Ghost, for the sake of argument, would playing here be detrimental to g ratings? Because we would be playing top players who are ranked as newbies right?

It would be for the G-Ratings I currently produce, yes, but given that I hope to get a hobby-wide system going (with Chris Babcock and a few other's help), that shouldn't a cause of any concern, because it would straighten out then.

ZaZa: Which is why I'd suggest some sort of rating system being used, because then you get lots of one games :)

You of course need to look at the performances when it comes to playing very top games more seriously.

well, I assume we will have more than 15 people interested (for 3 teams), and using only existing ratings (be it ghost-rating or points) might not be the best approach. Obviously, it might be a good idea to have some basic requirements, but maybe there can be some qualifiers also.

Having in mind this is team-based, we can have similar system here - make 10 teams, play against each-other, top three make it to the final.

I add my support to this opinion. The Ghostratings are nice and generally representative of, but they, like all rating systems are not perfect, and can indeed fail to perfectly represent skills between pairs. In a situation like this, a more internally regulated system for selecting the 'teams' might be in order, something along the lines of what Ivo suggested.

This of course has nothing to do with my imminent drop in ratings! :D

Ghost - would our records on other sites play into these systems? I have pretty good records on FB, on diplomaticcorps, cat23, and the Academy (ACD)... all previous dip-homes for me...

I think it may be best to see who would be interested in taking part and of those, who has the time to seriously partake in something like this. Then a decision can be made against the number of players actually wanting to take part.

You would clearly need to have the best minds playing this to have a chance of winning and doing well, but the most points and G - Rating wont necessarily give you that, although it saves time over having another competition to secure entry.

how do you play team diplomacy?

i would like to play, but i would also like to help sort out who will be on our team. i am not sure about another tournament, but maybe there is some other measurement that can be made, taking into account G-rating, participation and performance in other tournaments, performance in games with high-ranked players, and some other factors.

If I picked a team today it would be me, MadMarx, Babak, Polar Bear, and Akroma.

There are several others who would do very well, but my selection criteria is based more on style of play and win/draw/loss percentage than anything else.

Maybe we should accept nominations for team captains and co-captains and then let those people sort out who they think would be the best to represent our site. You could have the top 200 (or more, if you like) in ghost-rating vote on the nominated captains.
