question about a game
In this particular game: gameID=14198, austria was defeated, turkey survived with no SC's, and Italy resigned, also with no sc's. How come? They are all dead, since the game ended in the autumn and they all have to destroy their single unit that's still in the game anyway....

What do you mean?
tailboarder (100 D)
27 Oct 09 UTC
I mean exactly that. What is your story. You guys are from all over and have created one of the best sites on the web. How in the hell did you get together to create such a great site?
You work together so well and do all of this for what?
Entertainment?
Thrills?
Challenge?
I don't know but I support the site and applaud you...

Kestas starting this site long long ago, he choose the mods via the site quite recently actually, i assume it was based on how helpful those people were in the forum and knowledge of the game.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
27 Oct 09 UTC
Kestas started the site as a way to learn php. He developed it, and got a beta testing community together. As it progressed, and the adjudicator was fixed etc. etc. the community grew, eventually to the stage where it was a large enough one to need mods. Therefore Kestas made the mod power and emailed Chrispminis, thewonderllama and dangermouse, telling them that they were now mods. Later he added figle, then a while later me and a couple of days ago, Xapi.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

We got together because of the site existing.

For what? For the site and (in my case at least) ourselves. We like this site existing.

I like to know the history and like stories.
I think you guys are doing a great job.
stratagos (3269 D(S))

In the beginning, internet diplomacy was chaos, and without form
And Kestas looked upon it, and it was not good.
"Let here be PHP!" he said,
and it was, and it was good

Soon players became fruitful and multiplied
and Kestas became wroth when asked to spend too much time adjudicating fights with spoiled children
Many a time did he contemplate wiping his code base and starting from scratch

So Kestas said "Let there be moderators, to deal with the whiny putzs - and the occasional legitimate issue"
And it was. And it was good.

geez. yeah dangermouse i haven't seen in a long time either. thewonderllama hangs around some as far as i can tell though.

but yeah that's really interesting. i remember when there were no mods :)

i'm curious though, and this would really be a question for kestas, how did he get a beta group together at the VERRRRY beginning? did it come from some other development forum? just his personal friends? the very earliest days of this site are shrouded in mystery to me.

Yeah, I'm a Mod now.

I have to say there isn't any crowning scene or anything, I just got a mail from Kestas saying "So, TGM and Chrisp asked for some help with the moderation, and they recommended you. So you're a Mod now. If you don't want to be one, let me know.", followed by a bunch of instructions.
djbent (2572 D(S))

congrats Xapi!!!! well chosen on Kestas' part.

just curious, i know where TGM, Chrisp, Figle and Xapi are from - what about DM and TWL? are they also from exotic foreign countries? we do have quite the all-star trans-continental mod lineup =)

Oh, yes, he is from England, I remember now.

I don't know why, but I imagine TWL being from California.

dangermouse and thewonderllama are American.
thewonderllama (100 D)

If I'm not mistaken, both dm and I are from the US (Chicago for me), so if we get a some mods from Asia, Africa, and at McMurdo or Scott Base and we can have 'em all covered.
thewonderllama (100 D)
28 Oct 09 UTC
Hmmm...California, eh? Interesting.
djbent (2572 D(S))

huh, there goes my theory that none of the mods were from the US! ;D

well thanks to the lot of of you for all your hard work, it makes quite a difference. it's good times on here.

DM is in Washington.

Xapi, I think I know why you imagine that.
