Will you be my friend? (For real this time)
I'd like to start a high-quality game with players I haven't played before. I'd like to get people who are newer to the site involved, but veterans who I don't know are also OK. The game will be WTA and I'd like non-anon, but if people really want anon that's fine, too. I reserve the right not to be your friend : ) If Tallfred is still interested, I've reserved a spot for him.

Traveler IQ - What is yours?
I owe a good deal of my knowledge of prominent European cities to Diplomacy. I was curious as to how well my fellow diplomats would do.
I challenge you to test your knowledge. http://www.travelpod.com/traveler-iq

This time on Technology Weekly
I think it's great that people love talking politics and philosphoy so much, but there is only so much of it I can handle. However, I do know we've got a lot of technologists here as well, so I thought I'd pilot a Tech/Sci spin-off of obi's infamous series. I'll try to find an interesting thing to talk about, which people can comment on, or you can share your own stuff.

The NHL Playoffs Are SET! (Who've You Got?)
All 16 teams are set! The Rangers and Blackhawks just squeak in, the Hurricanes and Stars jsut miss out, and all three California teams, the Kings, the sharks, and my Ducks, are in the playoffs...more Californian teams than Canadian teams! So...who'll defeat who, and when the dust settles, which team will get to drink from Lord Stanley's Cup this year? :D

Will coalition survive AV vote debacle?
What do you make of Huhne going off the deep end on the Tories? I think Cameron's crowd really made a mess of things by attacking the Libs for broken promises when those broken promises helped support the Tories in government. I think an election is likely. What say you?

Capturing pieces
Are there any varients of diplomacy where a unit, surrounded and not able to retreat, are captured rather than destroyed (perhaps to be used as future bargaining chips). I would think that would add alot to the game. Just curious.

http://www2.tbo.com/news/2011/may/02/11/crowds-gather-new-york-washington-after-bin-laden--ar-204123/

I suppose I can understand nationalists feeling gratified that a national enemy has been killed, especially someone as horrible as osama bin laden, but jubilant celebration is something I would expect of totoalitarian super nationalist regimes.
These people cant make it out of their homes to rally againt bank bailouts, endless wars, widening gulf between rich and poor, police militarization, racist immigration laws, US secret prisons, etc. whatever, but they all come out to party because the military some someone in the head and dumped them in the ocean?
I mean..

"It's a great day to be an American."

"jubilant gatherings across the nation to celebrate the death of Osama bin Laden - cheering, waving flags and belting the national anthem."

"10 years of frustration just building and building, wanting this guy dead, and now he is, and you can see how happy people are."

"the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies were in the middle of a game in Philadelphia, and chants of "U-S-A! U-S-A!" "

"The chant - "U-S-A! U-S-A!" - echoed in Dearborn, Mich"

"Pa., the student newspaper reported. One was dressed as Captain America, fireworks were set off and colorful chants rose up from the crowd."

"hey, hey, goodbye" singsong chant "

"Obama 1, Osama 0."

‎"A hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness, a desire to kill, to torture, to smash faces in with a sledgehammer, seemed to flow through the whole group of people like an electric current, turning one even against one's will into a grimacing, screaming lunatic. And yet the rage that one felt was an abstract, undirected emotion which could be switched from one object to another like the flame of a blowlamp."

"No man is an island, entire of itself;
every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less,
as well as if a promontory were,
as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were;
any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
it tolls for thee."

I was at the White House in DC last night. I think most people were there out of curiosity and a desire to take part in a spontaneous demonstration rather than any genuine emotion towards Goldstein himself or what his death represents. It's been a big year for popular demonstrations and I suspect that many college-age students were frustrated that they were not able to take part in anything of the sort, until they had an excuse yesterday. So yes, the celebration was tasteless and ultranationalistic, but it was, for the most part, disassociated with any actual events.

That said, there were some people there who seemed to be sincerely convinced that Bin Laden's death meant "We're #1". The expressions of pointless rage and revenge from these individuals were indeed chilling, but they did not emanate from the majority of the crowd.

Personally, I'm disgusted by all this US nationalism. If we look at it outside of the political phenomenon that it has become (CNN headline: God has blessed America!) it really hasn't achieved much. The big boys are still fighting their imperialist little war over in Libya, while their capitalist economy rots.

America always supports what is helpful to its imperialist interests. In 1950 they turned South Korea into a showcase of American capitalism in Asia. In 1980 they helped the Taliban, and used to support Mubarak and Gadhafi (but why not now?), and they even played a part in the installation of the Iranian régime in a little coup between England and the US......... in all cases, claiming 20 years later that they had the wrong guys.

Obama can say that America isn't at war with Islam all he wants...but...it is.

What is important to say in this subject is that USA is becoming more and more isolated in their view of world affairs. In past USA was seen as land of freedom and prosperity and now more and more is seen as bully and oppressor (even in those counties that consider themselves as USA allies and friends common people look at USA as cause of problem and not an world policemen who will solve those problems).

Osama Bin Laden Conspiracy Solution
So the thread about OBL has been dragging on with the two sides getting nowhere. I propose a fixed-alliance game of Diplomacy to solve it. On one side will be me, Invictus and Santa Clauswitz. On the other will be Darwyn, Sicarus and mapleleaf. The final unalligned player will be someone who hated the entire thread such as Sayjo or Siddhartha. My challenge has been put forth, I hope you all accept.
