Good physics interview
I suspect the following interview with eminent cosmologist George Ellis (coauthor with Stephen Hawking of "The Large-Scale Structure of Spacetime") is so good that it will be enjoyed even by those who suspect I am linking it only because of his religious views.

A Farewell To Draugnar
This is meant as a farewell to one of my oldest friends on the site. In the over 5 years we knew each other, we played in many games together (when he managed to get above 0 D) and got in countless arguments. He had many flaws and was the single biggest headache to deal with out of anyone while I was a mod, but he will be missed.

Reduced sentence because of large contribution.
I won't pretend that I thought of this out of nowhere, I won't even pretend to be able to objectively judge the situation, but I want to mention an option and a potential policy change that could be better for everyone. It's a compromise. In Draugnar's case, I propose taking his medal and/or keeping him banned for a few months or perhaps even a year as a sentence, but letting him come back after that. He's not like blankflag. He contributed in many ways.

Back on November 22nd 2013 Draugnar was given a final warning in regards to years of rule violations.

"Hi Draugnar,

Your problem on this site is that you continue to lie, scheme, manipulate, and take advantage at every opportunity. In the recent past, you have been aggressive to many members, including to the mod team, and you have been silenced NOT at your own request but after threatening to post porn on the website. With that silence you said you would leave, and you were told that if you would consider to stay, it would certainly not be automatic and would warrant further discussion.

Over the past several days, there has been an appeal to Kestas to review appropriate sanctions for your threats to TheMinisterOfWar. We have taken the time to discuss the issues and not jump to decisions, so we are not talking about what is happening this particular week or over a particular day. During the deliberation, we've seen you send Jmo friendly pm's for days, while turning right around and threatening TheMinisterOfWar yet again, scheming with Yellowjacket to make Jmo's life hell, and discussing how the mods are some inappropriate things which we will not repeat. Clearly you have not changed course at all.

All of us - admins, mods and Kestas - believe you're incapable of ever respecting the site rules, despite the far more then normal chances you've been given. Some wanted a ban, some wanted to give you one more chance. After a very long deliberation, we are going to do the following: you will be unsilenced, we will not announce that you have been unsilenced, and you can choose to do what you want with your ability to post in the forum again, but -and we want to make this as clear as possible- any further infraction will result in a ban. Any threat to mods, members, or the site, any pushing of boundaries, will result in an immediate ban.

It is unfortunate that we have gotten to this point, but that's where we are.

-Webdiplomacy Admins and Mods"

This was agreed upon by every mod, admin, and Kestas. Within the past 24 hours Draugnar has called for the “termination” of an admin, he has violated another members silence by posting their PM in the forum, he has claimed responsibility for the site outages last year as the work of him attacking the site, and he has stated his intent to several members via pm to attack the site via SQL injection tonight to start posting as other members. As a result, Draugnar has been banned.

Unfortunately, there are members who take it upon themselves to question every moderator action and decision. Several members recently have decided that they should be able to challenge moderator decisions on cases that have nothing to do with them, despite knowing they do not have all the details. We will try to give more details about our decisions in regards to silencing/banning. So everyone is going to have to meet us halfway there and trust to a degree that we're actually doing our jobs fairly. When it comes down to it, all the moderators are fair and lenient in their decisions, which you can see from the number of chances multiple players on this site have been given.
Everyone is welcome to appeal their own case, but when other members start shouting accusations without knowing the entire case it just wastes everyone's time. People are more than capable of appealing their own cases, and all the information for doing so is provided to them regardless of their punishment. We volunteered for moderator positions so that everyone else can play the game without worrying about these kinds of cases. So let us worry about these cases and have fun playing the game and posting on the forum. You do not need to worry about being silenced without reason, if there is ever a problem you will be contacted via pm or email by a moderator. Everyone is always given the chance to talk with us beforehand. Silencing and bans are only a last resort when members refuse to work with us.

While we are an extremely open forum, the overwhelming majority of the user feedback we have gotten has been extremely pleased that members can now post without being insulted and harassed to a vulgar degree. They are also pleased to hear the effort we have spent trying to get veterans back to the site, the site sponsored GR games, and site improvements. It is only a small handful of our members who wish to be able to post without any type of oversight, and those are the members who have refused to work with us as stated above, who have forced us into our last resort measures.

As always, we are more than willing to listen to and address members concerns. We simply ask that you grant us the respect and courtesy to address your concerns in private before you bring them to the forum in an aggressive manner.

I will miss playing with him but I respect mod/admin decisions. I believe that if you keep your nose clean, you have no repercussions.

Good luck, Draug. If you show up on another site, lemme know.
Wow - to see such a prominent player banned is crazy. I thought this was a joke in the beginning, not complaining against the decision but still, just wow. It's probably just draug and his lack of ability to control his mouth, but he said some really stupid things.

Well, dammit. Thank you Draugnar for happening to be in *all three* of my current games at the time of your banning.

I am very sorry that it has come to this but I cannot disagree with the action the mods have taken here. For those who might question the circumstances, I can certainly verify some of jmo's information - in a PM to me earlier Draugnar did indeed claim that the big site outage last year was a result of a DDoS attack, by him... and he also indicated via PM that he planned some kind of similar attack this time.

It's a shame to say goodbye to a long-standing member like Draugnar, but it seems the mods are justified here.

Without making reference to this specific instance can I say I like the fact that the Mods/Admins have the courage of their convictions to take positive action if they feel action is needed.
The internet allows some people to behave in an overly-aggressive manner, it is a strange thing but completely uncalled for. We have to have in the Mod decisions, I just hope that as you did with SandGoose you are open to review and reverse individual decisions if individuals show genuine remorse, that to me would be the sign of a strong team, the ability to review decisions made and if need be change them if appropriate.
I hope soon you won't have to keep banning and silencing because the people left will show some genuine respect for their fellow forumites, or just mute the dickheads (Obi) they can't stand ..... when you letting Maple back in?

I think the mods are too nice and are far under appreciated. I am happy to see them making a firm decision to enforce the site rules and basic decency.
Hopefully this will be a wake-up call to people who go out of their way to cause trouble.

i) I have no particular comments on the Draugnar case. Some of the actions listed seem egregious, and the mod team have obviously already been quite patient. I hope he is able to return some day in the future, but it's not immediately obvious to me what might constitute sufficient evidence of readiness for that.

I'm certainly sad to see him go, though.

ii) If there are things that the mods are going to apply as bright-line rules, which it increasingly looks like there are, then it would be helpful to make them actual rules. For example, we have been told recently that "posting real life information about site users is something we generally frown upon," why not, oh, I don't know, say that ANYWHERE except deep in some forum thread? I get that y'all don't want to make lines so that people won't cross them. But right now you're enforcing guidelines that you haven't even stated anywhere. And in very marginal cases -- it was obvious that dirge hadn't actually seen krellin's lawn, given that when you clicked on the map (which was linked by abge, a mod), it just said the town name, not an address. Much of the recent enforcements simply reeks of rigid enforcement of a rule without regard for circumstances. If that's the case, please go ahead and state the rule, and put it on the rules page.

iii) On a similar note, jmo's message is absolutely full of ambiguous clauses that could colorably be considered announcements of new vague guidelines to be harshly enforced by the mods -- or they might just be expressions of personal preference. Who can tell?

Much of it, in any event, amounts to pleas for the kind of secrecy and lack of transparency that UNDERMINE trust in mods, and do not foster it. Why, exactly, should I trust the mods if I see apparent unfairness in the case of other users, and the only appeal is privately by those users to the same mods who made the apparently unfair decision?

(I am NOT referring to any particular case that I think has been unfairly handled; I am just pointing out the procedural shortcomings of what JMO has said).

iv) On that note, I thank the mods for being as transparent as they were in this case (Draug's). It alleviated a lot of the concerns that we would all surely have had.

v) I would also really appreciate it if the mods would stop with the statement and/or insinuation, which I've now seen from several of you, that only people who have trouble from the mods have any issue with the new moderation style. I have never had so much as a single warning from the mod team for any behavior on the site*, but I'm clearly one of the most outspoken in questioning the new policies. There is no need to denigrate my or anybody else's standing on the forum for wanting to discuss how it is run. It is possible to disagree with y'all's decisions without being a malefactor.

I appreciate that it undoubtedly sucks to have people question your decisions. I hope that you can appreciate that members of this awesome community are going to have concerns about its remaining awesome, that we have ALL (not just you) put an enormous amount of time into making it a cool place, and that we are therefore invested enough to want to discuss how it progresses from here, even though (yes) we have no right to tell the site ownership how it will be run.

*The closest was probably dubmdell's no-move game, but I did not receive a reprimand then either.

vi) Thank you again for your work on the site. I'm sure it's a drag, and that there's a reason so many active members become mods only to disappear forever from the site within a couple months. FYI, I do largely trust the mod team's decisions, thanks in part to their grudging willingness to keep engaging in dialog about it.
