Anyone for a summer game
Hello, as summer is coming I am finding myself reluctant to join in games as we often go away for the weekend with no internet access. Therefore I have a proposal:

Dropping the atom bomb
I haven't really discussed this since College and just taught it in my class. I was wondering peoples thoughts on whether or not the dropping of the bombs were justifiable or not. I have always had a hard time with this question, and would be interested in hearing some thoughts.

Game Search Filters Not Working
I'll test more but right now the most obvious is finished games -> won.
This filter is showing me games that were a mere survival (which would be fine) but its also showing me plenty of games where the player definitely lost.

I am so proud of the students at NKU.
When Westboro threatened to stage one of their protests at a local soldiers funeral, the students gathered strong enough to show them down. Of coursem the Westboro cowards didn't actually show, but still... Way to go NKU! You make us proud.

Best WD Games?
So. I like to go through the finished games and look to find the best games. Anyone have any particular games they really liked that I might be interested in? They can be games you were a part of, or just games you found at one point, like I do sometimes, that you thought were really good, or very interesting.

Thanks.

This one is probably my favorite still: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4033

My (France) relationship with England was relatively interesting. We tried the Hey Bresto!, but I freaked out and kicked England out, then England got the upperhand on me and we tried it again, after some serious "begging" on my part, did well together, then England stabbed me at the exact moment I decided to knock Italy down which allowed me one more build than England expected and could have been the key to me pulling out the victory. Also, Spring 1903 is the game board you see if you go to webdip without being logged into your account, it was a pretty cool looking board that phase, lots of good stuff going on.

Another reason I really liked that game was because I had won the first nine games I joined on webdip, and this was the tenth game I joined, which I really wanted to win for a double-digit streak, especially since I got pounded in the 11th and 12th games I joined (long before this game came to a close).

My favorite was a game with IvoIvanoff. Though I have some memory loss about it, I was germany and he was france. We'd played a few games and I knew he could play and was trustworty. Seens to me we stopped the English and the Russians were heading south and vulnerable. I moved to ber, sil and both and then further east just as he moved through me like a hot knife through my butter back. He didn't even buy me dinner first. I think I was one in two years. Great game though. The scond best was a win as Italy where I was a 4 until 08 or so and then clipped Aus and Turkey and even france through timing and much luck.
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=56990#gamePanel

I was russia yesterday, i had just been beaten at the outset of 2 live games (one i pulled off a 1 unit draw) and it looked like it was going to happen a third time. By spring 1906 i only had 3 units, and Italy, Turkey and Germany were fighting while france was extinguishing England and gearing up for a solo. What happened next was a race to Berlin.
it was gunboat live also btw

One last tangent, that game was the highest pot game in the history of the site at the time, so it was pretty intense, mr.crispy, as I recall.

There is a game where a player (figlesquidge, I believe) came back to win after being down to only 1 SC. I can't seem to find it though. Maybe someone else has the link?

I think the best game I have ever been in was this one:
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=15117#gamePanel

It went to 1929, everyone had their moment in the sun and alliances were always shifting, I as England was once down to just three centers and only two home ones with two Franch units on my mainland and ended up coming back to have a solo in the bag. But the kicker of it all was davebishops brilliant play as a small power to force himself into the draw. He duped me badly and turned my solo into a four way draw. I did not take it well, but I learned a lot. :)
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

If you search far enough, there were some really funny games. A few of them involved the winner (person to reach 18 centers) went into CD and the remainder of the countries drew the game and split the pot.

Another game had all 7 countries go into CD for 26 years (likely a passworded game) before conflict began.

A third game saw one guy playing England who had 17 centers and clearly could take 18 but chose not to. Instead the other players gave up and quit while he moved his units into position, forced units to disband and spent over 10 game years trying to take all 34 centers. At one point, he convoyed from St Pete to Armenia, failed on a return convoy, successfully convoyed back, and then returned to Armenia. He dicked around forever before finishing the game. Sad that it took him that long to do something so pointless.

This was my favorite I played in.

gameID=45852

A win as Austria is always fun. But to me, this came down to two excellent (pats self on back) diploming moves.

First, successfully playing Russia and Turkey off each other until I was able to dominate them both. I assisted each of them with the other at different times.

Secondly, never turning on France. I could have. I could have several times. England convinced France to turn on me in order to preserve his homeland integrity...and then just kept hitting France regardless. So France did the classic, "You know what? Screw you, I'll hand Austria the win then."
gameID=44321

This has since long been a favorite of mine. It was a live gunboat, I was England, and I tried something new. Moved into the channel in 1901, to try and create some offense against France (played by Barnett). He read me and Germany perfectly in fall 1901 leaving me with no builds.

In the entire game, I never had more than three units. Despite that, I did ended up in a three-way draw with Austria-Italy.

Maybe the game I am most proud of is this one:

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=20550#gamePanel

I was Austria and took a first turn stab from Italy. I convinced Turkey to prop me up, and eventually earned myself back a viable position and eventually soloed.

Solo by anlari with 34sc's!!! All of them!

Probably one of the most impressive!

I forgot about that one where he managed to get everyone's units desbanded and with them having no home SCs to rebuild on. It was brilliant.

I remembered incorrectly. It was TheCzech (not figlesquidge) that came back from only 1 SC to win a WTA gunboat.
@uclabb: What I like most about that game (and I like a lot about it!), is the Turkish fleet in Black Sea convoying an Italian army from Rumania into Ankara in Spring 1919. How could that ever happen?
Also, +1 Troodonte.

-1 Draug and Troodonte, that was the most pathetic game I saw. I alluded to it in my post. he spent over half the game dicking around for no real purpose other than to have all the centers. It was a waste of time on his part and a bunch of retardedness by the other players who were clearly extremely sub-par.
yebellz (729 D(G))
25 Apr 11 UTC
@Tru Ninja, it was amusing nevertheless. The opposition was clearly subpar, so he had some fun with it. Convincing France to go along with the ruse was key, since he needed to give up some SCs in order to stay below 18. However, as an "accomplishment", it was meaningless.

That game did uncover what seemed to be a couple of bugs. He wasn't able to convoy from Syria to StP for some weird reason (although he was able to convoy it back to StP in two hops, stopping in Clyde). Also, the order history is all messed up since he was the only one entering orders for several years.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
25 Apr 11 UTC
I agree. I thought it was weird that he didnt get the win when everyone else was defeated like it does when everyone else CD's

Games from the Leagues should never be looked at as stand-alone games. I damn near drew a game but decided to take the win in B1 Game 2 this season. The leagues are a metagame in and of themselves so you sometimes don't want the win, but to have the biggest SC count in a draw.
Troodonte (3379 D)
25 Apr 11 UTC
Pointless, yes...
But it reveals great skills by anlari anyway... no way to deny it.
It probably wouldn't happen with more skilled opponents, but still...it impresses me.
yebellz (729 D(G))
26 Apr 11 UTC
The players were active up until they were put in purgatory (no units + no home SCs). Also, I believe that players technically cannot CD when they have no orders to submit.
gigantor (404 D)
26 Apr 11 UTC
Keeping in mind, Tru Ninja, that with anlari being the only player entering orders, it wouldn't have taken as long as it seems. He wouldn't have needed to wait for phases to end, and hey, what's wrong with dicking around if you're having fun?
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
26 Apr 11 UTC
There's no problem with it, I just wouldn't rank it as one of the greatest games ever like some others have been doing. Who am I to spoil someone else's fun? Great games are the ones that go down in history as great stabs, excellent defenses that turn tides or big shockers that have you on the edge of your seat if you are playing in them.

Plus when I was saying that it took a long time, I wasn't indicating real-time, merely the 9 game years it took to complete.

MODs please help: need to pause a game ASAP
Hello, I am currently playing in "Ontario Diplomacy League Game 4". It is a game me and my friends set up and the first we have played on this site (for most of us). One of us just went camping for a week, and we only now realize that you have to pause the game unanimously for it to work. Since he has no access to a computer, we can't do that. Is it possible for someone to force pause it for us until May 4th? Thanks!

quick question
if two units move toward each other, the move is canceled. correct?
as in, if an army in munich moves to tyrolia, and an army in tyrolia moves to munich, then both unit simply bounce. in other words, they do not switch places.
