Are countries assigned randomly?
New to this site here, so sorry if this is answered elsewhere that I didn't find. Are countries assigned randomly when a game starts? (I'm noticing in the Championship Belt Game Series that xorxes always plays Austria and captainmeme always plays France, but have not found any setting for choosing a country or assigning preferences or anything.)

Uber is kind of cool
So, I dont actually plan to spend money. But I downloaded this cool app called uber. I think its like, taxi cabs or toy cars or something. But they move. They wiggle around and travel places on this cool map that looks a little like real life. I watched this one car strolling down a highway. This is neat. How do I take over one of these cartoon car thingys

Hiliary rigged her nomination
Former interim DNC Chairwoman Donna Brazile has come out exposing the Clinton campaign of taking over the DNC prior to her getting the nomination as the party's candidate which gave Clinton the control over the party's finances, strategy and all the money raised.

so·cial·ism
noun
a perfect political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.

synonyms: leftism, welfarism; Anything but dumbfucktrump

policy or practice based on the political and economic theory.
(in Marxist theory) a transitional social state between the overthrow of capitalism and the realization of communism.

Assuming this is a serious thread, I don't think Communism will in any way work in the USA. Nor Authoritarianism. The problems are so many and almost beyond remedy. Because of the nature of American political institutions, the best that can be achieved in reform is "incremental change". From "outside, looking in" I think the first reforms need to be in 1 reforming the taxation system, and 2 reforming & substantially improving public education.
However I just cannot see how it's even possible to build the required community consensus and support for the required reforms in the US population. The political parties appear to be incapable of providing the leadership needed.

Would a single "strongman" be able to enact sweeping reforms given the way the Constitutional structures of government in the USA are designed ? Power is divided and spread across the various entities, President, two parliamentary houses and the Supreme Court for starters. Then there are additional bureaucratic forces..Dept of Justice, FBI, CIA, Defense Dept, etc. There are also powerful private sector players..Wall St, Armaments industry, Oil industry, Media etc.
Trump is supposedly a strongman & President. But so far he can't get Congress to pass any significant reforms. He can only do what others will let him, eg increase spending on the military.

You should study how Hitler took power. Also, look at the rule of PRI. All you need to do is to suppress the opposition vote (check), have active propaganda arm (check), set up gerrymandering (check) and have paramilitaries (check) to ensure one party rule. Having a majority of judges who will compliantly rule in the party's favor is helpful (check)

If Bannon claims a few scalps Luther Strange and Jeff Flake style, the one perma-party will be increasingly aligned and willing to dispense with Democracy. Already a majority of republicans would favor suspending the 2020 election.

So, it wouldn't be at all hard for someone with better political skills than Trump to keep the euro racy on. Pats. Corporate America has zero interest in Democracy for sure. Under fascism and various authoritarian states, the corporate sector has been very supportive of authoritarianism.

Checks and balances are useless when one party controls them all and uses them to prevent the opposition from ever winning. No question many Americans would support his

Step one

We impose a 78-99% tax rate on earners making over 100,900 per year

Step two

We enslave their families and force them to comply with our taxes if they hope to free their friends and fam from tax slavery

Step three we take that money and fix our roads
Fix our schools
Fix our gun laws
End oil production
End war
Fix the earth
We invest in high speed rail
We bailout america, every family gets a check for 40,000$ to spend, invest, create jobs.

Step four we reward the wealthy who complied by only taxing them every other year. We release their enslaved families and friends

Conclusion: America becomes great.

I could never describe American as democratic. You have a choice between two parties that spend obscene amounts of money to self promote. Neither has any interest in instituting any real improvements in the lives of the people. The sole objective being to get into power and stay there.

As a nation that spends so much on it's military and so little on anything else, it is only saved from despotism by the fact that the president is only allowed to serve two terms.

Americans have no credibility where it comes to government. You elected Clinton, the Bushes, Reagan and now Trump. Anyone with a shred of self respect would be immigrating to just about anywhere else.

Caught between morons on the one hand, and corporate control of your electoral process - you are buggered with the illusion of democracy. I don't know how you stand paying the price for apathy the way you do.
MajorMitchell (1605 D)

Whilst Dipbro Brainbomb makes a few reasonable suggestions, fix the (public, my interpretation) schools, fix gun laws, invest in high speed rail, some of his other suggestions, imho are just not reasonable, practical of achievable.
For instance his suggestion on tax reform.
A much more moderate rate of tax on higher incomes combined with the removal of a wide variety of "loopholes" would be quite effective. Similarly with business taxes. You don't want to kill businesses, or drive the wealthy offshore.
For middle income earners tax rates should be modest, and the "tax free threshold" should be raised to a level that protects lower income earners.
Universal industry based superannuation schemes are a way of improving savings for lower & middle income groups.
Raising the minimum wage is a much needed reform. Germany and other European countries have relatively "high" basic wage economies and that works quite well. Domestic consumers can purchase goods and services and that strengthens their economies.
I don't think the answer is a "strongman" or small elite group having authoritarian powers. Political reform, on donations, lobbying etc, plus building consensus over a broad base for reasonable reform is difficult, but I think the best way to achieve reforms. Finding inclusive solutions.

Taxes would be far simpler and avoidance far more difficult if Land Value Tax was used as the primary source. No income tax, corporation tax, death duties etc etc. Total the amount the country needs and divide that up according to the value of the land. Those that use more of the planet pay more. Those that use the bits everyone wants pay more.
Tax could still be raised from voluntary anti-social activities such as driving, drinking, drug taking.
Removing tax from wealth creation and putting it on those that use society's resources seems to me to be much fairer.

Incomplete orders on the small preview map are a problem.
Not all orders (most notably support orders) are shown on the small preview map of a game and, especially in Gunboat, this is pretty problematic.

See title. I started playing it about a month ago. It's quite fun and a very different challenge from Diplomacy. I'm still getting my head wrapped around the editions, but I believe my group plays the "Classic" version (Spring 1942 start and there are no artillery, destroyers, etc.)

A friend and I are also working on a "present-day" version.
