Feature discussion: newbie diplomacy
So, one feature that would be amazing for new players is a "test the waters" mode for diplomacy.

Something that new players could try to see if they like Diplomacy, without the commitment to a four month game checking the site every day, or setting aside five hours for a live game. Maybe it's a short game up until 1902? I have no idea. Ideas?

How do people communicate in Gunboat?
I'm playing in a couple gunboat games, and it seems like other players are working well together, with regards to support and such. I trust they are not messaging each other, and so I would like to know how they figure out what the other players are going to do.

Creating an app for webDip.
Because of my schedule, I have gotten into the habit of using my phone for webDiplomacy, but the web format isn't the best for a small screen on a phone.
This thread is more about a discussion on how the app should look, support, etc.

Are you offering to help (not being snarky, legitimate question)?

An app, or at least slightly better mobile support, would certainly be nice, but we have a shortage of available developers right now, which is the main thing standing in the way of a lot of things that would be nice.

Seems like a pretty solid amount of work. An app would be super duper awesome but let's keep in mind that this is a free site kept going by volunteers.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

I say this every time, but what we're short of is developer hours. We're not short of design ideas, feature ideas, or managers.

Anyone who wants to work on improving the current mobile experience is extremely welcome.

A major problem is that I don't have an android, and most of the mobile issues seem to only affect android for some reason.

You can get an app for this built on a website like www.freelancer.com for only a couple of hundred dollars.

ATC I have tons of issues and I'm an apple user. I think Apple users are just so used to crappy products we don't complain. Using the forum requires such precise finger presses I often click the wrong thing and get teleported miles away to someone's profile page offering to sell me oil paintings and passports for low low prices...

I've got a Samsung phone and use it all the time to play at WebDiplomacy without any difficulties, and I'm a fuddy duddy with limited internetting skills
orathaic (1009 D(B))

I'll say this again. Of the two options for mobile development hours, (an app vs responsibe web design) the app has the advantage of increasin our profile on the apple app store (and whatever android use) and the disadvantage of taking a lot more work (though with modern technology it isn't twice the work for two platforms)

We just need someone to put together a project and the willingness to learn about app design. Volunteers? (An yes this will look good on any CV!)

CB- what issues do you have other than missing buttons? I have no problems at all.

I'm using an apple phone, and the interface is a pain. Clunky and annoying. But it works fine, just not optomised.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
28 Sep 16 UTC
I agree it's not nice, but as far as I know everything works. Last time I checked android, quite a bit of the site wasn't displaying properly (odd shaped press boxes, strange sizes of pause notifications, etc).
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
28 Sep 16 UTC
I'd welcome any efforts to improve the mobile experience. The best way to go about it is to make the site more responsive, because we don't have a particularly nice API for a mobile app to work with (particularly the way that orders are authenticated will be very annoying).
orathaic (1009 D(B))
28 Sep 16 UTC
@ATC you can run a virtual android phone on your pc, not sure how much time and effort it would take to setup, but i'm pretty sure it is standard practice.

Might be a useful skill for you in general.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

Also, i was reading the developer forums, and Kestas talked about an API, mostly for tournaments, back in 2009. Which makes me sad it never happened.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
28 Sep 16 UTC
@ATC- When I go to use the drop down options in-game the only way to select them is to subsequently click the IRL box at the top of the screen otherwise the orders won't work. It's weird.

I'm a developer, yes. I don't do much web/front-end work, though, mostly desktop application or calculation-engine things. I'd be willing to help but I think we need to figure out a game plan, whether it's just a front-end redesign or a full rewrite of the website.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
28 Sep 16 UTC
ATC has a gameplan. Talk to him about it.
An API would be awesome. We could build our own apps around it. Front-end webdev here, can maybe help out if this gets off the ground?
