You definitely want to join this game
The Battle of Mons Badonicus, 150 buy-in, PPSC. Serious, active players actively recruited. No particular "school" of players sought. Don't expect ultra-stabbing or ultra-loyalty. Just a good, classic game of Diplomacy with PPSC. Come on, you want to deep inside! Those 8 games you're are not enough. They leave you with nothing to do during the last half hour of your work day.

Swapping land
If Piedmont and Tuscany are going to have a head on collision, but piedmont gets convoyed into Tuscany, and the other army just moves via land, do they swap?

Retreat phase question
When during the retreat phase, if there is only one country that has a retreat to order, but they have no where to retreat to, why doesn't the game just move on?

When countries are decided, I am assuming it is random? Just curious as I have or am playing 13 games and haven't been Germany or France yet.

We're only waiting for Germany to pause, but it seems he's signed off. If you could, that would be great, because it's 1-hour phases.

Face-to-Face Diplomacy
In one of the threads, it said that EdiBirsan might know about places to go for FTF Dip. Is there a directory of this somewhere? Maybe he (or somebody else) happens to know of some in or around Seattle, WA, USA?

Long shot, but worth a try.

Another rules question
What happens if (as in the scenario below) X army attacks a country, and Y army supports X's attack. The attacked country was also supported, so the attack is rebuffed - but X's country also came under attack by a single enemy. X wasn't holding, but rebuffed - does it now count as holding for the purposes of defeating the single army attacking x?

Rules question - attacking/cancelling support
If x army attacks a country, and is supported by y army, but x country also comes under attack, does the attack x is making succeed against a single enemy unit?

Ie if x was supporting and y was attacking, y would lose the support from x - but if x is the one moving to attack, then the support shouldn't be lost?

I agree with Edi Birsan. Go to a school with lots of choices, although ideally one with a strong program in your original program of choice. I go to the University of Washington and started off intending to be a mathematics major, but then discovered what a wonderful thing oceanography is... so there I went. Had I chosen a smaller school (like my sister at the University of Puget Sound, where I could have also majored in mathematics), then I could never have taken exciting courses on things like hydrothermal vents, field oceanography, or paleoclimatology.

Figures. AFROTC. Diplomat was in the Air(un)force. I'll take my Marine Corps training and GI Bill paid for education, knowing I can kick some wimpy AFROTC arse any day of the week.

MARINE CORPS!
Shock troops, devil dogs, blood-sucking war machines!
We are lean! We are mean. We're the seniors fighting machine!
We are rough. We are tough. Break you bones and bite the dust ARRUGH!

Whatever. In the end, we're all on the same side.

Yeah I already know some French from 6 years of public schooling in it... I've been thinking of another language but you're right I guess I can work that out later.

I guess I don't know what life sciences are... like biology?

And no.. I really do want to work in Africa... there's just something about it I can't explain.

I only like amateur sports. And no, I don't count big-name college sports as amateur; it's all about the money, and it would be more honest to pay the players in cash rather than scholarships.

I'll second Toby on that.

Toby and diplomat - I agree with you both on this (and seemingly not many other things =P) college sports should be limited to amateur or intramural affairs and NOT corporatized... College should be for academics... period. too bad I dont run the world- meh!

Thuc - French is great - je parle en peux aussi, mais apres le lycee je ne plus pas continues. sigh. you should keep it up if you like it - and become proficient... in fact, travel to west Africa for a study-abroad program - you could even call up the schools you're interested in to find out about what programs they sponsor etc.

if you want to be diplomat, French is a phenomenal language to know actually - both for bilateral relations (there are dozens of francaphone countries) and for multi-national organizations since it is one of the most important languages to know in the world.

i think its great that you know what you want and sticking to it is positive... but do keep an open mind, because the others are right... the average college students changes majors 2.8 times (or some-such number) during their college careers.

let us know where you get it and good luck man!!

My two cents:

Background: I have a BA in History, and an MBA.

Why do I have a BA in History? Because when I transferred from the JC, that is what I had the most units in

Why do I have an MBA? Because once I got my BA, I realized that it was pretty much worthless in the job market. Fortunately, I only needed a Bachelor's Degree to get into the MBA program, not one with a business concentration.

As other people have said, your college goals should depend on your end goal. My brother is a game programmer, and fairly highly compensated, but his career has pretty much plateued, both because he doesn't have the skills to get *out* of the code monkey arena - and because he doesn't have the desire to be a suit.

IMO, if you're looking for any kind of 'standard' degree, you're wasting money going to a big name campus for the first two years. Trig is Trig no matter where you learn it, and as long as the credits transfer, getting them at a smaller campus is just the same as a biggun. I grant you the difference in instructors, but *my* favorite instructors - meaning the ones I felt I learned the most from - were at my JC.

Go to the most expensive college possible, get into $200,000 of debt, but get a great degree. Then, declare bankruptcy, and walk away with your degree in your pocket.

Study Spanish. It's really good language to learn because all of South America speaks that or Portugese, which isn't that different from Spanish. And it is a Romance language, so it wouldn't be hard to learn Portugese, Italian, or French after learning Spanish.

Also, Babak, "je ne plus pas continues" should be more like "je n'ai plus continué."

Thuc, if you had asked earlier I would have suggested McGill University! Especially since you speak French! But I suppose that's a little farther than you're willing to go for undergrad?

It's interesting to see what sorts of people play Diplomacy. It strikes me that most players here are well educated or likely will be. I definitely think the average IQ on phpDip is well above 100.

Personal bankruptcy in the USA has a special exception for student loan debt. It will not go away.

Yeah the french.. it was understandable at least, which is about all I can say for my own French.

Thanks for the advice I really do appreciate it. And no, Chris... McGill isn't too far for me, it's too far for my parents. Lol.
