Mod Policies
So, there has recently been some confusion/criticism about how mods handle cases. Without talking about any specific cases, I'd like to review how we handle different cases and the reasons for it. Hopefully, this can turn into a productive discussion, since this site is community-driven.

First off, many people wonder why cheating accusations aren't allowed on the forum. The reason for this is simple: A game should be self-contained. A player (guilty or not) should never be expected to defend themselves on the forum. That is metagaming to the fullest extend. Furthermore, non-mods do not have access to the information we do, meaning that often times people are falsely accused.

People also wonder why we do not like exposing cheaters to be ridiculed. Kestas has made it clear that he wants punishments to be delivered by the mods, not the community-at-large. Public ridicule is not controllable by the mods.

Finally, when at all possible, we try not to ban accounts. We can keep track of players that have cheated in the past and do a better job monitoring them in the future. If we ban a player, there is nothing stopping them from making a new account (well, there is, but we don't do it often). It is actually better to let a cheater keep their old account so we can monitor them.

This is the same reason we don't put scarlet letters on cheaters. Why would the play with a branded account when they could easily make another? It would make our job enormously more difficult if every cheater remade their accounts.

Now, this doesn't mean we never ban accounts. We actually do it quite often, but we only do it when the situation calls for it and after we are sure of the player's guilt and their refusal to follow the rules in the future.

Hopefully, this has helped cleared up why we handle cases the way we do. As I've said numerous times before, we never discourage criticism/suggestions, but we do ask you don't refer to specific cases, for the reasons presented above.

They can ban IP address. Im sure of it. And they can block you from accessing the server as i found out once when i tried to log on as mr. v. I had to move to another computer to play. It still wont let me on.

But i think the mods do a great job with cases. They do so much work and get paid nothing. But i think i no longer want to be one, from what ive heard its not a fun job.

not that i would be permitted to anyway.

"Hopefully, this can turn into a productive discussion, since this site is community-driven. "

"Kestas has made it clear that he wants punishments to be delivered by the mods, not the community-at-large."

These two statements are in direct contradiction. Don't try to offer the facade that this is a community driven site when everyone knows we have no power (nor necessarily should we).
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
18 Oct 11 UTC
Yeah. A direct democracy is a bad idea. Letting random people, trolls, and the like have power is a worse idea then giving it to respected members of the community. Not that the oligarchic system is the best, its just not as bad as many others. I do think we should get to vote for mods like on wikipedia. If the person is willing and the mods accept him or her, same as on wikipedia. on a related topic, im an administrator there...

I don't see how they are mutually exclusive. Punishment is one aspect of the site, but we actually do listen to suggestions by players.

I suggest we add Oli to mod here, if hes on. He does great with vDip. But he is probably to busy with that.

@D33 - They are reticent to ban IPs because of the dynamic nature of them. Schools like high schools and universities as well as many businesses have just a few external IPs and use routers and switches to direct the packets to their appropriate internal IP addresses which are not viewable to the outside network. For instance, if you are on at school and go to whatismyip.com on one machine then do the same on a different one, you will more than liekly get the same Ip address and it will be different from the address giving if you run ipconfig from the command window.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))

Yes, thats their big weapon in the arsenal. But like a nuke, it should be used sparingly. But they can see and monitor IP, that im sure of.

@abge:

Either the site is run by the community (it's not) or it's run by Kestas. Kestas can take advice from the community, but as long as he has the final say, it's not community driven.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

The issue is due to the vagueness of "this site is community-driven."
Does that mean everything about the site is community-driven? I don't think abge means that. So many things about this site are driven by the community at large, but there are instances where the mods and the creator have control, such as banning someone or deciding punishments.
It's a bit harsh to call that a facade, smiley.
And technically, the two statements are not in direct contradiction unless it includes the phrase "everything about this site is community-driven" in the first statement AND that the mods are not a part of the whole.
The mods volunteer here and they also play games, hence they are also a part of the community, not apart from the community.

Are you being pedantic to make a point, or are you just being difficult? Go to most sites and they won't listen to anything a member has to say, the forum will be completely regulated, and you will be banned for challenging a mod. That is not how this site is run and was the only point I was trying to make.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Gram +1 (and I clicked it too).

Community driven means the community is listened to. sometimes the decision goes against the will of the majority of the vocal minority, but we are still listened to.

Case in point: Muting of individuals and threads. For a long time some of us wnated that ability and always it was "there are bigger more important things to code" then one day it suddenly appeared thanks to Kestas and whoever else might have coded it (Kestas? Someone else?). That our request was eventuially granted means it was community driven.

"Go to most sites and they won't listen to anything a member has to say, the forum will be completely regulated, and you will be banned for challenging a mod"

Really? I'm not sure "most" is accurate there. That's certainly not true for "most" cites I'm on.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
18 Oct 11 UTC
Yeah, challenging the people who work for the community and put in hours of extra time is not correct. Perhaps you would like to work long hours to keep a site running with no financial incentive and little reward but personal satisfaction. If not, then i don't see much you can complain about. I hate people who criticize people trying to do good thinks for them. The mods are not perfect. But remember, thees about 10 of them to 10000 users, so be patient with them. And no, the mods did not pay me to say that :) I actually think it.

@D33 - " I actually think"

Really? Couldn't tell by me... J/K ;-)
nearly ALL forums based on a professional, profit-driven franchise will absolutely ban every and anyone they think will have even the slightest negative effect on the perception of their product or cut their profits.

And, furthermore, they usually ban people and delete posts left and right without warning or notice so that people do not realize how strictly monitored such websites are.

Try joining the OFFICIAL forums for any film franchise, videogame, or other profitable enterprise and then post criticisms of it and see how quickly your posts are deleted and you get banned.

Let's pretend or agree that smiley was not serious in order to move on. Otherwise, it's going to get into a debate of which site is good and whether or not this site is good and how the mods here run everything like nazis, thereby invoking Godwin's law, and ending the thread.
Oooops, by talking about invoking the law, I might have invoked the law, and hence this thread has to end.

@Dip33

I'm quite ambivalent about you adding your grain of salt to this conversation. On the one hand, your case has been dealt with and we're to abide by the ruling which more or less says that you're still a full-fledged member of this community. So yeah... you should give us your two cents if you need to.
But on the other hand, there's still much ... uneasiness about your case. Some people think that they should have banned you, and much in the way you describe yourself. Abge's effort here, in trying to make the mods' point of view and practices a bit clearer is a valiant effort to help reduce this uneasiness and, in effect, ease you back into good standing in this community. But then, when you make yourself vocal the way you have on this thread, it feels to me like his efforts are vain: the more you talk about this, and the more it sounds like you're gloating.

The thing is, Dip33, you tried so hard to get attention as a candidate for mod status that your recent actions are all the more impossible for me to accept. In my humble opinion, I would fly very low, very much under everybody's radar for the time being. Let the dust settle. You seem like a bright young man with good diplomatic skills. Learning when to shut up is yet another diplomatic skill you might want to learn.

So yeah, like I said, I'm ambivalent. Just know that the more you post, the less ambivalent I am.

As of Friday, I was in four games. In the last 24 hours (well, 30 technically, but it's close) I received the following message three times: "You were defeated, and lost your bet; better luck next time!" Bye bye, highest GR spot for me to date. I've never been so soundly defeated so often in so short a time.

The United States Shouldn't Have Entered WW2
The United States intervention in World War Two cost 418,000 American lives. And, really, what did the United States gain from it? Hitler was gone and Nazi Germany was destroyed, but much of Eastern Europe running from East Germany to Russia was under the (de jure or de facto) rule of Stalin and the Soviet Union. U.S. intervention fostered the spread of communism by destroying its primary opponent, fascism, thus setting up the Cold War for the next fifty years.

I am wanting to sit down and play a good game. I was wanting it to be 10-20 min for each turn. Bet only 5. It would be zero but it seems that is not allowed. I require 6 additional players.
