What do you mean by 'Democracy'?
Inspired by conversation with YJ I have taken upon myself the task of educating and discussing the concept of 'Democracy' with the community here. So, what do you mean by 'Democracy'? and conversely what things stop a system being 'Democratic'?

If a player has units to destroy and he does not submit orders for it. How does the game choose which units are destroyed?

On "Elysium" and the Current Trend in "Message Movies/Shows/Books/Etc."
I'm curious if anyone here's seen the film, and if so, what they thought. I haven't...I've read the plot synopsis (though really I figured out most of it from the trailers that ran before Star Trek: Into Darkness) and read/seen reviews...and it seems like the kind if "message movie" I've grown to hate, namely, one with all the subtlety of a sledge hammer. If you've seen the film--fair or foul assessment? And what do you think of this trend in moves/books/etc.?

Things that piss you off that shouldn't......
....... when I'm entering an address on the internet and it asks for country of residence I want to select England so why can I only enter United Kingdom, do people in France write EU as their country of residence, it is utter bollocks.

That analogy really sucks to a point where it renders the thread worthless.

You know England is EU too, right? Most people consider UK a country, and I think that isn't weird. I don't get the big deal with Scotland and England both being countries and all? I mean, as I understand it, IMO, England and Scotland are more UK (as country IMO) than Hongkong is China. And Hongkong is China IMO, so England and Scotland are UK IMO.

Let me put it another way: is UK one state with multiple 'countries' in it?

Good point well made red, if you are going to *Mute* someone tell everyone you're going to do it first because that gives that mute 'real teeth'.
Today I want to make a point to all forum users that I won't be using the *Mute* facility,
I hope you all take that on board, it's very important :-)

The UK is a political and economic union of 4 countries, England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland. In recent years devolution has led to individual countries within the Union having more and more powers.
I live in the country England, to foreigners that may not seem important but it is to me because I have a national identity and that is English, not United Kingdomish.

I large number of people I know claim they're English rather than British. While they are English I find it quite divisive and petty to insist upon it. It puts them in the same class as those who 'consider themselves Scottish/Welsh first' due to the historical chip on their shoulder. English people have reacted to the recent (last 30 years) surge in nationalism in the other constituent countries by copying them.

The nationality is British. I'm English but if asked will say British. I don't see what the fuss is about.

I don't see why that's a big deal. My family is part of the Potawatomi tribe but they put down Native American or American Indian. There's a Bolivian family down the road from me that is forced to tell ignorant employers they are Hispanic when they are actually Latino. Big deal. They aren't making you wear a yellow star on your shirt because you're English so don't worry about it.

Yeah but to answer your question, Nigee, I don't see the problem.

When I go to do something online, I'm not offended that "Wisconsin" isn't an option, I'm more than content to pick "USA." USA encompasses all the information that the site needs were I to choose Wisconsin.

Why should websites add unnecessary encumbrances just to satisfy your sense of nationalism?

I agree with Nigs that those drop down lists are a pain in the arse. They make trying to find your country bloody annoying. Some have the United Kingdom at the top, which is easy enough. Some put it in alphabetical order, and then you search for Great Britain under G, Britain under B, England under E, UK under U... and your guess is as good as mine which of them they have used.

When I can get away with it I don't bother anymore and say I'm an Afgan
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
17 Aug 13 UTC
Sure, Octavious, but the fact that drop downs are a pain doesn't really address the point old Nigee was making.
Octavious (2701 D)

I find it often best to ignore the specific point that Nigs is making. Otherwise I feel inclined to argue, and then I feel obliged to read the dribble he writes back, and all to often I get depressed and generally lose faith in humanity. It is a grim spiral best avoided.

YJ - "I still don't understand why Nigee gets so much crap here. He has a great sense of British (oops, ENGLISH) humour!"
Viccy - "No he doesn't, Yellowjacket. He's just an ass. Or mentally ill."

That made me laugh Viccy, it could be a line from Dads army.

Are you one of these guys who abuses people in your car when you're driving the other because you think you won't be held responsible for your anti-social behaviour? ....yeah you stick that middle finger up in your rear view mirror and show everyone how tough you really are. I like the fact that I could only be either an ass or mentally ill and not both, are they mutually exclusive?
I'm being objective here so I have to +1 Viccy for making me laugh out loud, the sheer quality of his response demands the man be taken seriously
Just thought I'd make this point, I won't be using the *Mute* (with or without asterisks) because he so funny !!

I thought Great Britain referred to the island, as Ireland refers to the island. On the island of GB there are three historical kingdoms, England, Scotland and Wales, which at different points in history were separate or combined countries. And that currently, those 3 kingdoms are united with the northern part of the island of Ireland, in what we call the UK. With the southern part of the island of Ireland being its own independent country called the Republic of Ireland.

That's what I read in my tour-guide books recently, anyway. I'll be there for the first time in 3 days from now. That's right UK/England/Britain; a real-life gun-toting Arizona tourist is coming to town!

Yippie Kay yay mother fuckers!

@philcore

All true except the bit about Wales being a kingdom. It was a collection of princedoms with a single most powerful prince who took the title 'Prince of Wales'. Then the English conquered it and thereafter the heir to the throne took the title 'Prince of Wales'. As a result from the Middle Ages up until the 1707 Act of Union the two primary units on the island were the Kingdom of England (Wales included) and the Kingdom of Scotland.

Hope you enjoy it here anyway! I have relatives in Arizona and they always love to visit.

Thanks hereward. I'm pretty excited about it. The only other country I've been to is Mexico (4 hour drive from Phoenix). When Mexico started requiring passports to travel there, I decided that the first place I was going to get it stamped other than Mexico, was going to be England or Ireland. I'm going to get both this trip, going from London to Shannon in 10 days.

Speaking of passport stamps, and getting back to the OP, when I land in Heathrow and go through customs, will they stamp it UK, GB, or England?

@ philcore: "Speaking of passport stamps, and getting back to the OP, when I land in Heathrow and go through customs, will they stamp it UK, GB, or England?"

None of those, I'm afraid. The UK's passport stamp just states the point of entry/exit, not the country's name. It looks a bit like this:

====================
IMMIGRATION OFFICER
<DATE>
HEATHROW
====================

(Where <DATE> is the date of entry)

A Simple Question
Suppose we broke up into real-life nations based on that basic political spectrum test a lot of us just took, so there'd be a Nation of Krellin & Co., a Nation of Abgemacht and Associates from the Green Corner, etc. Aside from the fact every Green Corner citizen (I can't tell if your corner is blue or pruple, krellin--damn colorblindness!) would want to kill me...would this be for the better, Likes with Likes, or would this just lead to worse consequences?
