Rule question!
Here is the situation (actual positions and countries are different, but the situation is the same). If Germany's army in Ruhr supports its fleet from Holland to Belgium and England's fleet in North Sea supports its army from Belgium to Holland, what happens? It bounces, right?

Someone not unpausing a game
Ok so i am in a game currently that has been paused for about 3 weeks now. We as a group decided to pause it for one of the players playing was needed elsewhere in life. however, now we are wanting to unpause it and get the game moving, however our persia is not unpausing it. i believe it may be because he is losing....i am not sure how to proceed with this because it is my belief he will not unpause the game. What should we do about this game?

Say you have an army in Gascony and a fleet in MAO. Can the army support MAO - Spain (south coast)? or does it have to be the north coast? Thanks.

Considering building a desktop computer, looking for advice.
And is anyone familiar with the new AMD bulldozer 8 core processor? I hope to use it.

There are these nifty things called tech websites. What's amazing about them is they have forums too, unlike this website though everyone on those forums is interested in random people asking how to build desktops. This site however has a majority of the people reading it thinking "wtf does this have to do with this site". Again, I advise you to stop posting for a while and let people forget about you.

Thanks for the great repetitive advice, but i was just curious if anyone had anything. And to rebuke your comment, how does a current thread, Jesus=Socialist have anything to do with the site. And to answer your posting comment, i think moderation is better than abstinence, so i will post less but not stop. And troll very rarely.

Once you know, you newegg.

What level of competency do you have with computers? (By asking about the 8 core processor, I'm assuming none).

Also, what do you want to use it for?
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
28 Oct 11 UTC
Hmmm, I can't see that thread so it is probably one of TC's threads. Some people aren't worth arguing with.
But you have not moderated yourself, you have at least 2 topics on the 1st page that you created, and you are trolling in the top 50 GR game thread, and yes, asking to join a game for people with a GR under 50 when yours is over 700 is trolling.

On a scale of 1 to 10 i probably have 8. I asked about the 8 core because it has only been out a few weeks and i don't know that much about it. And while i am good with tech support and troubleshooting and the such i have never physically built a computer before. And i would use it for gaming and the such. It has 24.8 gigahertz of power i believe, from what the sites about it said. i will likely have about 1500-1800 dollars so want the best system i can get for that price.

Definitely go for the eight-core bulldozer, AMD processors are great, and much better than Intel's for the price. Also, I would suggest not wasting money on the abomination that is Windows and install Ubuntu or Linux Mint, it saves you a few hundred dollars that you could use on making the computer even better.

Now that I've helped you and hopefully answered a question you'll have sometime in the future, please stop posting.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

OK

I'm going to give you a 3 out of 10 based on that last statement.

There is 1, maybe 2 games that can support an 8 core proc. Unless you are doing serious parallel coding, you are going to be wasting 2-4 cores.

Also, for a lot of games, the GPU is significantly more important than the CPU.

I would recommend the following CPU (although you can save money if you get the 4 core one):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103913

Get a Mobo that fits that socket (I recommend Asus or Gigabyte)

6-8GB of RAM should be good (Corsair/Kingston)

I haven't been keeping up on GPUs, so you'll have to do your own research for that.

I'd recommend either WesternDigital or Seagate for a HDD.

Use this tool to find out how big of a power supply you need:

http://educations.newegg.com/tool/psucalc/index.html

Rosewill and CoolerMaster are both good.

I really like LianLi cases, but they're a bit pricey.

Always buy a separate fan for your CPU; the ones that come in the box are usually junk.

I'm knocking you down to 2 out of 10 for that windows rant.

But, seriously, don't get that 8 core proc. It's a waste of $$$$.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))

Yes, but the 8 core will last years in the future, i imagine a 24.8 ghz pc will still be rather good 5 years down the road.

@Diplo --- If you are building a gaming computer, why the hell would you want an 8-core processor that has only been out for a few weeks? A game released TODAY has been in development for YEARS....and therefore does NOT harness the power of those 8 cores, and is therefore a HUMONGOUS waste of money.

I am an avid gamer...and I have NEVER, EVER built a computer to latest technology, because the games are never built to latest and greatest.

I look at the games I want to play, and then buy the current tech that meets my needs. This will save you 50% off the top...and then, when necessary....because you know how to...you upgrade the individual components as needed.

But...to the question of the 8-core processor....Uhhhh....you don't know much about gaming rigs, do you? You want the best bang for the buck??? The order in which you prioritize your cash is:

1: Graphics card
2: Memory upgrade
3: CPU / Motherboard -- good cache and data rates.

Great gaming is generally built on great graphics and the memory to handle the situation, NOT the CPU. The CPU is just the coach, telling the data where to go.

Good luck. Starting a new job next Wednesday and will be upgrading my own rig soon, too, for SWTOR....can't wait to do the research.

Let us know what you finally decide upon.

I will get windows 7. And 16+ gigs of ram. and a 2+ gig graphics card. i have been saving a while for this, ready to go get a really great system. and buy it now and it will last for years without needing upgrades. and a windows rant guarantees a 9 out of ten, and as you can see, gates is alive and jobs is dead. may the better man win.

Buying technology to last a long time is a losing proposition.

Why buy over-priced, bleeding edge Hardware that nothing supports *now*, when you can get it on the cheap in 2-5 years when you need it?

While Linux is better for most things (sorry, D33, but Linux allocates resources and uses HW better), the reality is that it is *not* cut out for gaming. Wine or a virtual machine just doesn't cut it when you want to do serious gaming, meaning your stuck with windows.

Windows 7 is leaps and bounds better than older copies. It can handle the new HW and drivers. It would be foolish to buy a new machine and then put XP/Vista on it.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
28 Oct 11 UTC
@D33

If you want 16GB of RAM, then make sure you get at least Windows 7 Home Premium (must be x64). Anything else won't support that much RAM.

In reality, though, for gaming, anything over 8 is a waste. It just isn't going to be used.
ghug (5068 D(B))

First, Diplomat, does your blacklist mean that you won't talk to me and refuse to play any games that I express interest in joining? If that is the case, I might take you up on your offer.

Second, Diplomat, please stop calling it 24.8 ghz, things aren't that simple, refer to the specs as they are. Your recent posts make me think that your tech level is closer to a 1 than a 2.

Abgermacht, I think he does have a point about it being useful in the future, he has plenty of money to spend on the processor, and the fact that he's buying Windows means he's willing to waste it, but you are right in that there would be little performance difference on anything he'd be running anytime soon, I have a 2.0ghz phenom x4 in my laptop and it runs things fine. As for your other recommendations, I agree with you on most points, but I wouldn't recommend Seagate for an HDD (they've given me problems), and with that budget I would probably buy a small supplementary SSD for the OS and frequently run programs, especially if running Windows.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
28 Oct 11 UTC
@ghug

hmm...I've had a number of Seagates and had no problems.

I just don't see the point in buying HW that you can't use for at least a couple years.

Windows versus Ubuntu?
I have never tried anything other than windows. What is the advantage of Ubuntu?
Can you still install MS Office? Are most popular game compatible? Are there draw backs (yes I know I could go to a tech site but I'll talking about things here).
ghug (5068 D(B))
28 Oct 11 UTC
Diplomat, did you just use Windows being better than OSX as an argument defending Windows? First of all, it was incredibly insensitive, second, Apple really isn't setting the bar all that high, and third Linus Torvalds is still alive and much more awesome than Bill Gates will ever be.
TheUnforsaken (100 D)

Keep in mind that many games are now specced for consoles...I bought (an admittedly expensive) gaming rig at the end of 2007 and haven't had to touch it since, and its been able to play Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, Crysis 2 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution at max settings without any trouble and they aren't console ports.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
28 Oct 11 UTC
@Spy

Ubuntu is a distro of Linux.

The biggest advantage is that it's free and almost any software you can think of has an equivalent free version Office (OpenOffice), Photoshop (the Gimp), Matlab (forget the name).

Some people have bs philosophical reasons for liking it, but I use it at work because it's excellent for coding.

Really, it's only downside is that it is horrible for gaming. Absolutely wretched. If I wasn't a gamer, I'd use Ubuntu on all my computers. But I am, so my desktop runs Windows.
krellin (80 DX)
28 Oct 11 UTC
Agree with Abge -- you idea to buy bleeding edge, 16 gig memory, blah blah blah....WHY???? What game ANYWHERE requires 16 gig max? You would ONLY need that much memory for active 3 D graphic design and sumulation....NOT for Battlefield 3....

My impression is that you are trying to impress others with your rig....but it has nothing to do with the hardware.

OK....so let's say you buy 16 gig....in two years, I will be able to buy 8 gigs for cheaper that ruins faster. Let's say you buy a $500 graphics card....in two years, I will buy a card for $250 that has higher definition, more memory and capability.

Buy what you need....it's not like you are going to get laid because you have 16 gig of memory....so don't waste your money....'cause you sure as hell won't find a game in the next decade that requires 16 gig of memory. That's just stupid.
