Actually, the funniest punned joke I have ever heard was based on French pronunciation. It only really works when spoken, which is a shame because I cannot share it on here. It was though performed by Robin Williams when he was talking about having met the wife of General Charles de Gaul...

A joke about Lenin (not a pun)

A man goes to the Kremlin shortly after WW2 and asks the guard if he can speak to Lenin. The guard informs him, "No comrade, Lenin is dead."

The next day the man returns with the same request, and the guard responds once again in the same way.

On the third day the man returns and once more asks to see Lenin. Confused, the guard asks, "Why do you always come? I've told you, Lenin is dead!"
