While this is technically true, its not quite the feat it appears due to medal inflation. The TOTAL # of medals in the Olympics has increased almost 50% in the last 5 Olympics. The total count of medals for the last 5 - 183, 205, 234, 252, 258. Its like comparing box office receipts between Titanic and Gone With The Wind.

Gold medals are only a big deal if you when them. If you don't win one, then it's no big deal, right? At least that's what I think whenever I lose a game of Diplomacy.

Good point, Dingleberry. It would be interesting to see the percentage of medals won by individual countries over the years.

Kaptin, while I realize that living in American Jr makes it so you rarely have anything to be patriotic about, please realize I was not denying the fact that Canada won the most golds in this Olympics, just that the feat of the World Record isn't as much as a big deal.

@DingleberryJones - whereas the number of medals is going up, the number of countries participating is also rising (at a faster rate - 55%). In addition the money invested into athletes is also rising at a staggering rate.

Also you have to realize that for a country of Canada's size to beat the countries we beat is phenomenal.

Newly participating countries tend to send a few athletes.

As for comparing population, Canadians are born with skates on their feet. There's a reason the NHL has so many Canadians. They are good at hockey, because that's the national sport. The fact that they beat the US, whose children grow up playing baseball, football and basketball in the schoolyard is not really surprising. most US kids don't have a local skating pond.

And the fact that they beat India or Nigeria? Hmmm..... Not too sure what an accomplishment that is.

There has always been lame duck countries in the olympics. Now there are many countries who specialize at certain sports (e.g. S.Korea - speed/figure skating). In addition, the amount of funding that American athletes get eclipses Canadian funding.

My point with S.Korea is that it is incredible difficult to be very good at a wide variety of sports, and obviously the U.S. is still the best at it, but Canada had a remarkable triumph with the Gold Medals.
