It's Been Nearly a CENTURY Past... My Word, What Have We Learned?
It just now hit me, ironically after watching of all things a Peanuts special, where Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty, Marcie, Snoopy, and Linus are in France, that we are only three, four years awat from the CENTENNIAL of the War that Did Not End All Wars... and, after reciting "In Flander's Fields" Linus asked the question that now is stuck in my mind- What Have We Learned? A century later... how it still affects us... how does it affect you?

I have not been one to call Obama a Nazi or Facists like some other people (aka Fox), but after looking at this recent article...

http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/04/07/assassinations/index.html

"The Obama administration has taken the extraordinary step of authorizing the targeted killing of an American citizen, the radical Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who is believed to have shifted from encouraging attacks on the United States to directly participating in them, intelligence and counterterrorism officials said Tuesday. . . ."

To put that into perspective for any foreigners not familiar with the most important government document and most basic set of laws, let's take a look at the bill of rights:
Amendment V- "No person shall be held to answer for a capital... nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law;"
Amendment VI- "In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial"

Thoughts?

Salon.com? Seriously?

On a side note because I found this interesting...Amendment V says 'person'? Not 'citizen'? Very interesting indeed.

That is my bad, wydend. I was responding too fast. I mean, kill the cleric.
Are you not ok with targeted killings in general?
Hunter49r (189 D)
08 Apr 10 UTC
He hasn't been proven guilty of anything though. How about we just allow the government to kill anyone who criticizes them?
That's for chrispi
Yes hunter. That's the same thing.

@DingleberryJones- If there is enough evidence against him, then why not bring him in for a trial? Even a mass-murderer has a right to a trial.
jimgov (219 D(B))
08 Apr 10 UTC
Although none of us know the full story, it is obvious that this is a very dangerous person who is actively trying to kill Americans. His is not your run of the mill US citizen who is accused of a crime. He is living overseas and under the protection of either a foreign government or a radical group. You cannot just walk up to him and put him under arrest. And for anyone who thinks that the President just went out and said "kill him," that is absurd. I am sure that this has moved its way up the chain of command and has reached the point where the powers that be felt that this was the only way to deal with the situation. Obviously, their case was strong enough that it went to the President for the final go ahead and it was approved.
No I'm content with a targeted killing. If theycould bring him in I'm sure they would. I'm ok with no trial yet have voted democratic since 1992.

Why do people believe that republicans as a group would be pro killing him. Is it because they are hard on terror or dont care about the constitution / Bill of rights (in this case)?
jimgov (219 D(B))
08 Apr 10 UTC
Well I vote Democrat most of the time and I believe in being hard on terrorism.

We were able to capture Saddam, but we can't get some guy hiding out in Yemen Dingle? That is a bullshit excuse. And what 'extraordinary threat' can he pose if he is in hiding? And he hasn't been shown guilty of ANYTHING except 'anti-American' talks, which is exactly what this country was founded on. He is SUSPECTED of some terrorist planning, but there are a lot of suspects that turn out to be innocent.

A quick search shows me that we have pretty good relations with Yemen, so I'm sure there would be no problem of extradition if we asked for help.
jimgov (219 D(B))
08 Apr 10 UTC
You are right Hunter. We captured Saddam. It just took the entire US military, his own countrymen that he had tortured and fleeced for decades, and enough money to almost cause the collapse of the US economy. I say that price is too steep to pay again.
Hunter49r (189 D)
08 Apr 10 UTC
In order to kill him, we need to know where he is. It would be just as easy to capture him once they know his whereabouts, correct?
Jack_Klein (897 D)
08 Apr 10 UTC
If he is taking up arms against the US, this is roughly equivalent to a Confederate soldier getting killed on the battlefields of the Civil War. I believe the government at the time would claim that all Confederates were still citizens of the Union despite their actions to the contrary, yet its still not a violation of their rights when they get shot.

The big if is if he's actually in arms or not. If he is just providing rhetorical support, we shouldn't attempt to whack him. But if he's up in arms, fuck that guy. I would want to be sure, because as people have noted, its a damn slippery slope when you start trying to shoot American citizens.

And I'm a bleeding heart liberal.

It seems to me this individual relinquished his constitutional rights when he became actively engaged in trying to destroy the foundation in which this country was founded.
Hibiskiss (631 D)
08 Apr 10 UTC
A Republican/Conservative move but not really surprising because Obama isn't a Liberal anyway, he's a Moderate and all of my criticisms of him are because of that.

@PettyOfficer: Republicans have been violating the Constitution, Geneva Convention and every document in between and in America the Republican/Conservatives actually advocate torture and the assassination of "enemy combatants" which is exactly what this guy is.
Sir Collars (302 D)

@Hunter. It depends on the method of kill. Yes, if we sent in a special forces team with eyes on target, I suppose a capture would be relatively comparable--although arguable more hazardess to the operatives themselves, as they would have to approach the target in person, rather than say... sniping him from 1000y.

Alternatively, we could simply put a Tomahawk Strike Missile or some other guided munitions through his window...

Both articles were very vague on what the president and government actually ordered. For all we know the order is to take Awlaki into custody and only kill if there is no other option. Personally if that were the case, I still have a hard time accepting the assassination of an American citizen or any person for that matter (I'm not ignorant enough to believe we haven't done such things even in recent years). Under the right circumstances, if the threat is imminent enough then I'd say it might be a necessary action, but should be exposed to the public.

Either way, if it is really as black and white as the articles make it out to be, then its hard to believe that we could have a government that doesn't have a very good reason for this. If not then I'm all for protesting.

@ashleygirl
The problem is do we really know whether he is "actively engaged in trying to destroy the foundation in which this country was founded". That is the purpose of a trial.

"It seems to me this individual relinquished his constitutional rights when he became actively engaged in trying to destroy the foundation in which this country was founded."

By foundation on which this country was founded, do you mean the questioning of a corrupt government? because he seems to be an advocate FOR that, not against. He has been implemented in a crime, but all you have to do is take a peek at Guantanamo Bay to see that they aren't always right with their aquisations.

To quote the article

"At a panel discussion in Washington on Tuesday, Representative Jane Harman, Democrat of California and chairwoman of a House subcommittee on homeland security, called Mr. Awlaki “probably the person, the terrorist, who would be terrorist No. 1 in terms of threat against us.”

THAT is not a bad citizen. That is a target that needs to be eliminated.

I know a few folks have expressed a desire for this. It's fun playing the regular board, but this could be epic-- plus, we won't have all the same old strategies to rely on. A real hootenanny.
