Speed game
Myself and a few friends have been considering running a speed game recently. The principle behind this is that all players agree to finalise in five or fifteen minutes.
What we were wondering would be if it was possible to have that one game set at a fifteen minute phase length, to reduce reliance on people keeping to their prior agreement to finalise quickly. This could also be applied in the long term as an option when setting up a game.

Not a bug
Not going into a game in three days sends your nation into civil disorder, and this is fair.
However, you can have a problem if;
-in an autumn turn, you move and have no retreats
-have neither gained not lost supply centres
That's two 24hr periods during which you have no orders to give- and are reasonably unlikely to log in to that game. Say you are the first to finalise in the last autumn, that's up to 23hrs 59mins more.
Therefore, if you're late into finalising for the next spring, you go into civ dis, and your orders are automatically finalised.
So you end up in civil disorder without missing a single Diplomacy phase.

I've been hit by this a couple of times, and it's very annoying.

Update complete!
The update to 0.75 has been completed, but all orders made during the previous version have been wiped; if you submitted orders before this message was sent and the game they were for has not yet gone on to the next turn, you will need to make those orders again.

Changes:
- A new chat box that lets you talk in realtime
- A retreating unit can retreat to anywhere except where the displacing unit came from or where there has been a standoff
- New units can only be built in the supply centers within your country
- To own a supply center a unit must be occupying it during Autumn
- Some UI and internal enhancements

Greetings.
Hi. I'd just like to introduce six new phpDiplomacy players.
First, myself. A keen Open Source user, I was overjoyed to find a community project like this for one of my favourite games.
Then the others. firefairy91, ReapingStone, The Dark Lord, TheTyrant, and Lord Taeleon are all new to Diplomacy, but won't be easy pushovers; they're all keen and intelligent.
We are all from a forum about a book I'm writing, and there's a good chance even more users will me joining. So look forward to playing against at least six new and unique phpDiplomacy players!

Hectic 24hours
Long story short:
- I went to fix a bug and upload the files, but found a file I hadn't put there that turned out to be malicious
- I reported the malicious file, but for some reason there was a mix up and they thought I had put it there
- I had a discussion with an administrator and we eventually got it all resolved

Sorry about that, it should all be sorted out now *fingers crossed*

All process times have been increased 24 hours

player communications in a game?
another newbie question - how are game player messages replied & received during a game - do they go to the player's regular email? does the reply, if any, come from the player simply emailing a reply back?

Retreat bug; possibly Coasts
In the Vladivostijch game (id=192) my fleet has been forced to retreat from Bulgaria, where it was on the north coast.
Nothing happened in the unoccupied Rumania last turn, but I'm unable to retreat there.
Why is this?

Draws
Is there a way to mutually agree 2- or 3-way draws, as in conventional diplomacy? Obviously by negotiation, but I don't think the game can currently be forced to end in a draw even if all parties agree...

apparent illegal move
In the game titled "Entropy", the board indicates the movement of a French fleet from Spain directly to North Africa--a move that is not possible. How might this error be rectified?

This is an bug with the borders which Jiel pointed out to me, and which has been fixed in 0.75
SaintVincent (188 D)

Additionally, France has been allowed to build an army despite occupying only three supply centers at the end of the Autumn 1901 cycle. The army (erroneously described in a previous post as a fleet) that made the move from Spain to North Africa occupied Spain only in the Spring cycle.

Are there no remedies for such errors? I expect that some players, aware of the "bugs", will exploit them.
SaintVincent (188 D)

And having now seen in much detail previous references to the same issues, I withdraw the question. I am also considering withdrawal from all current games, as the game we are playing is not Diplomacy.
BlueWolf (100 D)

I don't think that the bugs are any reason to quit playing. Seeing as we aren't yet in version 1.0, it's generally assumed that flaws and errors are going to be inevitable. Granted, there are a few rules that are yet to be properly implemented and that have been exploited, but it won't be possible to find and amend the problems if everyone stopped playing.
Chrispminis (916 D)
27 Dec 06 UTC
Obviously there are some bugs, but it doesn't ruin the game, since good diplomacy will always beat good tactics. Just think of the current ruleset as a variation :P.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))

A Diplomacy adjudicator isn't a trivial thing to write SaintVincent, and as I've said in the FAQ and as other people have said we're not up to 1.0 yet and so you shouldn't expect everything to be complete.

That having been said 0.75 will address all of the most commonly brought up adjudicator bugs, moving the adjudicator that much closer to 1.0, and 0.75 is pretty near completion.
SaintVincent (188 D)
27 Dec 06 UTC
I would not claim that an adjudicator is simple to construct. The bugs, however, confer distinct advantages to some countries. I have no wish to benefit from same, nor do I wish my position to be compromised because of them.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
27 Dec 06 UTC
Well feel free to leave and perhaps come back when the adjudicator is satisfactorily complete. I'll put a notice on the registration page telling people about the adjudicators shortcomings so this won't happen again.

It is a bit of a chicken and egg problem that I don't want to spend too much time writing a complete adjudicator when no-one uses phpDiplomacy, but people might not use phpDiplomacy if it has an incomplete adjudicator. That's why I thank the pre-1.0 community for playing, offering suggestions, and putting up with the bugs and shortcomings while it's being worked on.
Chrispminis (916 D)

Diplomacy is not a perfect game anyways, in the official version, there is an imbalance in country strength anyways. This is counteracted by diplomacy, since people will fear stronger countries, and know that it has a better chance of winning.

Counter any inherent advantages with appropriate penalizing diplomacy.
SaintVincent (188 D)
27 Dec 06 UTC
I accept the role of playtester. Thank you for clarifying the situation; I believe that "up-front" notice will be well-received by the community.

I expect that when a reliable adjudicator is completed, players will visit the site in greater numbers that we see currently.

Thank you (all) for your thoughtful, considerate responses.
SaintVincent (188 D)

I should also suggest that if finalized orders are not submitted by the deadline, the current updated orders should be considered official. [In other words, the "working copy" should be considered official until changed.] Civil disorder will be reduced, and those who are awaiting diplomatic responses that do not arrive in time can still act.
Chrispminis (916 D)
29 Dec 06 UTC
That's a very good idea, and I've often had to finalize my orders very defensively to cover my butt in he face of ambiguous circumstances, and no time for response from other players.

Putting a game already in progress on phpDiplomacy?
I am involved in an offline game already in progress, which we want to move online. Is there a way for me to set up a game here and place the pieces as they are in our offline game? This would also involve assigning countries to particular players.

Thanks for the help.

Bug?
I recently gave a fleet orders to move to Bulgaria from the Aegean and instead it moved to Greece. I'll grant there is a 5 percent chance I gave mistaken orders, but I'm pretty sure I didn't. Has anyone else experienced this sort of fluke?

Basic Help Please
Hi I am totally new to Diplomacy and this site.

I am thinking of using this game for an english oral comm. class i teach but have a few questions: -

1) is it ok to use it in a classroom with up to 30 students? i.e copyright issues etc?
2) How do players negotiate with each other? by e-mail, in-game chat?
3) are the games played 'live' under time limits or does each player email other players their moves?
4) if it is 'live' could i create a passworded game that only my students could enter and play each other?

Many thanks for anyone who can give me some advice on this!

My Apologies
I want to apologize to everyone from being away from my games over the past several days. I recently moved back into my college dorm and my internet connection is not working. However, I'm going to log back on everyday, as I think I have found a computer on the campus that'll give me access.

I'm sorry about the problem.

1930!
Has anyone ever played this game?
The author claims it is based around his passion for Diplomacy, but with the aspects of air power and political power as a game function. It's certainly on an map very similar to the standard Diplomacy map.
However, it uses dice to select political power at the end of a turn, or so I believe. This would seem to me to lose the essential beauty of a purely skill based game, but I hope someone can prove me wrong there.
Anyway, the website for it is;
