Would someone mind pointing out what happened here?
The FAQ states that if no disband orders are given, the unit in the territory first alphabetically gets disbanded (if all are equal distance from a home SC). Yet Germany's Prussian army was disbanded, rather than its unit in Prussia or Holland. Would someone mind explaining? (gameID=23767)
Byron Vickers (132 D)

The situation at the beginning of the most recent build phase was that all German home SCs were occupied (game ID=23767). Germany had to make a disband of one unit from the three he had in Prussia, Holland and Tyrolia.

Germany hasn't been submitting orders for a few turns (and has now left), and the FAQ seems quite clear on what would happen if Germany didn't submit: All units were equal distances from home SCs, so Holland would be disbanded, as it was first alphabetically.

Instead, the army in Prussia has been disbanded. It's clearly not the doing of Germany, since they've been ejected for inactivity. Can anyone explain why this has happened, given that it appears to contradict the FAQ?

It happens all the time, so you are right, it should be fixed or at least mentioned in the FAQ that there is a problem with this.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)

HOL is a center and IIRC centers take priority to non-center units. Distance to home comes second, alphabetical ordering is last.
Ursa (1617 D)

You forget Holland is a supply center. According to me supply centers fall out of the rule and then the alphabetical rule only involves 'empty' provinces. Then, in this case the rule is rightly adjusted, since Prussia comes before Tyrolia in the alphabet.

What Ivo said, only in bad english.

Yes, disbands actually work like this:

1. Units in non-SC territories will disband first, in alphabetical order.
2. Units in SC territories outwith the country's home SCs are next.

Has this been fixed since a couple of months ago? It was my last observation that the unit most recently created was killed off, which has often meant that units in home centers die first.

The official rules state "If a country in civil disorder has to remove units, the units farthest from the country are removed first. If units are equally distant, then remove Fleets before Armies and the in alphabetical order by the provinces in which they are located."

Avalon Hill 4th Edition rules, 2000.

Honestly, this should be the single highest priority on the bug list...

I've seen errors with this adjudicated as well. IIRC, a fleet in North Sea was disbanded before a fleet in MAO. Not a big deal, but it should definitely be fixed.

Anything that varies from Avalon hills official rules regarding Adjudication and from the DATC would be first on my list to fix. If only I had some time to help.

You certainly have a lot of time to write in the forum :)

P.S. There's something about your style that always makes me want to respond and tease you. Sorry about this, just fooling around :)

I was in a game where Russia was in civil disorder and their army in Moscow was disbanded before their fleet in Black Sea. This was a couple of weeks ago.

My understanding of how this works within the webdiplomacy engine is that when the variant (or classic) is first setup, the engine creates a table for each country giving a numerical value for the order in which things should be disbanded. There are a couple of bugs in that logic so the current table is completely hosed. It appears this came about when variants were introduced.

There is a somewhat long post discussing this issue on the dev board under the bug section.

The disband code had an error.
Solution is posted on the dev-forum and waiting for integration on the live code here...
kestasjk is busy at the moment, so it still might take some time

No problem, Ivo. I post while builds and tests are running in 5 minute bursts.
Draugnar (0 DX)

That idea is fine except the rules make it clear that, if equidistant from the country, Fleets are always disbanded before Armies regardless of province.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Draug, I haven't looked at the code as I'm not php fluent yet, but I think the table includes the unit type. So it should have all fleets that are 2 spaces away from a home center before all armies that are 2 spaces away and then both of those are sorted by alphabet of course.

Then, when it is time to find which unit to disband it looks up each existing unit by territory and unit type and then disbands the one with the highest or lowest value, whichever way it is.

Again, I haven't looked at the code, this is just my understanding. The current problem is simply that the table of values has bad values so which unit is disbanded appears random when in fact it is just wrong.
Sleepcap (100 D)
23 Apr 10 UTC
It's not the tables, that have false data, it's just a missing querry for the variant ID. So it mixes the destroy-index from all variants together. For a better explanation take a look at the dev forums.

Gotcha. That makes more sense and takes a lot of work off of the server at adjudication time on the build phase.
JECE (1248 D)

The weird thing is that this used to work fine.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
27 Apr 10 UTC
Yep sorry about this, it has been working wrong since the new variants code which generates the table on the fly rather than using a pre-generated table. Sleepcap found the problems and we've patched them in the latest code

I do still need to regenerate the table which contains the invalid data, but I'm waiting for the server to hit a lull because I'll need to take the server offline to do it and it doesn't occur very often. When ~40-50 people are online I'll fix this problem, that's the usual daily low last I checked

Around the NFL- Post NFL Draft Day One Talk
Did the Rams make the right move signing Sam Bradford? Between the first three picks, Bradford, Nuh, or Gerald McCoy, who'll have the best career? What do you think of the Broncos drafting Tim Tebow? What craziness has Al Davis done THIS time, and by drafting two huge OL to protect now-consistent Smith, with the 49ers win a now-depleted NFC West? And between Santonio Holmes and Big Ben, WHAT is up with the Steelers' players getting busted (and will Big Ben be gone?)

Few things are quite as frustrating as making mistakes in this game.
Maybe I just take games too seriously, but when I make mistakes--serious, fatal mistakes--I can't help but be hard on myself. What do you do to blow off steam when you've blown your shot at victory?

"Theme Songs" For Nations
We have our national anthems, all beautiful and regal and full of pride... but what about a "theme song" for the nation? Said it before and I'll say it again, Englishmen- you NEED to make "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" your National Theme Song already! When I think France now, I just always hear "Do You Hear The People Sing?" instead of their national anthem (that or hundreds of artists screaming "We surrender!" ;) Theme Song, nation... go!
