How does one report a dubious competitor?
I'm in a game where one player is making moves that help another player, after that player attacked him from the first move. It may not be outright cheating, but it is certainly against the spirit of the rules. I would like an administrator to look into it.

Read the rules in the first post before commenting on this thread. Breaking the rules of this thread will result first in a warning, and then in docked points or a temporary silence just the same as commenting on any gunboat game would.

1. The Professors for this game are SplitDiplomat and the Czech. They are expected to post a lecture approximately twice every game year as well as to answer questions posed in the thread. Anyone interested in commenting as a guest professor should contact me.

2. NOBODY but the professors is to post any commentary. However, anybody may ask any relevant questions. Answers to questions are considered commentary. The professors have full discretion over what will be allowed, and they are not required to answer questions they feel may overly impact the game play.

3. None of the students or TA's who are playing in the game or advising somebody in the game are to post in this thread while the game is active unless requesting a pause. However, once the game is over, End of Game statements from the TAs and students are encouraged.

4. Commentators should make all questions retrospective. Simply wait one phase and ask "Shouldn't England have moved to X". The point of the commentary is to teach gunboats without overly affecting the game.

5. This game is an exception to gunboat press rules. Posting about gunboat games in any form is otherwise not allowed. Posting in this thread is allowed because this is a teaching tournament pre-approved by the moderators.
Allright, the game has started and the first moves have been made.We have one missorder and as this game is supposed to be educational I suggest to the mods to correct the board if that's possible.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

That's something I can't do. Misorders are part of any game so we'll just go with whatever moves are entered.
Mapu (362 D)

Where is the misorder? Or is that a disallowed question.

That's one thing ALL players should do on a regular basis. ALWAYS check the orders or click on the big map. Those orders are your tells. They signal to other players what you are trying to do.

How do you establish an alliance in a Gunboat? You have an idea of what you want to do and who you want to work with. But, without any verbal communication, it seems like it could take 2 or more turns to establish intentions.
The Czech (40297 D(S))
05 Nov 12 UTC
Sometimes it does take several turns to get someone to respond. Your opening moves say a lot about friendship. Mun-Bur, Par-Bur with support from Mar. What would that say about France and Germany's intentions. Sometimes peace. Fall and Builds will give a better picture. Mun-Ruh, Par-Pic says something different. Lon-Chan, Bre-Chan. I think you get the drift. Moves = intentions. Check the moves! Den looks like it held, but it really supported Russia to Swe. Without knowing that, Russia might decide to attack a potential ally. England might be oblivious and not realise that Russia and Germany are working together.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

lets keep this on the front page.
Czech - if things remain unclear after a year or more, and it seems that nobody in your triangle has found a good alliance, is it better to be an aggressor and try and lure another player to join your attack or is it better to stay conservative and wait for someone else to be the aggressor?
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

Lando can post as a guest professor. If other TA's want to post comments as guest professors let me know, as long as you don't say anything to try and influence the game towards your student I don't mind getting some discussion going.

Everyone reading this thread aside from students are welcome to ask any questions you have about gunboats, they don't have to be specific about this game.
The Czech (40297 D(S))
06 Nov 12 UTC
@ Lando That's a style choice. Some players by nature are more conservative than others. So mix it up and see what results you get from being aggressive or waiting. The country you are playing may have a lot to do with it as well. Your personality (the collective your and not Lando) will determine how you play in that situation. Take notes, bookmark games so you can go back and see how you did and how your adversaries did. (In gunboats you tend to see the same players especially if you join the 101 or higher pot games).
I think it has a lot to do with the board as well. Sometime sif you can grab one centre you have momentum that even two neighbours won't be able to stop. Most people play more conservative than not and will use their resources to hold what they have, where needed, more than go for new gains, unless assured. I think players should pick their spots, be aggressive if the gains are mostly known, use what you expect reactions to be based on that - how threatening your move on one country makes you to another third party, use this to gauge reactions.
Let's talk about the game;
The spring moves were perfect – classic,non-aggresive moves communicating «standard alliances» in a diplomacy game(Tur/Rus,Aus/Ita,Eng/Fra) and if it weren't for that French missorder that would be excatly the same openings I prefer with each of the 7 powers.
First year mission in a gunboat game is to secure your neutrals and not to show any aggresion towards your potential future allies.
Only order that I would change in those spring moves is Ven H! In gunboats You need every single unit to do something,HOLD order is «not allowed»,with every unit that holds you can communicate to your allies. So in this case Ven s Trieste hold is much better,by that you tell Austria you are willing to ally with him so he can use that Vienna army to bounce Russia over Galicia again in the autumn and not to cover Trieste for nothing. This is only an example but later in the game there are many occasions in which you can and you need to communicate like this.
ENGLAND – The fleets in the North Sea and Norwegian Sea to secure one and only natural England's neutral (in case Russia opens with Mos – StP) and to show France immediatly his desire for the friendship by not moving into the Eng.Channel.The army to Edinburg so he can convoy it with Norwegian fleet and have North Sea fleet to cover London potentialy or to take Belgium in case France and Germany bounce themselves over Burgundy.London can be covered by that army Edi also nad use Norwegian fleet to take Norway in other scenario…
FRANCE – The fleet to Mid Atlantic is the same thing as F(Lon) to NTH – securing a neutral and being nice to England.Paris to Burgundy ssupported by Marseille – a lot of Germans see the move as aggresive but it isn't at all,France need it to take Spain safe and not to lose Marseillle in first year in case Germany bounce him over Burgundy and Italy opens to Piedmont.
GERMANY – I prefer the fleet in Denmark because in the autumn it could be a great problem to take Denmark if the fleet goes to Holland to secure Belgium with the army in Ruhr.England would be tempted to move there in that case and then it's hard even in the second year to secure Denmark. And Denmark is much more important to Germany then Belgium.Berlin – Kiel for Holland and Munich – Ruhr means being friendly to France and take Belgium if it's free or cover Munich if there is a potential trouble in Tyrolia.
ITALY – Venice H (or defend Trieste) is the best possible order. It's not good for Italy to be aggresive in spring '01 and try for Trieste,Tyrolia or Piedmont, you just don't have the power to threaten Austria or France and you can't get them mad only because of the move and you can't do anything with it in the autumn.Roma - Apulia to convoy it to Tunis or to defend Venice. And the fleet Naples to Ionian to convoy Apulia or to move there by itself (depending on French and Turks orders and depending on who is going to be your first pick to attack)
AUSTRIA – has no choice. He needs Italy and Italy needs him so Austria is the only power who has to gamble with his homeland centers and hope Italy will co-operate.Because Austria knows he needs to cover Galicia, any Russia will go there and Budapest and Vienna are in danger. He needs to move Budapest to Serbia because he can't secure it in the autumn. And the fleet must go to Albania to not to let Turkey gets Greece. If Turkey brings two armies outside Austria is in a big trouble. In any case Turkey and Russia expand in a way that threatens Austria so he needs to «gamble with Italian loyalty».
TURKEY – Constantinople to Bulgaria – Only move on the whole bord that has no alternatives.Ankara to Black Sea is not unfriendly to Russia, they both need Black Sea to be empty so the bounce is (probably) the best possible choice. And Smyrna to Constantinople to be ready to take Bulgaria in case Greece would be open to take and to show Russia his friendly intentions.
RUSSIA – also has not much alternatives to these moves. He needs to move to Galicia because of the same reason as Austria. He needs to move Moscow to Ukraine to secure his only secured neutral SC in Rumania. And St.Pet to Finland – the same thing as to Gulf of Bothnia but communicating to Germany he has no intention to mess with him.
In short - the moves were great and I believe our teachers had a great role in it.A real example for the ones who wants to learn about the game.

Depends on what your intentions were. If you are still going F Bre-MAO and Par-Bur the downside would be a unit Ven-Pie. If you were bounced in Bur by Germany then you have to guess on what Italy might do. Par-Bur with support allows for Bur to cover Mar so you can keep Spa 100% of the time.

There are time you will want Mar-Spa in Spring 01 however. Preference and who you are playing against will give you a "gut" feeling on what to do.

To Cathlics - Resigning as Voice of God?
OK...I thought it was, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me..." and the Pope, who --- isn't he like the Voice of God on earth?? -- is too tired to go on? Errr...it isn't about his strength...it's supposed to be about Christ's strength, isn't it? How disappointing is this to Catholics?

Wrestling Dropped from Olympic Games.

I don't understand how canoeing, handball, badminton, taekwondo, and table tennis can survive as "core sports", but wrestling, that most traditional of Olympic sports, gets placed on par with wakeboarding, roller sports, and squash.
