Paused Game
I have a game that was paused, but one player hasn't returned for 3 days (he is not the one that requested the pause) and everybody else is ready to go again. How long does etiquette demand we wait? Can we even GET somebody to unpause it?

I have one game (a gunboat) that I need a sitter for. Can anyone help me out, please?
I assume there is no appropriate way to contact the people in the gunboat to request a pause.

Integrated video chat is nothing new. Google+ is nothing new.

I won't trust personal information to a company that has shown blatant disregard for its customers' privacy over the years, regardless of how mundane it may be. There isn't a single Google product I use, and I don't intend to start anytime soon.
largeham (149 D)

It's just Facebook, but under the Google name. Will Facebook go the Myspace way? Or is it too entrenched.

Smiley, the only problem is that every (or most) companies have little regard for customer privacy.
Kingdroid (219 D)
12 Jul 11 UTC
Facebook as a pretty easy method also, abge. Whenever you add a friend on the same page you can add them to a list. then, when you post you can easily lock certain groups from seeing your posts.

Facebook just didn't advertise it as a gimmick. Google is *marketing* something Facebook already has.

"I won't trust personal information to a company that has shown blatant disregard for its customers' privacy over the years, regardless of how mundane it may be. There isn't a single Google product I use, and I don't intend to start anytime soon. "

But you use *facebook?*

no the hangouts are definitely worth it
krellin (80 DX)
12 Jul 11 UTC
If I'm locked into facebook with all my friends, etc, why in the hell would I want to change to google+???? That's stupid. There has to be some fantastic beneift to switch, and since nobody in normal society has even heard of Google+, I doubt there is gong to be some massive influx to Google+. It's Google, once again, *WAY* overreaching, thinking they have to be everything to everyone, and thereby becoming not much to most people except and overly-biased search engine...
largeham (149 D)

Has anyone here actually used Google+? Isn't it still in beta/trial?
Thucydides (864 D(B))

In fact I already do use both
Kingdroid (219 D)

It's in an invite Beta. I have a Google+, as do quite a few others. it is not open for open signup, but it's fairly easy to get one. Every user has unlimited invites.
krellin (80 DX)
12 Jul 11 UTC
OK....anybody remember "the wave", or whatever Google's revolutionary social thread was supposed to be? A bunch of dorks waited around with baited breath to get an invite to that, too. It's such bullshit Apple-strategy....we'll make this thing unavailable to most, publish a bunch of false hype, and pretend it's the best thing ever!!!! You know...and then Apple *resold* their upgraded product to everyone so they cold get the decade-old function of "cut and paste"...and still the fan-boys screamed in delight! Same thing occurs with all this Goolgle nonsense. (And it's a *really* great idea if you want to sign on to something where the EULA says Google **owns** all your data!! I especially love that!)
Kingdroid (219 D)

They aren't any worse than any other company.

@Red

I sure as fuck hope parents decide to stay on FB.

@Krellin again

Because it doesn't have all the shitty bugs that really frustrate me?
krellin (80 DX)
12 Jul 11 UTC
Bugs? what bugs does Facebook have? I would really like to know what people are doing on Facebook that you seem to encounter bugs...which I have seen reffed in articles on Ars Tech and such...and yet which I have never seen. What bugs?

People won't show up as online even though they are (they aren't hidden).

Chat doesn't always function properly.

Wall posts/comments/likes don't update properly.

Pictures don't always pop-up correctly.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I understand that nothing they've done is new. What is nice is the integration. I can be reading mail, gchating, and reading g+ status all on the same page. I like that alot.
Kingdroid (219 D)
12 Jul 11 UTC
@krellin, the difference is I'm not buying Google+. I fail to see how I'm losing out at all by simply trying it?
Kingdroid (219 D)
12 Jul 11 UTC
Oh, and I've just realized that krellin is a Facebook fanboy. inbefore more irrational support for Facebook.

I like Facebook, i use Facebook, I also started using Google+. it has some things FB has, and FB has some things G+ doesn't have. *shrug* They're both free, what do i care?

Oh, and I think you're thinking of "Google Buzz".
Kingdroid (219 D)
12 Jul 11 UTC
Oh, and I absolutely despise FB's picture pop-out function.

@abge:

Integration is *terrible*. I hate it. Somehow everyone got the idea that everything needs to be integrated and in the cloud. I don't want things to be integrated. Integration means it does nothing well and everything poorly. Gmail is one of the worst products I've ever seen. Why I would want to integrate that with Facebook, I don't know. The only thing Google has ever done well is Chrome, and that pales in comparison to Firefox (Or, Nightly, the 8.0 beta that I run instead).
krellin (80 DX)
12 Jul 11 UTC
*NOT* a Facebook fan *at all*. The problems with FB are numerous, and they create new problems all the time, including massive security issues. That being said....GOOGLE? I'd take FB security issues over Google's "We own you" issues any day.

As far as FB versus Google...I'm not saying it won't "do something" that you like....but given that most adults have already bought into the FB thing, I doubt a bunch of people are going to suddenly jump ship to Google+ for no apparent reason. Perhaps it is a generational thing...and yet, I don't think so. My 12 and 13 year old have all their friends on FB....why would they suddenly migrate to Google? My primary objection is that it is a late-comer, and just won't get enough response to be a valid alternative other than in niche cases where a bunch of friends all agree to migrate together. that some of you have already migrated/tried it out is just an indication that you are tech-geeks...and not an indication of overall societal interest...

I never thought I'd say this, but krellin +1.

That was an intelligent, mature, well thought out post that refrained from profanity and name calling (And was right). You should post like that more often, krellin.

Just a thought--since we have so many apt and opposing personalities on the site that frequently debate topics, anyone interested in a more formalized session? Format ideas and the rest inside--and definitely open to ideas here--but basically it'd be sort of like the forum equivalent of a live game: 5 minutes for posts on the topics given, and then 2 minutes for a rebuttal, one person goes after another...we'll select for an impartial debate moderator...points awarded by moderator, and so on?

Please, if you have the time, consider being a sitter for me!
The games are gameID=60453 and gameID=61014. I'm having sudden time commitments and am neglecting both games dreadfully - messages not responded to, barely entering orders on time, etc. The other players deserve better. Does anyone reliable want to sub for me until I get back on my feet? I'll greatly appreciate it!

Putin Explains It All!
Well, ladies and gents of WebDip, I have opinions--so do you. That being said, my opinions are just that, opinions, and *I* don't have a clear, 100%, fail-safe answer to every single matter of running a nation.
LUCKILY, however, we here at WebDip DO have such an esteemed, enlightened individual, who, as has been evidenced time and time again, is correct no matter what. So, I give him the floor: Putin--please, explain how we might all prosper in a Perfect Putinist Polity!

interpretation of rule 5?
"5. The Pause/Unpause feature is not a diplomatic tool
The pause is there to stop players missing their orders, but is not part of the game. As such pausing or unpausing should not be used for diplomatic gain, such as refusing to unpause unless other players will draw the game. If it is being abused staff may step in to sort it out."

Bug in the "Threads/Replies" part of a players profile
I'm assuming others have noticed this, but if you haven't, it takes awhile for a thread or reply to actually appear there. And if you have too many, the page will crash. Does anyone know what governs this behavior? As best I can tell, the number of posts missing is somewhat proportional to the number of posts you've made.

So, with NASA's final space shuttle launch today, where does that leave the US (and international space program)? Is this even something to be sad about or should we be focusing our cash-money elsewhere, anyways?
