Any way to delete my old account?
I accidentally made two accounts - Moltke and Acosmist. I want to get rid of Moltke (with which I haven't played any games). Is there any way to do this?

World Series of Diplomacy?
I know! Sounds interesting, doesn't it? Interesting enough to read this thread?
zscheck (2531 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
So I have been thinking, there should be a tournament style championship. I know there of a number of "leagues" out there, and by no means am I trying to discredit them in anyway (I am in 2 of them). But what if we could get one united tournament to determine the the world best diplomat.
I basically opened to say, please give some feedback on this. is it a good idea to you guys? would a lot of people join this tourney?
If i get enough response from you guys, i will have no problem organizing it all
hellalt (24 D)

what would be awesome would be an initial knock out phase with top 210 players participating. preliminary round 30 games. 30 winners and the 19 best runners up continue to the second knock out round that consists of 7 games.
the 7 winners enter the second phase of the championship which can be league style. 7 players in 7 games.
to sum it up:
1st phase (knock out) 210 players/30 games
2nd phase (knock out) 49 players (30 winners + 19 runners up)/7 games
3rd phase (league) 7 players/7 games
Lummis (100 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
Why not play more games per round, the first 49 to win 2, and then then best 7 with the first three wins from that, and finally, the big winner the first to get four wins in the final round?!
flashman (2274 D(G))
17 Jul 09 UTC
The idea of first to win a fixed number of games is intriguing: it would certainly get rid of a lot of the 'draw as soon as we have eliminated one or two players' mentality.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
hellalt: Do you have any idea how long that would take? It wouldn't finish for 2-3 years if you had the games sufficiently staggered that people could feasibly play.

zscheck, can you tell me how this would be different from the GFDT?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
Sounds very much the same to me, and I had a suggestion about that - why not start the GFDT rather earlier such that we get it finishing at easter rather than still going mid-summer!?
vamosrammstein (757 D(B))
17 Jul 09 UTC
If you have to wait for people to win a set number of games, wouldn't everybody just kill whoever was getting close to winning the tournament? Similar to how winning a game in the leagues it suicide because it makes you such a target.
thewonderllama (100 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
I am planning on starting the next GFDT earlier for that very reason, fig. But can't start it until we finish the current one. :)
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
llama, May I ask why you can't?
thewonderllama (100 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
Biggest one would be that many of the folks still left in the GFDT are also in the Leagues and that means that most people have 4 games right there.

Once we get to the final round, which will take likely another week or two, that will drop to one game that 7 people are playing plus whatever is left of their League games, at which point it become more reasonable, so it isn't strictly a matter of can't start it.

That said though, I'd like to give folks a break between the two tournaments, especially considering that I imagine the Champions Cup will be starting not too long after GFDT completes. Frankly, if the next GFDT starts early to mid September we should be in much better shape for next year.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
Yes, but I would be surprised if we were done by that point, is all.

I can be relatively free with the timing of the Champions' Trophy.
EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))
17 Jul 09 UTC
Your viewpoint appears to be this site only, so it is not exactly a World Series.

There is currently the World Diplomacy National Cup. This is the closest thing to a World Series. Different sites bid to host this and National teams are formed and then play multiple rounds of play to create a top board.

What might be more appropriate to a World Series is to take each of the web sites and then have them prepare their best players, treating the site as a league unto themselves, and then forming a 7 player team from each web site and having those people then duke it out in a World Series.
This way the web site community (php/PlayDip/Stabbeurfou/AskiiJudge/DiploRed/Redshift etc) gets some publicity from their players and can tout 'The Home of the World Series Champion Team 2010".
Just an idea for you all to consider.

Xapi (194 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
Wow, that is one good idea!

But how would we choose wich seven to send?

G-R? Players in league A? The same players as the Masters?
EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))
17 Jul 09 UTC
I am not one of the top 7 players here, and my focus is on FtF for the next two years.
The real issue is whether the webmasters are interested in it, if they are then the players will follow.
ag7433 (927 D(S))
17 Jul 09 UTC
I like that idea Edi.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
I've been thinking of organising something like Edi suggested. I was thinking roughly along the lines of 7 players, 7 sites, and then one game hosted on each site.
vamosrammstein (757 D(B))
17 Jul 09 UTC
Could we please send Sicarius and Diplomat1824 to be on the same team?:]
Xapi (194 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
7 sites
7 players per site
7 games, with one player from each site, hosted by one site each.
A scoring system similar to the leagues.

Is this idea great or what?
Xapi (194 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC

More than 7 sites? Decide by number of active players.
vamosrammstein (757 D(B))
17 Jul 09 UTC
I think its an amazing idea, and I'd love to see it actually happen. We should definitely buy a trophy if we win it too:]

playdiplomacy
WorldLeaderstheGame
DipBounced
Stabberfou
facebookdiplomacy
Diplomacy2000

Does FBDip have a community different enough from this one as to participate on it's own in something like this?
vamosrammstein (757 D(B))
17 Jul 09 UTC
Yea wasn't facebook diplomacy just moving over here because we're better than everyone else?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
Yeah, facebook dip probably shouldn't be counted unless we are short of sites to play
hellalt (24 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
the six last sites just suck
Chrispminis (916 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
I'd help organize such a tournament. I would imagine we'd take the best 7 players by Ghost Rating that are willing to play from this site. The other sites can decide their own.

Facebook Dip has a different community. Several players have come over here to play, but I think we still are largely different communities. If any of the crossover players want to represent Facebook Dip I think that's OK as well.
Julien (2065 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
well I don't agree: FB diplo has a different community than here, there are broadly half the number of active players than you can find here, but the seven top players are all very good.
zscheck (2531 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
i like the idea also.

and as to my original would have been a site-wide, bracket style tournament, if that helps anybody out
my original idea was to pair up 2 games, where the top 4 from game A and the top 3 from game B (game A would probably be the harder of the two). you could continue that trend all the way to the championship. i also thought of pairing up 3 games, so it would be 3 from game A and 2 from games B and C advancing to the next round. it just depends on how many people we would have playing.
Xapi (194 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
I think the current tournaments and leagues in this site are more than enough.
EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))
18 Jul 09 UTC
If you have someone who wants to organize it, then fine that is great,
I will contribute an article to the Pouch on the idea.
It does not have to be limited to 7 sites as you could have different multiples worked out. I believe that the last DWNC had 26 different country teams.

You should ideally have the consent and support of the owner of the web site who could pick the final team. However, it could simply be done without their involvement if he does not mind it being called the XYZ team.

There should be a team captain and back up *call it a Lieutenant and it does not have to be the top 7 players but maybe the 7 players with the highest ranking on the site that apply.

Who ever wants to carry the ball on this can write to me off forum and I will give you whatever support I can.

Asking for a pause in a no press game
I've been informed that a funeral which I need to attend is going to take place on Monday, so I'll be away for a couple of days. I'm in the middle of a no press game - is it reasonable to request a pause in global chat, or should I just go CD? I assume the former but I'm not sure of the etiquette.
