Assigning Countries
A general question about assigning countries:
So, if me and a group of friends want to agree to pick the countries ourselves, is there a way to do that? I know mods can reassign countries based on previous threads, but is there a way that, if all the players in the game agree, they can be changed without the use of a mod? The game I'd like to have specific countries for is gameID=133754, if that helps at all. Thanks

Consequentialism versus Deontology
In the game of Diplomacy, the emphasis is - in my opinion - on one's mastery of Realpolitik. To borrow from Wikipedia, it is "politics or diplomacy based primarily on power and on practical and material factors and considerations, rather than explicit ideological notions or moral or ethical premises." In other words, making the best of the situation.

Somebody contacts you in a gunboat game ... what do you do?
Let's say you are playing in a gunboat game, and somebody sends you a message by email, Skype, or some other out-of-game communication method. The message refers to the gunboat game, and says something like "support me to Timbuktu", or "DMZ Timbuktu?".

The only thorough and complete way to rectify the damage done, is to cauterise the part of my brain which remembers the content of the message. Ouch!

Ex-Israeli PM and Strongman Ariel Sharon, 85, Has Died
http://news.yahoo.com/former-israeli-prime-minister-sharon-dies-85-125933133.html Love him or hate him, after David Ben Gurion himself, Sharon's probably done more to define Israel as a PM than anyone else...I know I'd still rather him than that nut Netanyahu...Sharon could be ruthless, but he knew the peace process was necessary, whereas Netanyahu's West Bank dealings are short-sighted and endanger the long-term welfare of Israelis and Palestinians.

http://news.yahoo.com/black-rhino-hunting-permit-auctioned-350-000-033224692.html While it's admittedly morbid to auction off the right to hunt a living creature...if the rhino really is "male, old, and nonbreeding" and the $350K really does go to benefiting the rest of the black rhino population, and this particular rhino's already proving something of a problem because of his aggressiveness...is humane sentiment more important than practical aid in the way of the $350K?

That depends. I am not entirely clear: Does going CD register as a loss and you lose your bet?

but yeah, kind of
Lopt (102 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
Yep you lose your bet if you CD
Jamiet99uk (898 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
Yes. Yes I do. SplitDiplomat is an ass.

My own NMR in 1901 was because my connection dropped, my router needed re-setting and it took me a little over 15 minutes to get back online - by which time I'd gone into CD.

I was glad to see most people having the sense to immediately vote "Cancel". As Turkey, SplitDiplomat was handed a huge advantage by my issues, and the fact that Austria never showed up at all. A tainted win if ever there was one. Not classy, SD.

(gameID=133466)
Lopt (102 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
Not at all classy, but what's worse he attempts to blame me for it in order to save his own face.. That is just fuckin low
Ogion (3882 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
This is in part why I prefer 10 minute games to 5 minute ones. An internet reset can kill the whole game if any single player has it.

Well, I guess we have a sense of how splitdiplomat got that high rating.
Lopt (102 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
True that Ogion, far from a mystery now, I bet over half his games were won by NMR's in it...
Jamiet99uk (898 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
@ Lopt, what exactly was your reason for NMR-ing?
Ogion (3882 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
You know, one easy way to get the cancel is for all those who agree to cancel attack the one who doesn't. It tends to get quick compliance.
Jamiet99uk (898 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
That's not so easy when the NMR-ing states form a buffer zone.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
11 Jan 14 UTC
Ugh. SplitDiplomat is fucking notorious for playing and taking advantage of CD. He does it all the time and I'm sick of him.

I want a black list.

What of CDs when players drop out cause they are in a bad position and give up?
Isn't that like surrender and spoils to the victor!

But SplitDiplomat is just being an ass
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Split is a damn good player, guys, easily #1 in gunboat on this site.
Lopt (102 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
No wonder you say GB, because I doubt he could do proper real diplomacy. Still doubt he is the best, the #1 player wouldn´t feel the need to buff his record with flawed wins over and over again. I mean, where´s the joy in that...?

bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

He barely speaks English. Given that you played in his native language (I don't know what it is), I'm sure he'd be a solid player.

I can't explain why he chooses not to cancel or draw for CDs, but all of you are saying that he's a shitty player and shouldn't be respected for his status when he's still the best gunboater I've played. Play him sometime; you won't come close to beating him.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
11 Jan 14 UTC
He might be a good player, but refusing to draw/cancel when there's 1901 CD's, and then taking advantage of them to solo, means he will not get my respect. I've played in several games with him where he has done this, and I'm sick of it.
Lopt (102 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
I am not sure, but there might be some games in my history were I HAVE beat him. You seem to say like he is god. He might be good sure, could be, but certainly not THAT good. And I don't play in my native language either, a lot of people probably don't. Judging from what he's said so far he could do fine diplomacy with a little better attitude, but instead he just seems like an arrogant twat.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
11 Jan 14 UTC
As have I, Chaqa. I've also played in games where he has pulled out ruthless stabs out of nowhere and taken me down en route to a solo. Players that can do that have my immediate respect.

Lopt, of course he is beatable. I'm not insinuating that it's impossible - it's Diplomacy, no one is immune to defeat.

You obviously have a fine grasp of the English language, native or not. He can barely even communicate on the forums, let alone in a game. You need to have it mastered in order to communicate with it on this site - you do, he doesn't.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
11 Jan 14 UTC
I've talked to Split on here before. His English seemed fine, and he came off sounding rude and asshole-ish.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
11 Jan 14 UTC
You really won't concede an inch, will you? I'm not going to dig through the forum and find you some incoherent line of his. I've got a paper to write and cookies to cut. Maybe someone else would like to try getting through to Chaqa and Lopt.
Lopt (102 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
All we are saying is that he comes over in the wrong way, no matter whether he is a native speaker or not. That has nothing to do with it. Also, apparently he likes to play for false victories. What do you want us to get about that?
Ogion (3882 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
If he is as good as you say, then he has no need to play against absent players to bloat his rating. Frankly that undermines my respect for him a lot
President Eden (2750 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
(+1)
bo_sox is wrong as usual, SD isn't "easily #1." He's in the top tier with Lando, Barn3tt et al. He's not unbeatable; I took him down despite him having a significant advantage due to CDs (and surprise surprise he was the only one not drawing/cancelling, and voted both as soon as the tide had turned). He's damn good but he's not head-and-shoulders above everyone. And while he's certainly earned a high ranking he definitely abuses CDs a lot in live games.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
11 Jan 14 UTC
Split is far from unbeatable. His win/draw is excellent, although not the best, but since he only plays gunboats, and live gunboats at that, those statistics need to be taken with a grain of salt. He's very good at taking advantage of the idiosyncrasies of the live game format. Don't let his points fool you.
