Don't get me wrong, stories are great - and that movie is great... but I pick being real with your children... at least when they ask for the truth if not earlier. There was a real St. Nick - why can't we simply tell children about that? - real stories of giving have much more power than fake ones.

As a granddad of a 5 year old and another, let me assure you that Santa Claus exists. And he does care if you are naughty or nice, and he does like cookies and milk by the tree at night, with sweet dreams and joy for even the mice.

I understand where you are coming from Dexter, but the kid is going to be exposed to the Santa myth one way or the other. Would you encourage it, or break the news? Does it matter how old they are?

I wish he did. Christmas was so much more fun when I still believed.

I would not (did not) encourage it... my wife was behind it so I didn't sabotage her either... when they were old enough to ask I told them that some people believe in Santa and that it is a wonderful story and I would ask back if they believed. At about 8 years I would tell them the story of St. Nicholas... the historical figure... and more or less it was a smooth transition. My very sentimental 10 year old daughter knows that Santa is not real - but wants to leave milk and cookies out this year anyway (maybe there is still a hope in her that her logic about the situation is wrong).

Santa Claus certainly exists... Let me tell you why...

First off, you folks are thinking about this way too hard. What happened to your sense of mysticism in the world? Is there any magic or wonder left in this cold scientific place we've constructed all around us? In my opinion there ought to be.

However, that was just an opinion... I said Santa Claus does exist and here is why... Ever since I was a little kid, my mom has told me that if you stop believing in Santa, he stops bringing you presents. Well, he brought me presents when I was young, which shows he was around.... And still to this day (I'm almost thirty) I believe in Santa Claus! I proclaim it! And guess what? He still brings me presents... Living proof. I think all you non-believers will find this evidence incontrovertible...

We still give presents from "Santa." If it's from Santa, that means it's small and you don't need to write a thank you note.

In my house, Santa merely fills everyones stockings with litte toys, candy (and in my case, socks :P).

Dexter if you ask people who grew up with the Santa myth, most would tell you they have no regrets and alot of fondness for the whole ideal. Most kids catch on before the parents know, and milk it. As for the slow ones breaking the news is usally done with tact. If you consider all the myths kids see on TV and the computer today what's one more. All so Santa and his raindeer and gifts started in Europe not the U.S.

When I was little, I set up an immpossible situation that nothing short of Chirstmas miracle could fulfill but santa got the gift for me and it kept me beleiving for a little longer. Most kids( at least in my family) test these things and belive based on their findings

Santa exists. Not as the stereotypical, laughing fat guy in a red suit, but as an international movement of parents buying gifts for children. He's not a person, he's a worldwide organisation, which makes you think... what else is he capable of?

3. In this Depression world wide right now, many, many people don't even have internet, ps2-ps3, laptops, games, loved ones, Love is sharing and sharing is love. That is what Santa is about. I dressed up for 25 years as santa, and made many smile, laugh, chuckle, I did not promise them what they wanted but put in their minds what they could do as a special gift for someone or someone not they know.

i cant remember what country he was from but he would sneek into peoples houses at night and leave the children presents.

I am not into Christmas at all anymore, but I enjoyed it when I was a kid. My parents never really told me about Santa Claus though. I always knew my presents came from my parents. If I had kids I think I would be uncomfortable about lying to them. The other problem I have with Christmas/Santa Claus is the whole festival is so materialistic and driven by marketing. So much so that I have gone off the whole idea.

The concept of 'Santa' teaches us exactly the opposite of what you say. He stands for everyone in the world taking, for themselves, demanding everything they want and expecting it to be given to them on a plate with nothing in return but a mince pie.

Speaking as a non-Christian adult raised in a Christian school, what you're talking about is what Jesus stood for. Interesting that his tenets have been usurped by capitalism... and that most people have fallen for it.

Remember that Santa as we know him today started life as an advert for Coca Cola. That's why he wears red instead of green as he did in the 19th Century.
