Well, the problem is that they are relative. If the average skill in one place is lower than in another, the Ghost-ratings will be different.

The same thing is true for Elo. Go onto chess sites and you'll find people with higher Elo-ratings than Anand, but that doesn't mean that they are better than him, it just means that the difference between them and the average player on that particular site is more than the difference between Anand and the average serious adult chess player off the internet.

It would clearly be impossible to have a non-relative measure of skill, because you measure by results- which are influenced by other players' skill as well as your own. You only know that one player is better than another, but worse than a third, so with two distinct populations, it isn't really possible to compare players accurately.

That is why you cannot compare Elo ratings in chess from 30 years ago to those of today. Over shorter periods, however, you can.

Hense trying to find markers across the two populations to compare by, the idea being to try and compare the position of these players in each set of results, and in doing so find a comparison between the sites.

Just as a note Ghost: if a plyaer hasn't played on one of hte sites for longer than the other their ratings *shouldn't* be the same as they're likely to have got better or worse.

One other problem with seperate populations and timings is that rating systems can suffer from statistical flaws. For example, Elo ratings in chess deflate as players improve.

(To put it differently someone shouldn't be ranked higher one site than another, which is what I thought Dave was saying he expected to be)

I think the point was that Ghost is going to do a separate list for Facebook. That way if there is a distinct statistical difference in the Ghost-ratings of players who are on both sites, you can compare the relative strengths of the two sets of players. At least I presume that's the point of it, anyway! I'm sure Ghost will say otherwise now...

ah, ok, read that link above. Interesting rating system. Also, I read the wrong lists. I'm actually, #169 on this site and #38 on FB. So, not as bad, but still a decent difference.

Does that hold true for many, are you generally ranked better on FB? Odd too, as I have a few hundred more pts here.

I think that is what Ghost is trying to find out.

I'm going to see if I can get say 20 players who are on both sites, compensate for not having played as many games on one as on the other, and try the same for long lapses since playing on one site and not the other, and then come to a judgement of the relative skills of the two sets of players.

Since you only have one completed game, it wouldn't really be possible to make any judgement from that.

What I am doing is taking rating information from facebook diplomacy (a facebook application version of this site) and comparing it to the same rating data for this site, and using the fact that players are on both sites to compare the sites' relative standards.

Ghost - have you had many people e-mailing you direct (rather than posting directly here) as at the moment I can imagine your sample is rather small.
Oh, and what did I tell you about my rating being significantly larger over on FB? There is one major anomaly with it though - I took over a couple of guaranteed wins from CD, although I probably wouldn't have if I'd known that they were such... I just hope that my rating gets the chance to improve here!
