.
But assuming, abge, you recognize the thief and you know where to find him. What then?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 Mar 13 UTC
Then I would eventually get around to him, when I was done solving murders.
Sometimes:-
Ignoring the behaviour of a 20 strong group of drunk young men in Reading city centre on a Saturday night is a survival strategy, whereas commenting on their behaviour is a sure-fire way to get your head kicked in. On a Saturday night, even the police go around mob-handed in Reading.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

But if you could call for assistance with the thief and you knew where he was, couldn't you take care of both?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 Mar 13 UTC
Let's assume there are, say, 4 cops and one retired cop. Let's also assume there are about 4 murders a day. That keeps everyone rather busy. Oh, and let's also assume these cops don't get paid.

So the 4 cops and one retired cop go into this bar, see, and inside they find the Pope and a dead-on Marilyn Monroe cross-dresser...

All these examples are a bit out of place though. It's a cops responsibility to arrest the thief. It's a pet owners responsibility to train his dog properly. So in those situations, where there is power and the expectation of action, ignoring IS condoning.

A better example would be ignoring a racist comment or something like that, and I say no - ignoring is not condoning. I do not have the responsibility to make sure nobody around me uses racial slurs. Mutejus doesn't have the responsibility or authority to make sure I love Jeebus, and so he's not condoning my hilarity when he mutes me.
krellin (80 DX)

YJ - those examples were not out of place. They were just different examples, on a different spectrum of human interactions, but no less valid.

So the bottom line is, the answer to your question is: "It depends on the situation".

Sometimes you are too far removed to make a difference, or unable to effectively interact (sitting front row of an Obama speech and not calling him out when he lies - too far removed politically to matter, unable to effectively make a difference), other times you would be clearly condoning - such as watching your child steal or punch someone and not correcting them.

The other question - and maybe better question: Does you condoning the behavior matter? Not condoning a politicians behavior is like spitting into the wind... Not condoning your child's behavior will (in theory) help you to raise a better child.

Can't leave game
Hi,

This and 11 other accounts I control were created to fill slots in a large game with some friends. We wanted to play the 17 player map with less than 17 people (we are aware of balance issues with this), and our schedules are varied which disallows us from having shorter turns.
