Feature discussion: newbie diplomacy
So, one feature that would be amazing for new players is a "test the waters" mode for diplomacy.

Something that new players could try to see if they like Diplomacy, without the commitment to a four month game checking the site every day, or setting aside five hours for a live game. Maybe it's a short game up until 1902? I have no idea. Ideas?
Maniac (189 D(B))

Great idea ATC.

Perhaps a mechanism whereby players sign up until 1902, then if they like it continue, if they don't they hand over to a reserve (more experienced). This is so much better than CDing and dropping out as the reserve won't have to contend with missed moves that has set them back and rest of players get a better game experience.

"I have no idea. Ideas?"

"Great idea ATC."

I like Maniac's idea. Make them unranked. Maybe get an experienced volunteer so people feel like they're experiencing the real thing. Could even have the reserves be super informal TA types if there were enough interest.

A proper "looking for game" queue could solve this. You just mark yourself available to replace positions (or join new games), and the site would email you once the game started.

It's an interesting idea. When I was new I think something like a 10 minute / phase live game up until 1902, with an instructor explaining things like convoys and sending examples of opening press, would have been extremely useful. Perhaps combined with a few YouTube videos showing similar things.

The press is most important, I think. I had literally no idea what to say when I started, and a few real world examples emphasising the huge variety of different styles would have been wonderful.

Two players playing one country . All press and moves can be seen or imputed by either ATC knows what I'm talking about

Another possibility would be to have a mentor queue. I'd be perfectly happy to do a School of War style mentoring for new folks also even in other games if we can have games where that is allowed

two player to one country can be used for direct mentoring

I didn't pitch the idea very well, and I'm not sure how much support it has, or how much demand there would be from new members...but Ogion raises the Mentor suggestion
I support that suggestion.. We create a group of Mentors from interested players, use unranked classic games for new members.

New members vary in their level of experience.. If we want to expand the player base we cannot rely on new members who already have some experience in Diplomacy... And I think we should look at ways to recruit people who have little or no experience with Diplomacy, and provide them with support / training.. there's no point in encouraging people with little or no experience to join if we then lose them quickly because we haven't provided the support they need.
If we're promoting the site to attract new players, we should do what we can to improve the retention rate of the new players who do join

thats what the School of War already is

The school of war involves 7 mentors and professors, etc. I was thinking of just signing up for a mentor for any unranked game and you might be the only mentor in a game. Less set up and can be done on a rolling basis.

When we did the Experimental Openings way back when, we canceled the games after 1903. That was before there was an option for unranked games. It was basically a license for us to try whatever stupid(/sometimes smart) shit we could think of and it went really well. Having this same sort of setup for new players and even for experienced players to privately use as a sort of sandbox would be really cool.

As for the School of War, we just ended the current one and it was pretty bland. We have had talks in the past about changing it up so that it is similar to the Peanut Gallery, where a lot of the community has the opportunity to post, go off on random tangents, put forward a bunch of different ideas, and professors don't have to throw up some masturbatory analysis every phase. We're probably going to try something like that next time we run the School of War games.

I like the idea of peanut gallery style school of war, and a rolling list of mentors for new players. I'm happy to mentor anyone who wants to draw as Turkey or yorkshire pudding as England.

do unranked games count toward RR
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
04 Oct 16 UTC
If so: then good these ossified I ranked games could really benefit new players.
If not: then maybe these games should be considered different from regular unbanked games in order to provide RR to new players. (Something which makes sense considering a new player who commits to several of these will be showing how reliable they are)
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

Yes, unranked currently count towards RR.

I can't imagine that people would be interested in playing the first couple years of a game and then quitting. What would the appeal to that be?
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
04 Oct 16 UTC
Supersteve- think of it from a new player prospective:
-short game to test waters
-no commitment in regards to points
-possibility of training from experienced player
-helps establish RR to get into better games in the future.

Never mind me. I'm just an overly critical criticizer of the honest efforts of others that are trying to improve the site. It isn't my parents' fault. They raised me right.

How do people communicate in Gunboat?
I'm playing in a couple gunboat games, and it seems like other players are working well together, with regards to support and such. I trust they are not messaging each other, and so I would like to know how they figure out what the other players are going to do.

Creating an app for webDip.
Because of my schedule, I have gotten into the habit of using my phone for webDiplomacy, but the web format isn't the best for a small screen on a phone.
This thread is more about a discussion on how the app should look, support, etc.
