What is your favorite pet? Species and breed.
I my favorite is the German Shepherd Dog. Intelligent, loyal, affectionate, protective, eager to please, and easy to train. Next in line would be an Amazon Parriot. Reasons as with the GSD.

I saw a documentary on German Shepherd trained for combat by the army, and they are incredible. They can hear trip wire, sniff land mines, and more. Is there a smarter dog out there?

A man with no legs said his German Shepherd drug him 5 miles back to camp after he was shot and could walk. 5 miles. Amazing. Saved his life.

Dachshunds are pretty smart and tough too. Our doxie, Sebastian (Johann Sebastian Cabot Bach Bolin) plays with two toys at the same time. He'll chew on a bone and use it to control a rubber ball when he wants to play keep away. And doxies were bred to hunt badgers and other underground rodents. Any breed that can kill a badger is one MFer of a breed.

P.S. I wanted to name him Wolfie for Wolgang Amadeus Mozart, but the wife said no, so we compromised. She likes Sebastian Cabot, the actor, and I like JS Bach's music (although not as well as WA Mozart's).

I love by Betta Cthulhu, but what I've always wanted is a pug. A babe magnet like no other, especially if it's a really ugly one.

Dream pet: lobster.

Dream Pets... Hemiscyllium ocellatum, a real shark (salt water, 5-7 gills, smaller one that reaches 3-4 feet at most), real chameleon (five toes fused into groups of 2 and 3, crested head, like rainforest with plenty of airflow), and an iguana.

No it is not the forum. I am a BDSM kinda guy. My pet is to be cherished, appreciated, loved, and her obedience is a gift to Me. Training takes on a whole new meaning for My pet. she is loved and cared for but also corrected when I feel the desire to do so. My pet is a good pet and does more than fetch...

Ahhhh... I have heard of the lifestyle. Does you pet travel on a leash when you get on a city bus? I heard about one man and his pet getting kicked off by the bus driver when he tried to get on. What happens between consenting adults and how they live their life style is their business as far as I'm concerned.

Another vote for the German Shepard, we had a german shepard crossed with a Red setter - loyal, playful and able to take out a Australian Brown Snake.

cool, my aunt and uncle had a white german shepard (died from cancer at age 7) that could open doors with his nose, he was awesome, and he listened really well. now they have a puppy white german shepard named Booch, he's huge, but well behaved (I love him)

@ sean- I do not expect everyone to agree with me. I have to say movies and pop culture have distorted thing which is why I say this isn't the forum.
I do have two dogs. A long hair shepard and a black lab.
They are both great dogs and totally different.
Troodonte (3379 D)

My favourite Pet is the Dog...
Breed: Rhodesian Ridgeback; For a lot of motives that include appearence, agility/strength, beauty, nobel behavior, loyalty, guard abilities...
I tend to like fast dogs with athletic look. I like the greyhound / saluki / sloughy /azawakh.

I have 2 dogs: a male rhodesian ridgeback (kizomba) and a female portuguese water dog cossed with labrador retriever (bulma - VERY intelligent).

As for the most intelligent breeds there are some studies about it and German shepard is in the top, but not in 1st place.
1st Border collie
2nd poodle
3rd German shepard
4th golden retrivier
5th Dobermann (another breed I really love)
...

I also have lizards: Leopard geckos...2 of them and live food to feed them (cockroachs).
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Oct 09 UTC
We always feed cricket to our Leopard Geckos (in a desert terrarium) as well as the inhabitants of our wetlands terrarium (Anoles and assorted frogs and toads).
Troodonte (3379 D)
12 Oct 09 UTC
I started with crickets, but it is more dificult to get a colonie starting, they jump and make a lot of noise, and their bx stinks!!!
Blaptica dubia are a specie of coackroach that don't smell, don't make noise, are viviparous, don't climb glass or plastic, don't jump and don't fly which makes the possiblity of a leak less probable, and they do a very god job in terms of nutrients for the Leos. It is also very easy to make the difference between an adult male and female, so getting a colony is quite easy.
Troodonte (3379 D)
12 Oct 09 UTC
Oh... and of course... my leopard geckos have all the things they need in their terrarium Draugnar (desert; hot and dry with hot shelter, "cold" shelter and humid shelter for sheding).

A usual discussion in reptiles forum: do you use UV light for your geckos?

my favorite is space cactus. its strong and friendly
My favourite pet is my whitesnake.
I keep him in my trousers, but he's always trying to get out.

If you pet him too much he gets all excited and can sometimes unexpectedly spit some kinda venom at you.

I have to be careful who I let handle him as a result of this. Only people I know and trust so as to avoid any embarrassment all round.
Sometimes he smells pretty bad, but good care helps a lot.
Alcohol has a really interesting effect on his behaviour, but remember to drink in moderation.
Otherwise he's quiet and easily fed.

I bet Dragnaur wishes he had one of those lil' whitesnakes!
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Oct 09 UTC
Draugnar has a bigger whitesnake, nothing little about his. Just ask his wife. <grin>

@Troodonte - My message inadvertantly said "feed" not "fed". I used the terrarium UV they sell that fits in a worklamp and had two of them (one UV, one incandescent) at the extreme ends of a 20 long for my Leopard Geckos. When I moved to KY, I sold them to a breeder along with the rest of my herps. I've been thinking about getting back into the hobby though but also want to build a marine tank again and need to keep an eye on the budget.

2 legged pets do not count unless they have feathers and scaley legs. @ troodonte I put the GSD higher on the scale but I'm biased.
Troodonte (3379 D)
13 Oct 09 UTC
@warsprite
it is not my scale...
I believe it is from a study that included a great number of breeders...
Unless you know all the other breedes you can't put the GSD higher or lower as you don't have the knowledge to compare...or do you?

@WeekEnd_Warrior

In light of my two legged pet no longer being eligible I have to choose fish as my favorite. They are quiet, don't make a mess, pleasant to look at, and make great conversation. I like a good variety and not particular to any one kind. Though I have seen a bass in an aquarium that was pretty cool. It ate any other fish that was put in the tank. The guy that had it ended up eating it. Which leads me to rabbits but then I guess I could say cow too, but that would be more livestock and not so much a pet.
tailboarder (100 D)

I have two dogs and enjoy both of them. The hard part for me is they are just 4 legs and fur. I had to train both of them, still have to feed them, and they make my wife (pet) happy so they get to stay. Animals just don't hold the same hierarchy that people do...
tailboarder (100 D)
13 Oct 09 UTC
That is not to say I don't like my dogs. I like them more than many people I run across.
warsprite (152 D)

@ Troodonte Yes you are right but I'm still biased. The top 3 are often so closely rated it is really difficult to say which is smarter.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
So they're going to make a Pirates 4, eh? Happy about that; the last one was BAD, but the 1st was just pure gold (the 2nd... eh...) and Depp as Jack Sparrow... best movie character of the decade! So, what's "On Stranger Tides" mean, and... yeah, let's just talk about Pirates and pirate stories and drinking songs... eh?
