Yeah, it's not like the police, unprovoked, used tear gas against a peaceful crowd on a sidewalk or in a public park for no reason, as the headline by itself might lead you to believe...
CBS (note I'm not even touching a so-called 'conservative' source) says that one man in the crowd threw an unknown liquid at a cop's face and a young woman swung a stick at an officer and when the crowd moved in to help her as officers tried to arrest her that that's when the pepper spray was used.
In addition, the crowd was 'peacefully' demonstrating in the middle of an intersection blocking downtown rush hour traffic and refused repeated warnings to move. Dunno if you've been to downtown Seattle, but there isn't much place for traffic to detour if a downtown intersection is blocked. This is no minor inconvenience this is a major threat to order. How many old women and pregnant women couldn't get to the hospital in time because the streets were blocked by protesters? This wasn't reported on, and probably isn't even known, but did any of the protesters stop to think that this was a possibility?
Denying use of public roads is definitely not a right (I checked the bill of rights, it's not in there), and when you get down to it, its against the law, so you break a law, prepare to face the consequences.
After looking at all the details, this definitely sounds like police brutallity to me.. A police force establishing law and order so the city can function and having to protect themselves from assault in the process.
Good job twisting the story here..

Disclaimer, lest responders resort to the "You greedy heartless bastard" personal attack:
I'm not saying its a good thing that the priest, 84 year old woman, and the pregnant woman got sprayed, but if you refuse to move out of rush hour traffic when police request that you do so and you are part of a crowd that is getting a bit rowdy and assaulting the cops, you place yourself at risk and I no longer feel that sorry for you...
