Sniff In the Bathroom Stall...
...and other forms of "alert". Yeah, so I entered the john and heard the inevitable "sniff" from the far (and favored) stall - the, "I'm in here...stay away" sniff to a fellow shitter.

Two questions: What is your preferred form of "alert" to fellow man, and what is your preferred stall?

How to Deal With Heartbreak...
So yeah, it's been a while, and I'm probably looking a lot like Conservative Man with this post, but I just went through an awful breakup and I need some help. I've never really had a father figure and I know this is pathetic, but this is the only place I've found good advice that I haven't had to figure out on my own...

Police will soon be able to shut your car engine off

Kind of worrying. No one should have the authority to control your property like that.

Genetic Engineering for monkeys, *by* monkeys?
People worry about technology taking over the planet. But now we've got cut-and-paste monkey DNA. If they make this easy enough for the monkeys to do themselves, we might find that they're not squeamish about global domination via genetically engineered super monkeys. http://www.theguardian.com/science/2014/jan/30/genetically-modified-monkeys-cut-and-paste-dna-alzheimers-parkinsons

Scientific basis for communism
I can't find any evidence of a scientific basis for communism. Is it the case that communism requires historical determinism to be true though? Communism only seems to consider "false consciousness", a view that history is static, "class consciousness", a view that history is dynamic and deterministic, but makes no room for history being dynamic and unpredictable.

Hello. I'm kinda new to Diplomacy and love the idea of the game. Been studying it a bit and its pretty fancy, havent been able to find people to play, tho.

Anyway. I play Master of Orion 2 (one of my fav strategy games out there), FreeCiv, and AstroEmpires (this one is a massive multiplayer strategy game in wich organizations of players [guilds] have a major role [funny thing is that denocracy doesnt seem to work in the game, All succesfull guilds are dictatorships])

What else you guys play? :)

Anyone else here but me aware of the boardgame "conquest of the empire"? yeah, it's badass- war strategy game based in the old roman empire days. Not hugely popular or well-circulated, but quite fun if you like diplomacy-type stuff. It has a little dice-rolling but diplomacy and strategy definitely plays a large part.

Well, there's also the big kahuna of Civilization. If you like MOO II (which is great, but I haven't seen in ages), Civ is even more addicting.

Axis & Allies, Race for the Galaxy, Puerto Rico/San Juan, 7 Wonders, Dragon Parade (oddly addictive), Panzer Blitz (more tactical than strategic, but anyway), Munchkins, Settlers of Cataan, Risk, Chess, Othello, Pente, Stratego, Chinese Chess, Majiang, Bridge, Carcasonne, probably some others.

Putin, it's shame we could never get along. I own and love most of those same games.
Theodosius (232 D(S))

Settlers of Catan, Mah Jongg, Munchkin, Stratego, various card games (luck and strategy).
Most of the games I play are heavily influenced by what my kids want to do or what I want games I want them to enjoy :)

Sins of a Solar Empire or a Railroad game sound interesting. A friend mentioned that she's had good luck with anything that had a German award on the cover.

I don't really know the definition of "strategy game," but these days I've been playing a lot of the informed minority mafia-like games like Avalon, Resistance, Bang, and Werewolves which I've been enjoying a lot. I started learning about Go this summer as well and I really like the vibe of it, in particular in comparison to chess.

@Putin

I've met very few other people who've played Panzer Blitz.

I found it to be a rather broken game, specifically regarding some vision/terrain issues. Have you noticed this?

Bunch of the above list, I'll add El Grande, SmallWorld, Dominion, Ticket to Ride, Agricola, and (old school) anything made by Avalon Hill back in the day (1970's/1980's), especially Advanced Squad Leader.

abge, I wish I could answer your question intelligently. I played Panzerblitz over twenty years ago, as a teenager. My first foray into tactical gaming.

Alhambra looks like fun--I've been considering that. Ticket to Ride is fantastic. Smallworld was okay. Dominion I did not like.

The only issue I take with Panzer Blitz is that amassing infantry on a hex increases your defensive capabilities vs artillery, which doesn't make sense. What I like about Panzer Blitz is the realism with regard to combining infantry and armored units.

I'm thinking about doing something different for Valentine's Day - no jewelry, no crappy yet expensive food, just something fun and special. Does anyone have a cool idea? I'm not really on a tight budget but let's just say a glass castle under the stars in the Swiss Alps is not an option.
