Octo - this is a dark matter and I am not a scientist, we need experts here, I'm just shining a light onto the issue hoping to flush out some experts on the subject.

Unless....shock...the authorities already have access to the 'dark net' and allow such pornography to be distributed in order to bust criminals and morally questionable persons who they can't convict for other things, and maybe run social experiments through 4chan and reddit. The darknet is just a tool, Nigee. There were different tools before it existed, like mail, which is still in use, and once the darknet is busted, they'll just move to other tools.

The darknet is not the problem or the solution. It's a distraction for alarmist reporting.

If you look at how most of these rings are busted, it's done the age-old way, through social engineering - getting the confidence of a member, joining up, and finding who is involved. That was the way these were busted fifty years ago and it's still the way it is done. Just now they use forums instead of smoky exclusive clubs to find new members, which is where law enforcement can get in.

I'd assume it was very similar to infiltrating other criminal gangs. You prove you're not a cop etc by demonstrating your willingness to commit the crime the gang carries out.

Saying you want to infiltrate the Darknet is like saying you want to infiltrate the Internet, the Postal system, or trucking. Maybe you can infiltrate one postal outlet in one country or a truck, but that's it.

To simplify it, think of a secure cell phone that only does encrypted email, messaging, etc. If you know someone with the same setup, you can agree to each configure your phones so you can securely communicate back and forth. But you still can't communicate with the other ten million phones with the same secure setup other than by finding their owners one at a time, gaining their trust, and repeating the process.

And that still won't help you with those using a different encryption program.

That's why the way that Oct and I suggested is the traditional way of doing it.
