Does webDiplomacy keep statistics on how many times each country wins on its site?
I was just wondering whether these statistics are kept, and if they are, what it might show about bias towards a particular country.

Cheating accusations
In light of philcore's recent discipline for cheating accusation posting;

Would it be illegal to accuse someone of NOT cheating? If we tell somebody that they are in fact a legitimate and fair player, there is a loaded implication that there exist others whom are not, and such a comment could be construed as an accusation of cheating “a priori”.

This is raised by Willard Van Orman Quine’s approach to ontology. If we acknowledge that there are cheaters and non-cheaters, then we are implicit in creating the “universal” nominal meaning of a cheater, and may thus be in fact accusing that nominal meaning of cheating.

Please could the mods clarify this as I am confused.
Partysane (10754 D(B))

Seriously?
SYnapse (0 DX)
10 May 13 UTC
Let me clarify.

A cheating accusation would look like this:
P is X

A non-cheating accusation would look like this:
P is NOT X

If this is translated into
X is not P
then therefore what is X?
X is X.

Therefore cheaters are cheating implicitly in this statement. Would this be a breach of the webdiplomacy rules?
SYnapse (0 DX)
10 May 13 UTC
Following this to it's conclusion, it would seem that the rule would read:

Do NOT post NON-cheating accusations on the forum, or in other words;
Do NOT NOT post cheating accusations on the forum, which becomes;
Do post cheating accusations on the forum.

You can see where the confusion would lie here.

It would be a real positive thing IMHO if the Mods/Kestas the rules about cheating accusations, they get so bent out of shape about it and I don't fully understand why.
If the person is a cheat ..... great, banged to rights.
If it is a false accusation then it makes the person making the accusation look like a dick
Isn't it time to grow up a bit, in some ways this forum has really matured and developed over the last year but in other ways it has stayed just the same.
Maybe there is a historical context as to why these CA rules even exist that an old-hand can explain to us newbies......anyone?

We had this protest once in the Netherlands during the Vietnam war. One guy held up a sign saying "Johnson murderer". He got fined for insulting a befriended head of state. Next protest, two guys were holding signs side by side. One said "Johnson", the other said "Murderer". Both guys were fined since it was obviously the same infraction according to the judge. It caused quite some upheaval in the press. The next protest, two guys were holding two signs side by side. Both were empty. Everybody knew what was on them. Nobody was fined.

What if I said that I REALLY do NOT think some hypothetical new arrival on the site is in fact an old player? What if I fill in a name? What if I leave it blank?

I understand the rule of cheating accusations, but as Sun Tzu said, laws should be strict, enforcement should be flexible.

"Laws should be strict, enforcement should be flexible"

Without being rude are the Mods objective and smart enough to use this maxim or do they just have to follow the written rules because it is
"more than their jobs worth not to"

Why do we enjoy baiting the Mods so much, it's like an unwritten rule of the forum, but I suppose if they keep on doing what they do they will attract attention.

SYnapse is having a bad week. Over on vdip he's making similarly crazy arguments because he's about to become the first person ever to CD so many times that he will be permanently stuck at 0 D. Points don't replenish back to 100 when you CD, and SYnapse thinks this rule is a conspiracy against him.
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

I suppose it would be the same as if someone had said it in spanish, and one of the mods could understand it (therefore it would probably be a regular cheating accusation)
If the mods don't know what the codeword is, it would probably work, but it would constantly need to change it so they wouldn't catch on, but it would be impossible to develop a forum-wide code that the mods wouldn't be able to understand, as the mods see all.

grking you raise a point. If players start making codes would the admins need some kind of Enigma machine to break them?

For example cGhpbGNvcmUgaXMgYSBtdWx0aQ==
grking (100 D)
10 May 13 UTC
They wouldn't, because in order to distribute the code, the codewriter would need to post either a link to the key, or the key itself somewhere that the users of the forum could readily access it, and if the forum users can access something, the mods probably can as well.

Another interesting point. Is it invasion of privacy if they intercept our private messages? What if I want to talk about a very sensitive subject with someone I know on webdip - can and should the mods have the ability to read those messages to look for cheaters? If I post somebody my bank details, they might well be breaking the law.

This thread is just stupid and probably needs to die.

Oh if you prefer, Oli's version: "I would prefer this thread just dies because no one replies to this nonsense."

If you think a mod has done something inappropriate, please email the mods and ask an admin to look into it. That's what admins are for. If you think an admin has done something inappropriate, email the mods and ask another admin to look into it; that's why there are more than one admin. If that doesn't work, then you can appeal to Kestas. That's the proper procedure for getting your grievances heard. Throwing muds in the forum isn't going to get anything done for you. On other sites, mods will close this thread as soon as they see it, but that's not how we do it here. We give everyone here a rather big latitude as far as what they post and we have a few rules about what they can't post.

You can try to code "cheater" into whatever you want, but we are fairly good at figuring it out and our forum members are fairly good at figuring it out. I'm not challenging you to create a method to bypass us. I'm just letting you know that it's a waste of time.

Also, this is a private site. Kestas owns it. It's not a public-owned site.
If you don't think Kestas's own rules for his own site is any good, please feel free to leave or create your own website with your own rules and have your own mods do things the way you want. Kestas is generous enough to make all the codes available for you to setup your own shop. Nothing prevents you from doing any of that.

Calvin Coolidge
It seems that no one recognizes the good that Coolidge did. He was a pure capitalist, which means he lowered taxes (to 1.125% on the lowest bracket), and he cut spending drastically. All this led to the greatest boom in American history. Unfortunately, his successor raised taxes to outrageous levels (63% on the top bracket), and began spending more. All this led to the worst depression in US history, though FDR prolonged it. So why doesnt anyone give Coolidge credit?
