Assassin: Another game of intrigue and paranoia
Assassin may be, in fact, the only game that
1) takes longer
2) creates more paranoia
Than Diplomacy.

Any players of Assassin here?
p.Tea (101 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
is that the game where you shoot people with nerf guns
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
That's one way.

We're using more variety of weapons. Water bottles, socks and shoes (off the feet, of course), playing cards, plastic utensils...

But yeah. I targeted somebody most of the players don't like so I've been able to trade information with a ton of them. I have now a list of who's killing who for like half the people playing.

could you tell us a bit about this game pandarsenic?
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassin_(game)

We're playing with one dollar wager from each person, with the person running the game getting a small cut for management costs (which I think is BS, but the person running it is a friend who will have to put up with stupid calls for arbitration at all hours, so I'm tolerating it).

I'm a fan. Are you playing last man standing or most kills?

I recently played it in my residence, but I didn't fare too well because it was early in the year and I would rather socialize than worry about getting killed... unfortunately, that meant leaving my door open, which did indeed get me killed. I managed to take down 3 people before me though.

I love assassin! Im really good. People get scared and leave me alone. They never expected to actually be killed.

Zarathustra (3672 D)

Just playing! i never killed anyone...........
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
Last man standing, but I like to collect kills, myself. And yeah, we have a rule that indoors and weekends are off-limits to prevent anything too extreme.
Chrispminis (916 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
Wow seriously? Then it must be a fairly slow game, if indoors are barred. Outside it's a little difficult to get someone on their own. The only safe zones we played with were bathrooms, and even then it took long enough, though we probably had about 80 players.
mac (189 D)

I wonder if somebody has ever come up with an e-mail variant of it... (I remember there was a game similar to that played with faxes, phones, mails, etc... in USA, but has been stopped after the WTC attacks)
Thucydides (864 D(B))
29 Oct 08 UTC
Yes, I have played this game. I had some glorious kills, let me tell you. Survivors guilt is extreme though. I died the night after my glorious betrayal. But we had very specific rules that I forgot most of. I had an extensive arsenal though.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
30 Oct 08 UTC
Three kills today. There are 6 of 21 players left alive by now.

Chrispminis, you'd think it would be slow. It isn't. We're vicious. Then again, inside barred is to avoid disrupting classes, but only other live players can act as witnesses.

First kill: Got someone to "Watch my back." Turned and stabbed seconds later.

Second kill: Nailed him right in the stomach while walking past him because he didn't know I'd inherited his card.

Kill three: This is amazing. I staked out his bike for an hour and a half after taking its seat off, taking the chain off its gears, and loosening both axles. Managed to jump him and stab his back on his way over to it. Discovered minutes later that it was someone else's bike, in fact. Undid all the things I'd done.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
30 Oct 08 UTC
Oh, and today was the first day.
Chrispminis (916 D)
30 Oct 08 UTC
Wow, that's some serious play. We played by hitting each other with socks, and anybody could act as a witness if they knew what was going on, and many non-players were aware of the game so they were allowed to act as witnesses. I can see that with just live players as witnesses it would speed it up quite a bit.

I had an epic struggle in my friends room. I walked in after inheriting his card from my previous victim, and I asked him for a sock. And he was like... "why...?" and slowly got up. I just closed his door and started to take off my shoe. He charged me and grabbed my sock and we had a tug of war, while I started taking off my other shoe. But he managed to grab that sock too and we were tugging on both, while I managed to lock the door with my elbow. The struggle continued when I noticed a sock peeking out from under his bed, and I dropped my socks and quickly lunged, grabbing it, and then finally smacked him with it.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
30 Oct 08 UTC
Wow, nice.

But yeah. Our weapon list:

Sharpie
Water Bottle
Paper Airplane
Paper Clip
Cardboard Sword
Rubber Band
Sock
Shoe

There may be more, but I'm not sure. I think those are all.

Day 2 here, and I just nailed another player this morning. I'm in my 3rd period and I'm going to try to nail my next target during break.
Chrispminis (916 D)
30 Oct 08 UTC
Yeah, it can be very fun, and definitely induces paranoia. You'll start to be suspicious of anyone you know to have been part of the game... Even when you get killed, you feel a lot of relief. Finally, I'm free! Haha.

A few people designed sock traps. They would put socks on top of doors, which when opened would fall upon their victims along with a note proclaiming them killed.

You said, and i quote...
"Day 2 here, and I just nailed another player this morning. I'm in my 3rd period and I'm going to try to nail my next target during break."

i'm saying that there are better ways to phrase what you mean to say instead of making a double entendre laiden sentence, which i must admit is funny and could totally be followed up by one of those kids in the background yelling "that's what she said."

This sounds like a game that in the 60's was done with 'winking' as shooting.
The rest of the stuff in the current version seems to be escalating to a point of potential real world issues, in short maybe it is going too far?
But then again I am an old fogey.

Assasin - such fun. I've never played. My son did during his Junior year of HS. On the morning of his birthday, he burst into the kitchen panting. The house was surrounded, but evidently they didn't know he'd gotten into the house. We didn't breathe. After a few minutes, they retreated and drove to school. I went out, opened the trunk, and walked around the house looking for anyone hiding. I drove him to school. About half-way there, he squirmed out of the trunk and into the back seat. I dropped him off about a half-block from school. All day he basked in the glory of escaping from the track team.
Of course, as a parent I'm not allowed to support assassins. I have to decry the use of guns and the hunting of humans.

and Edi the game you speak of is Mafia

although there are different forms of Mafia (card based, real life, and posers) the one that you are referring to is where everyone sits at a table and draws a card. There are cards that represent the Sheriff, Towns People, and Mafia Member(s). the point of the game is for the Mafia member(s) to eliminate the Sheriff or for the Sheriff to catch the Mafia member(s) in the act of winking at someone. The only person able to speak is the Sheriff that way the towns people cannot complain when they are "axed" and give away the Mafia on purpose.

There is another version of mafia that is also card based but it is also turn based. Every person draws a card and depending on which card they get they are either a Mafia, Sheriff, Towns person, or Doctor. there is also a neutral person who is the narrator and their job is to make up names for people and add creativity to the game with colorful background stories. each turn the narrator tells everyone to close their eyes and bow their heads. he/she then tells the mafia member(s) to raise their head(s) and pick one person who they wish to eliminate. next the narrator tells them to bow their head and tells the sheriff to raise their head and pick one person. the narrator then either nods or shakes(yes or no) his/her head whether or not the chosen person is a mafia member. next its the doctors turn to pick a person who they would like to "save." if the doctor guesses the person that the mafia picked to ax then that person does not die but if they guess wrong then all they did was pay a fellow towns person a friendly visit. the final step to each round is deliberation. during deliberation the entire group playing try to agree on one person who they would like to eliminate from the game. the sheriff is supposed to try and convince the towns people who the mafia people are and the mafia should try and not get chosen by focusing attention on someone else.

Haha, it's fine. Also, Mafia is another amazingly fun game. More of a play-and-you're done game. Assassin? Assassin is a lifestyle choice.

And that choice is "paranoia."

Queens runs an official event like this called catch me if you can. The top three finishers split a pot close to 2 grand. We used clothespins to designate those caught. On the last day for the last one the four final finishers all ended up at the same house, as two of them had trapped the leader and the fourth person was negotiating for a piece of the settlement. The year before the winner won by sleeping in his car for a month.

No, Edi isn't thinking of Mafia, though I was once an avid fan of that game. He's referring to the game similar in theme where players it around in a circle and one person is designated murderer and another designated detective. The murderer tries to discretely wink at the other players which kills them. The detective tries to catch the murderer in the act of winking. The detective wins by correctly accusing the murderer. The murderer wins by either killing everyone, which rarely happens, or by the detective making a false accusation.

I don't THINK it was a misorder, but if you look at the Large View, Austria (me) had Rumania Support Move from Serbia to Constantinople. This Support (and thus, the move) failed for no apparent reason. To quote one player I was talking to, this "makes no sense whatsoever." Any ideas?

I thing the Help could include some more information, like that you can't move two ships onto one sea, like I tried in my absolute first Diplomacy turn here: http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6415. You should also include that you only capture a country at the end of a Year and other important information. If you can't/ don't want to put this information on the Help Page please include at least some information.

CD status
I think the game is kicking people into CD status too early. In the game http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6079 during the spring move Germany has 4 sc's and make his move. During the fall move he fails to submit orders and was reduced to 1 sc prior to retreats. Because he is at 1 sc and did not submit an order he was placed in CD status. This then caused the retreat to automatically be disbanded.
