Is anybody else top of a league?
Having won our second game of the season, the cricket team I have recently become captain of is top of the league. So I was wondering - who else is top of a league (no matter how obscure!)?

Asian diplomats here?
I just wanted to know if there are any Asian diplomats here?
I am, for one... Korean, really.
For that matter, is anyone here from anywhere other than Europe and North America (which seems to be so much the norm for Diplomacy?)

Rules question
For disbands of a CD player - does the calculation of "distance from the nearest SC" refer to distance from any SC, or distance from the nearest *accessible* one? Example: a French fleet in Kiel. Is this 3 moves away (it takes 3 moves to go from Par->Kie), or 4 moves away (4 moves from Brest, since the fleet couldn't start in Par)?

Suppose A Bul>Con, supported by A Ank, which is in turn supported by A Arm. But A Con> Ank supported by A Smy. And finally F Aeg also is ordered to Con. Does A Con stay put, or is it dislodged?

Does the culture of this game encourage multi-accounting?
I was just thinking about that... the game teaches you to lie... and if you're a good enough liar.. well then you can also multi-account. Just a thought.

What do you do for a living?
I was a little curious when in another thread two people majored in international relations in college, does Diplomacy draw in more business/political/communications type occupations or majors than others? I'm semi along those lines- I'm majoring in exercise psychology. What about you?

question about convoys
For example lets say there is 2 islands. I have an army on Island 1 and a fleet between both of the islands. I want to get my army on to island 2, so do I need to move my ship to island 1 to get my guys or do I leave the fleet in the middle and my guys cross?

In this no press game england and germany repeatedly support move and support hold each other. How could they know where to do this without breaking the rules?
djbent (2572 D(S))
15 May 09 UTC
those are all pretty obvious supports. it doesn't really look suspicious at all.
mellvins059 (199 D)

look at Autumn 1902 where the german fleet in norway supported the english fleet to norway from the Norwegian sea while england also had a fleet in the north sea do you say that that was just a lucky guess?
mellvins059 (199 D)
15 May 09 UTC
also they are always both on at the same time
weird you think?
Chrispminis (916 D)

They're not multi accounters. I checked that. I can't check press at the moment, but I would say their moves are quite reasonable.

Germany's support hold of Norway is entirely superfluous and is clearly acting to just signal to England a willingness to co-operate. England's support for Germany into Belgium is easy to explain. Germany tried just a season earlier.
Germany's support for England into Norway was superfluous and probably good luck. I didn't check the full history, but I suspect there have been some failed supports.
mellvins059 (199 D)
15 May 09 UTC
actually i looked through the history and there is not one failed support as you say
djbent (2572 D(S))
15 May 09 UTC
england had tried for norway from norwegian twice before, it made sense that it would be the same, so germany supported it. the others are all obvious as that. plus, i don't know the english player, but have played with alderian and i don't think that he would do that.
mellvins059 (199 D)

okay it seemed a bit suspicious to me something you dont often see in a no press game
i would keep an eye on it though
Scotsh (278 D)

Yes, i admit.
Me and Germany are on the same account. I played over a dozen games with both accs whilst never using them in the same game. Now, in this low point gunboat game my genius mind saw the perfect opportunity to take advantage. Bummer... no all was for nothing.

part of the twist of no press/gunboat is showing your intentions through your moves. alliances can still be formed, it's common, and with the right set of moves you can alert your ally to your intended moves.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Its something you see in a lot of no press games.
Supporting people is the *only* way to persuade people to ally with and help you

I have played with scotsh before and I had no problems with him at all.
djbent (2572 D(S))
15 May 09 UTC
also, you should always check the order history, b/c failed supports (signals about intention) are not always obvious in the maps.

Always on at the same time is fishy though, from an outsider's perspective.

Combined with the psychic supports. Come on.....
djbent (2572 D(S))

how are the supports psychic? the most important ones, the move had already been tried.

I just try to send happy feelings, like arranging my units in a rainbow towards Germany. Or was that an arrow shape...
mapleleaf (0 DX)
16 May 09 UTC
Fair enough, djbent. Like I indicated, I have the outsider's perspective here. IF the supports are also psychic, it's fishy. If not, then my apologies to those involved.

Particularly good Gunboat players should be able to work in concert. It happens alot to stop leaders.
djbent (2572 D(S))
16 May 09 UTC
i agree maple, "psychic" supports are totally suspicious. but we have three supports in this game between england and germany - G supports E nwg-nwy after E has tried twice (not exactly genius), G supports hold at nwy (nothing psychic there, nwy was under no threat, this is just to show desired alliance) and E supports G hol-bel after G had tried in the previous turn. but you're right, i'm an outsider too so obviously i could be wrong.
