Suggestion
Maybe Diplomacy should have three types of forces. The army/fleet system is lacking. I vote to include a marine corps into the mix. These forces could move on water or land, but could only travel a certain distance from the coast.

i think we are all going through a cyclical downturn when it comes to politics and self posting argument threads. i guess you could blame the US election, attention seekers like sioraf and Christmas for that.
Sicarius (673 D)
10 Dec 08 UTC
if you watch the video you realize that this isnt really an argument thread at all
Hmm, let me see I've posted barely anything this week and probably last week too so how am I an attention seeker?

So who is the new Hitler? Is it Bush? If so, he's got a funny way of securing his stranglehold on power... It would be awesome if Obama were the new Hitler.
jman777 (407 D)
10 Dec 08 UTC
I would beg to differ but we can save that for another time.
Jerkface (1626 D)
10 Dec 08 UTC
I don't mean awesome like it'd be a good thing. I watched about half this video and I'm convinced on a few points but not the overarching one that we are systematically headed for a fascist dictatorship. It would inspire awe in me if the invisible powers that be were so great that the transfer of power from Bush to Obama was all part of the plan. Obama would make a better Hitler than Bush would anyway, in terms of a faithful match.

So how about the governor of Illinois being arrested today? Yet another in a long line of Obama associates that hi just didn't know what the guy way was about - I had no idea Reverend Write was a racist, I had no Idea Tony Rezco was a criminal, I ha no idea that Ayers was a terorist, I had no idea that Rashid Khalidi was an associate of Yassir Arrafat, I had no idea that Governor Blagojevich was a corrupt politician.

the guys either a HUGE Lier or the dumbest guy ever elected to the highest office in the US! Personally, I don't think he's that dumb ... so ... option 1 must be the truth
valoishapsburg (314 D)

I actually found this video very interesting, especially some of the points she makes. Ill post more later.

@ Jerkface....

In my opinion we aren't headed for a fascist dictatorship, we've been there for quite some time. For example, I think it seems interesting that you're asking who is the 'new/next' Hitler. I think that pretty much sums it up.
Dexter.Morgan (135 D)
10 Dec 08 UTC
philcore: the governor had no connection to Obama other than being from the same state... no role in his campaign, no role in the transition team, no role as advisor, and no connection regarding the naming of a replacement senator to serve out Obama's term. Apparently he is on tape referring to Obama as a "motherf****r". These are not two people that are close.
sean (3490 D(B))
10 Dec 08 UTC
philecore, for every corrupt democrat you will find an equal number of rebublicans. Halliburton war scaming and jack Abramoff make mayor Bleepojevich look like a small time loser. (oh wait, he already is a small time loser)
Marchosias (115 D)

American politics can go to hell. The only voice the people have are in state politics, everything national is run by Those in Power. And when it comes down to it, regardless of which party you vote for, you're still just voting for Good Ol' Boy Party A or Good Ol' Boy Party B. The 2 party system needs to die and make way for people with different ideas than what this stale system is made up of.
Jerkface (1626 D)
10 Dec 08 UTC
Whalen, I don't understand your post. If we were already there wouldn't it be crystal clear who our current dictator is? But it's not. If we're already in a fascist dictatorship then I must be living under a rock because I don't know who to pledge allegiance to, I still have the right to bear arms, I can cross borders pretty damn freely, I can exercise my freedom of speech to my hearts content... I think there are a significant number of hurdles that the government will have to pass before I recognize the USA as on the course to a dictatorship (or there already).

I dont know if the Illinois governer is corrupt at all. I mean he suspends all state business with bank of america in solidarity with the workers, next day he's in federal custody.
sounds fishy to me.
Invictus (240 D)
10 Dec 08 UTC
Oh, he's corrupt. I live there. He's been under investigation for something like five years. This guy reeks of pay-for-play politics.

Easily the worst governor we've had, and there have been doosies. He's the 8th, 8th governor who's been charged with a crime while in office. 8th!
Sicarius (673 D)
10 Dec 08 UTC
he's been under investigation for 5 years and he just happens to get arrested the day after??

Dude, you are just wrong here. I've been living under this nutjob since 2003 and the only surprising thing was it took this long.

He was arrested now because he was blatantly selling Obama's vacant Senate seat for favors. Plus all the other scandals. You're wrong.
Sicarius (673 D)
10 Dec 08 UTC
I'm not saying he's not corrupt.
I'm saying the timing is strange. maybe it means something maybe it doesnt. thats all I'm saying.

did you watch the video by the way
Invictus (240 D)
10 Dec 08 UTC
Yes, it was nonsense.

This goes to show how you really need to not jump to conclusions. You have no support on this. Watch THIS video. Pat Fitzgerald is a saint.

Whalen, If we are in fascist state you would be hearing about now someone knocking on your door with a battering ram.
Sicarius (673 D)
10 Dec 08 UTC
the point isnt the governer I dont give a shit. I wasnt trying to say he was innocent in the first place. you missed my point.

anyway
in what way was that video nonsense?
Invictus (240 D)
10 Dec 08 UTC
It doesn't matter what your point was, it was wrong. That's not why he was arrested or investigated at all. You've back peddling now because I exposed that your argument has absolutely nothing behind it.

It was nonsense because it's not true. She called pre-war Italy and Germany democracies when they were nothing of the sort. If elections qualify as democracies than Zimbabwe can be a democracy.

she takes disparate events and puts them together just so that they look like they support her point. She's just a hot conspiracy theorist.

Also, I looked her up a little bit and she's hardly a neutral observer. She was heavily involved in the Clinton administration and is very left wing. That's not a bad thing, but it does mean that she comes to the table with a heavily biased point of view.
warsprite (152 D)
10 Dec 08 UTC
Dexter the connection is not direct. Other than they both came up through the same political machine, in a state with long history of corruption, that makes any politician in from Ill suspect.

the 14 signs of fascism

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of “need.” The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.
6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople (Like Bill O'Reilly) and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government’s policies or actions.
9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
10. Limiting and surpressing organizing powers- Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

In what way am I backpedaling?
I said maybe the governer is innocent, maybe he is guilty it doesnt matter. I thought the timing of his arrest was strange.

you cant call a 50 minute speech nonsense then have your counterpoint be something so weak as that
Invictus (240 D)
10 Dec 08 UTC
Well, it seemed like you were jumping to his arrest being something like a state coup. You'll forgive me if I used your previous groundless assertions as a base to guess what you were getting at. There was a conspiracy here, it's just he was the one behind it.

Length doesn't mean it's good. Take "Twilight," for instance.

Again, those have to fit together just right for her to be correct. There are other reasonable explanations for the accusations she puts forward. The burden of proof lies on her.

Sicarius (673 D)
10 Dec 08 UTC
length does not imply quality you're right.

but when you refute that much material with basically, "nope"
then you look the fool.
so what are the reasons you disagree with whats she's saying?

Invictus (240 D)
10 Dec 08 UTC
I'm not gonna watch it again but I think her logic was faulty.

She puts her ideas together on the basis that these shadowy people in government want to take over without saying why. Many accusations, like the rampant sexism, need to be viewed through just the right kind of lefty lens to look like America is fascist. Her whole speech sounded like Oliver Stone's JFK with all the throw it at the wall and see what sticks theories.

Also, her very definition of fascism is wrong. She uses it as being when the state uses terror on its citizens, but really it's more like when the state becomes totally entwined with society and is the dominant force in people's lives. Fascism is pretty much socialism that doesn't even pretend to create equality.

I just disagree with her.
