Game Pause
I'm running a private game with some friends (http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=94862), and one just found out he doesn't have wifi at the hotel he'll be staying in for a day or two. Everyone, except the guy who has no internet, has issues a pause vote. He can't issue one, because he can't access the site. Could a mod please help here?

Tell me. Write me a PM. Tell me in a post. I make myself a large enough target I can--and have to--take it. I have no problem with that. (However, creating a thread about me and telling me not to bother post or pay heed while your congregation evaluates me as a poster and person and shares how much of a prick you all think I am with others while claiming *I* am the one without class...and worse--if you're going to call me shit, at least "say it to my face," as it were.

Reducing Resigns
Would it be possible to create a system that allows for the creator of a new game to but a max resign percentage required to join the game? I have no idea how hard it would be to code, but I'm just thinking allowed. It could be an advanced option, with the default having no limit. Another idea could be to add in a penalty for resigns (in advanced options). Any thoughts?

All righty then.

I used to dislike resigns but now treat them as just another variant to overcome. As they are quite random sometimes it adds to the game IMHO.

Though I'm a bit new here, and you'll probably all shout me down as a troll or a resigner (yes, 29%, don’t bother checking), and you evidently love talking about this, it is probably necessary to have a bit of moderation here. These penalties, if severe, would probably be a bit of a pain for those of us who form the majority of the site (the 99%), who occasionally play casually, don't really take games as seriously (not saying this is a legitimate excuse, but I don’t think the majority of people are such purists about not carrying on games after resigns), and are not inclined think about diplomacy when making plans about going away. With some of these ideas, it would take me about a year to get my percentage down low enough to be able to play two games again. As a casual player, personally, I don’t think I’d bother.
Jamiet99uk (848 D)

@ SFZ you do realise if you're going away you can request a pause, right?

I know of a lot of great players that had resigns on their account from when they started and didn't understand the game mechanics and how resignations are taboo. Their resigns can be well over a year ago.
If something like this was to take place (and I'm against it, for the record), I'd prefer that we had a system that made resigns go away after a certain amount of time. We all have emergencies that can take us away from the game. We all have lives that can cause us real trouble... the last thing I want it someone in the middle of a life tragedy to worry about logging into webdip because he won't be able to play in a lot of games for the rest of this sites life because he'll have a resign on his record...

Most people that love this idea never had a resign. You need to hear the opinions of those that have resigns for legitimate reasons.

And, no, I don't want to add more mod work for us to rule on which resigns are legit and which aren't. I'd rather they slowly go away over time...

@SFZ - Or you can get a sitter.

The fact is, this is a community. You may not consider it one worthy of your respect, but it is a community and we do respect each other. The 1% if you so want to call it that (I would venture to say more like 35% or more of the active membership) respect each other at least enough to not CD if avoidable and to not enter into games we know we A) don't have the time to play if live or B) plan to abandon after just a few turns to take a vacation. We have made a few (alot actually) of converts to the "NMRing and CDing is disrespectful" community over the last few years. A couple of prominent ones who had your attitiude but realized that they were getting left out of invited and becoming despised by the community as a whole.

Think of this as the public pool. A handful of people are there everyday and hangout and enjoy the sun and the fun. And then along comes the guy who doesn't shower first, let's his toddlers pees in the pool, repeatedly does cannonballs off the high dive, and lets his baby take a deuce in it just before leaving. He does this at indiscriminate times during the month. And yet he wonders why people give him nasty looks everytime he shows up after a while.

That guy is the chronic CDer.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
17 Jul 12 UTC
@FK, if you think the opinion of the casual CDer is being left out here, find one and tell them to post. I have a soft spot for certain rules that I've broken in the past and gotten away with because of my own ignorance, but I've never resigned. I've CD'd before and then come back to it. Yes, sometimes things happen, but it stalls a game for six other people when it happens too.

I like the "fade with time" approach. It shows a form of redemption can happen. So, if we instituted the reliability rating from VDip, we could set the reliability hit at 10% per CD but then return 1% a month. CD twice and it takes 20 months to return to full. We coudl alos provide a tredning or "last CD" date to show how long it has been since they CDed. then, if they had a several early on, they could still point to the "I haven't CDed in over a year" number. I wish I knew PHP better and had some time cause it could be as simple as tracking when the last CD was and adding a game creation option that allows the creator to specify how recently the last CDed occured and restrict someone who cDed in the last N months from joining.

I think that SFZ has a point. I consider myself a serious player- and I can usually find time to log in and check my games once a day no matter what is going on- but I don't want the site to suffer as a whole. I think the site should try to cater to both dedicated, experienced players; and novices who are just trying the game out.

I think the site already has several procedures in place to do this. We can make games higher buy in. We can change the phase length around. We can invite players we have enjoyed playing with in the past to a passworded game. All of these things help insluate the community of dedicated players from the casual gamer.

To achieve some kind of parity between the two kinds of players mentioned above I believe we shouldn't make the penalty for CDing so severe that it discourages novice players. And should make sure that it is relativily easy to recover from if a concerted effort is given on the part of the reformed CDer.
Draugnar (0 DX)

@erik - You shoudl check out VDiplomacy.com (our sister site). They have a reliability rating and the ability to make games with a minimum reliability rating required to join. Your RR goes down whewn you CD or NMR and goes up when you take over abandoned positions. So you can CD then take over two abandoned positions and still be at 100%.

That sounds like a good system to me. I agree with bo_sox that would help make games more recoverable if a player nmrd or cdd
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Jul 12 UTC
IIRC, it's 100% - NMR% - (10% * CDs) + (5% times takeovers).

So two CDs in 100 game turns = 4 NMRs (or 4%) loss plus 20% for the actual CDs bringin one down to 76% reliability. If it was only 20 game turns, then the NMRs would be 20% not 4%, making ythe reliability only 60%. then add back in the takeover ROI. :-)

Can we please just Ban people with a high resign ratio. Evidence A gameID=94908

The most acceptable was the person with a resign ratio of 6%. But there were others 2 x 10 %, one 20 %, one 26 % and one with a ratio of 39!!!!%. And ofcourse mister 39% had to be an nice little Italy next to my precious Austria and his only strategical idea was to attack Austia and Attack Austria and maybe even attack Austria.

If it was up to me, such morons may be trown from this site because they spoil it for everybody. Do you think they return with other emailadresses? I think thats to much of an effort for such people to do more than twice. Enough other sites.

Public Press Game - call for players
I rarely play public press, but I am hoping to bring in some players that I haven't yet had the pleasure (that I can remember) of lining up against. The only criteria, and sole reason for the public press, is that you must lob insults or banter w/ allies and foes alike. Thus, I'd like to personally invite Nigee and Zultar along w/ 4 other random persons that would be interested.

Team game on Vdip. Grab a buddy and join.
There is a two player team game starting soon. Only a few spots left. Grab a friend and come join and see if you can win with a teammate. This is not meta gaming at all. It is being allowed to have two friends join and play as a team. Stated so in the rules and on the forum on Vdip. So if you like playing with a teammate and would like to play a game for sure to be allies and no issues of complaints. Join: http://www.vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=8986

WTA vs PPSC
A frequent debate on this site. I'm of the WTA camp as I disdain the "strong second" PPSC mentality.
It seems that the inventor of the game, Allan Calhamer shared this view, arguing that the WTA objective provided for much more interesting end game drama.
