It's just terminology. If you don't know it, you don't know it. I know I don't know it.
I imagine it works the same way with American football.
Oregon gets a good kickoff and Cal's kick returner catches the ball in the endzone. But instead of kneeling for the touchback he tries to run it out and gets tackled at the 15 yard line.
On first down Cal runs a QB option play, laterals to the back who is tackled behind the line for a loss of 2.
Second and 12 from the 13. The quarterback operates out of shotgun but the defense blitzes and sacks the QB at the 5 yard line.
Third and 20 and the QB is back under center. The ball is hiked and the QB hands it off to the running back who is running to the left, but then he gives it to the receiver on a reverse, he's got a huge opening on the right, just one defender to beat, he jukes, slips the tackle and is off down the field. He's out to the 30, now the 40, the secondary took the wrong angle and can't catch him, across midfield, 40, 30, 20, 15, 10, 5, touchdown!
But wait! There is a flag on the field in the vicinity of a hold, this ones coming back! The penalty is half the distance to the goal, so now it is third and 22 from the 2 and a half yard line. The QB is under center again, the ball is hiked and the defensive line breaks through and sacks the QB in the endzone for a safety!
