The Ancient Mediterranean variant should be taken off this site !
It's way too unbalanced & unfair -
so easy to have 2 vs 1 gang-ups in which there is absolutely no way out of.

Mods please unpause New Game-41
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=79818

This game was paused all weekend with the public understanding that it would need to remain paused until roughly 24 hours (one order phase) ago now. Two players, Russia and France, have each logged on in the last seven hours and neither one has voted to unpause. Please help.

How do I join a game?
I've tried joining games, but when I put in my user password it says it's wrong. The password lets me log into the website but not individual games. Am I using the wrong password?

OK...I Have To Know..."The Hunger Games?" Really? ...WHY?
This book has been getting acclaim for a while now, and that's usual for a lot of aimed-at-young-adult books series...

But now I hear some of my fellow Poly Sci and English majors and even a couple professors professing the merits of the work? ...Has anyone read this? Can someone tell me why (or what you think of it?)

Going from draws to wins
I may be overestimating my capabilities, but I like to think I'm pretty good at the opening phases of the game. I think I have a pretty good sense of tactical possibilities, and at least adequate diploming skills. So I find myself being cut in on a lot of draws. But the next step, going from inclusion in a draw to wins, is one that seems to escape me. So, I'm wondering what people who get a high percentage of wins are doing to get them.
I'm actually in a similar situation. I mostly play gunboats and am pretty good at avoiding death and getting into draws... But it's been a while since I've gotten a staight-up win and I'm wondering if I need to change my play style a bit to be less defensive and take more chances.

Usually a well timed stabbed will push you towards 16 or 17 centers, and then you just have to do your best to cross the stalemate line. However, I only win every once in a while, so take my advice with a grain of salt, I suppose.

One big thing is that if you are winning you want to keep all 7 players in the game as long as possible. Once a game gets down to 3 or 4 people it is almost impossible to win.

I feel like jumping out to a lead can also be a hindrance, as everyone stops fighting each other and just goes to fight you. So I think sometimes you need to play for position as opposed to supply centers, instead of taking 1-2SC's in a turn, position your units such that you can still definitely take them the following year, but such that it gives the appearance of stumbling/not running away with the game.

from my perspective, is to play as conservatively as possible throughout the game. i am sure it can annoy players who think that what can be wrapped up in two or three turns may take two or three years longer, but particularly in the late stage of the game, i am very cautious about the possibilities that i am overlooking - i always assume that the other side will include everyone, and that they will make the best possible moves.

it is hard to be very conservative and cautious with your moves (ie, basically never leaving a move up to chance and never leaving open the possibility of losing an SC, unless you are tactically doing so) early in the game, but later in the game, i find myself with a lot of units supporting my front lines. some players might just unleash the fury but i choose to target each enemy kill...
First thang first: you need to know where your centers are coming from.

You want wins?

Play PPSC.
Play people who suck :)

Smart players will see solo opportunities coming a mile off.

They are all right, but being over-cautious will get you nowhere... yet, chances are just that chances... Alliances come and go & that is key, beyond feelinig out certain balances of power: keep an eye on the players that are better, even in Anon, one can single those out. And when you make a 'run for it', make sure you can get there!!!

You have to manipulate everything on the board. You need to understand who is allied, what alliances are the biggest threat to you, and how to get your allies into the weakest position possible while keeping them as allies. If you do all that there is normally at least 1 turn per game where you have a solo shot, where everything falls together and your opponents/allies have to leave themselves open to you. If you can figure out when and how to take that opportunity you will start winning more. And after looking at your last draw Bob (Gunboat - Please Keep It Classy-35) I would really advise you not to attack more then one person at a time. There was a point where you were attacking Russia and Italy at the same time. This is the biggest mistake I'm warning the players in the SoW games about. Also, don't take centers you can't hold like Berlin. It makes you look like too big of a threat and everyone will rally to stop you. Obviously there are a ton of ways to solo and everyone does it a bit differently, but I think what I said, specifically not attacking more then 1 person at a time would help you out.
What uclabb said is probably a key thing though. Though I haven't soloed in ages, I find that my solo runs gain better traction when there are more people in the game to oppose me. It makes it harder for everyone to coordinate moves and also will leave some people (if it looks like a draw) disgruntled and wanting to eliminate some others, which gives you more of an advantage
Just as a footnote, I didn't actually mean to attack Italy. I'd guessed he would try supporting himself into Naples from Apulia, and keep Ionian Sea, rather than vice versa. I was trying to give him some backfill to help him keep Naples after taking it back.
