Speed game
Myself and a few friends have been considering running a speed game recently. The principle behind this is that all players agree to finalise in five or fifteen minutes.
What we were wondering would be if it was possible to have that one game set at a fifteen minute phase length, to reduce reliance on people keeping to their prior agreement to finalise quickly. This could also be applied in the long term as an option when setting up a game.

Not a bug
Not going into a game in three days sends your nation into civil disorder, and this is fair.
However, you can have a problem if;
-in an autumn turn, you move and have no retreats
-have neither gained not lost supply centres
That's two 24hr periods during which you have no orders to give- and are reasonably unlikely to log in to that game. Say you are the first to finalise in the last autumn, that's up to 23hrs 59mins more.
Therefore, if you're late into finalising for the next spring, you go into civ dis, and your orders are automatically finalised.
So you end up in civil disorder without missing a single Diplomacy phase.

I've been hit by this a couple of times, and it's very annoying.

Update complete!
The update to 0.75 has been completed, but all orders made during the previous version have been wiped; if you submitted orders before this message was sent and the game they were for has not yet gone on to the next turn, you will need to make those orders again.

Changes:
- A new chat box that lets you talk in realtime
- A retreating unit can retreat to anywhere except where the displacing unit came from or where there has been a standoff
- New units can only be built in the supply centers within your country
- To own a supply center a unit must be occupying it during Autumn
- Some UI and internal enhancements

I'm not sure why my last hosting suddenly went downhill, but it looks like the move happened just in time. Hopefully this new host will do better.

The database has been restored to the way it was about a week ago, the last backup I took before I left, and before the crash happened which ruined all the games.

0.75 has a lot of untested code so expect bugs etc (but hopefully now bugs won't be as serious), I won't post the new release to sourceforge or e-mail everyone until I've given it a little while to see which bugs are found

I've disabled people going into civil disorder, because there are still problems with the old host, and it may be a while until everyone syncs with phpdiplomacy.net instead of phpdiplomacy.kuliukas.com

Oh no! I was going to use the North Africa to Spain with an army this turn O_o but its fixed : | Ah well, I'm just wondering, can you support convoys yet?

"Any chance of getting view history back?"
Yes, it'll be back

"What are those coloured dots next to the countries names, on top of the game page?"
Grey means the user isn't online, yellow means the user was online in the last few minutes, and green means the user is currently online and may be able to chat in realtime with you

"Ah well, I'm just wondering, can you support convoys yet?"
Nope, convoys are probably the biggest problem with the adjudicator at the moment, and they'll take quite a bit of work to get them working properly.

Hooray for the improved rules, they were making the game noticably different from the "official" diplomacy rules.
Chrispminis (916 D)

:S lol I was hoping you were going to say yes and went ahead and supported a convoy =\ Needless to say I failed... and with 2 support as well lol.

I also just realized there's no message to everyone option... which I liked a bit, so is there any chance we could get it back? It's pretty useful.
SaintVincent (188 D)

The adjudicator claims that mutual supports will fail, whereas units supporting each other are considered to be holding position. [In other words, an A Kie S A Den and A Den S A Kie should be considered legitimate.]
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
13 Jan 07 UTC
Chrispminis; yeah I will add a chatbox between all players in the next version

SaintVincent: Ah yes, I haven't implemented that yet. Is that only one case or does it also apply for A Foo S A Bar, A Bar S A Laa, A Laa S A Foo ?
Could you point this rule out to me in a rulebook, I can't see it in http://phpdiplomacy.net/doc/Rulebook.pdf

Hmm I don't see where it says that two units can support hold each other :/
opripom (2853 D)
13 Jan 07 UTC
"A unit may only support the defense of a unit in an adjacent province to which it could itself move. The unit receiving the support may not be ordered to move. That is to say, the receiving unit must be holding, supporting, or convoying (more on that later). Supporting the defense of a unit that has issued a move order has no effect. "
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
13 Jan 07 UTC
ahh, okay. Thanks
SaintVincent (188 D)
13 Jan 07 UTC
The three-way ("ring") support that you proposed (between Foo, Bar, and Laa) would also work, although no single unit would have more than one support (plus its own resistance).

Question: you can only create new armies in your homelands.

What happens when you capture more then 3 supply centers in 2 turns? And if one or more of your homelands are captured, can you create armies elsewhere?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
15 Jan 07 UTC
If that happens, you have to wait until next creation to make some of your forces!
dangermouse (5551 D)
29 Jan 07 UTC
Nope, only Russia can create more than 3 units in one year. (Those lucky bastards). On the other hand, if you are faced with this problem I don't think you can complain much...you've got to be close to winning. :)

Greetings.
Hi. I'd just like to introduce six new phpDiplomacy players.
First, myself. A keen Open Source user, I was overjoyed to find a community project like this for one of my favourite games.
Then the others. firefairy91, ReapingStone, The Dark Lord, TheTyrant, and Lord Taeleon are all new to Diplomacy, but won't be easy pushovers; they're all keen and intelligent.
We are all from a forum about a book I'm writing, and there's a good chance even more users will me joining. So look forward to playing against at least six new and unique phpDiplomacy players!

Hectic 24hours
Long story short:
- I went to fix a bug and upload the files, but found a file I hadn't put there that turned out to be malicious
- I reported the malicious file, but for some reason there was a mix up and they thought I had put it there
- I had a discussion with an administrator and we eventually got it all resolved

Sorry about that, it should all be sorted out now *fingers crossed*

All process times have been increased 24 hours

player communications in a game?
another newbie question - how are game player messages replied & received during a game - do they go to the player's regular email? does the reply, if any, come from the player simply emailing a reply back?

Retreat bug; possibly Coasts
In the Vladivostijch game (id=192) my fleet has been forced to retreat from Bulgaria, where it was on the north coast.
Nothing happened in the unoccupied Rumania last turn, but I'm unable to retreat there.
Why is this?

Draws
Is there a way to mutually agree 2- or 3-way draws, as in conventional diplomacy? Obviously by negotiation, but I don't think the game can currently be forced to end in a draw even if all parties agree...

Putting a game already in progress on phpDiplomacy?
I am involved in an offline game already in progress, which we want to move online. Is there a way for me to set up a game here and place the pieces as they are in our offline game? This would also involve assigning countries to particular players.

Thanks for the help.

Bug?
I recently gave a fleet orders to move to Bulgaria from the Aegean and instead it moved to Greece. I'll grant there is a 5 percent chance I gave mistaken orders, but I'm pretty sure I didn't. Has anyone else experienced this sort of fluke?

Basic Help Please
Hi I am totally new to Diplomacy and this site.

I am thinking of using this game for an english oral comm. class i teach but have a few questions: -

1) is it ok to use it in a classroom with up to 30 students? i.e copyright issues etc?
2) How do players negotiate with each other? by e-mail, in-game chat?
3) are the games played 'live' under time limits or does each player email other players their moves?
4) if it is 'live' could i create a passworded game that only my students could enter and play each other?

Many thanks for anyone who can give me some advice on this!

My Apologies
I want to apologize to everyone from being away from my games over the past several days. I recently moved back into my college dorm and my internet connection is not working. However, I'm going to log back on everyday, as I think I have found a computer on the campus that'll give me access.

I'm sorry about the problem.

1930!
Has anyone ever played this game?
The author claims it is based around his passion for Diplomacy, but with the aspects of air power and political power as a game function. It's certainly on an map very similar to the standard Diplomacy map.
However, it uses dice to select political power at the end of a turn, or so I believe. This would seem to me to lose the essential beauty of a purely skill based game, but I hope someone can prove me wrong there.
Anyway, the website for it is;
