Ways to minimize site & game abuse
1. Have a way to drop off a starting game list if the other players joining seem to be only intersted in amassing a huge game count - i.e., if you don't like the other players, you can leave before the game starts

2. eliminate number of games played from any ranking system with the sole exception of calculating Winning Average

3. maintain statistics on players going into civil disorder - above a threshold, civil disorders should be penalized. Players with too many should be banned from the site. (I would favor that the treshold be quite low.)

Separating the games based on skill
Far too often, I see some people plowing through some games mostly because they are surrounded by some people new to the game (and the sudden flood of new players coming on). This can give an unfair start to some of the newer players of the game.

So what I propose is this:
When you create a new game, there can be a new option where you can select the skill level of people you want to play with (Beginner, Intermediate, Expert). Then, the joinable section page will have 3 parts (not on the same page) Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert. This way, some of the newer players can start off on some 'Beginner' games, then when they feel ready, they can move on to 'Intermediate', and the more experienced players can have a more equal challange.

Hopefully, that will make the games more balanced with people of the same skill level playing against one another.

Newbie Questions
After a turn is resolved, is there a list of orders posted anywhere? If my unit was displaced by an enemy unit using one or more supporting units, can I tell which units supported? Currently, I cannot tell if two countries are ganging up on me in certain scenarios.

Also, there are several situations listed in the FAQs that can occur that do not comply with the rules. How are those resolved if they happen (e.g. disruption of a convoy without displacing the unit)?

Mutual support-hold net?
Just to clarify my intterpretation of the rules here, if I have two adjacent territories, set to support hold each other, then if one xor the other are attacked, then it still recieves the support, but if both are attacked, they're both on their own?

Server Crash?
i tried to send a message, then the page took ten minutes to load (literally), then i got this message:

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

oh, and the old "Everyone finalized their orders but we're still in this phase" bug is still here.

login site confusion
when I was traveling and away from my own computer, I tried to login at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpdiplomacy which is where I believed I first created an account. However, my username (or email address) and/or password were not accepted. I then went to: http://phpdiplomacy.net/ and was able to login.

Where do people new to the site go to be able to join??

Supporting a convoy move
I haven't seen anything in the rules about this, but is it possible/what is the syntax for supporting a convoy move with another unit?
E.g. I have armies in Portugal and Paris and a fleet in the Mid-Atlantic. My enemey has an army in Brest, so I tell my army in Portugal to convoy to the Mid-Atlantic, I tell my Mid-Atlantic fleet to convoy from Portugal to Brest, and my Parisians to support move to Brest from the Mid-Atlantic?
Is this a valid move?

Bug with stalemates
In Oktoberland game:

Spring 1909, Diplomacy: Your fleet at English Channel attempted to move into Mid-Atlantic Ocean but there was a stalemate.

This also happened before, I think in Spring 1903, in Livonia.

On both occasions, Austria successfully moved into the "stalemated" territory. I think it's the move and not the message that's wrong, but I'm not 100% sure as I don't know his allies etc.

the board game
The board version of Diplomacy is out-of-print, but presumably there are still some floating around. Anyone know where I might find one?

I may have found a bug
In the Game: http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=612, I just lost StP but it wouldn't let me retreat to Norway, or Barents Sea even though I was a fleet in the North Coast. Maybe it mixed up the coasts?

Civil Disorder in Password Protected Games
I'm slightly disturbed by the large number of password protected games in which many nations are in civil disorder. In fact, in "No Mans Land" all but one player is in civil disorder. And even that player doesn't appear to be doing much (3 units in 1906, with 6 countries in civil disorder.)

I realize that password protected games are valid, however in games with large numbers (read 3 or 4+) of nations in civil disorder, it becomes an abuse of the statistics. I've read that the way stats are counted is changing, and hopefully a way of reconciling these abuses is accounted for.

Would anyone care to discuss possible statistics scoring solutions? Please remember that the devs are not obligated to implement anything that comes out of the discussion, as I do not speak for them.

Fleet problem
In the game Bloodbath the following message was displayed in the gamelog:

Autumn 1905, Diplomacy: Your army at Venice was attacked by the army at Rome, but sucessfully defended.

Since France has a fleet in Rome (by the graphics) this move is an illegal move which is not allowed by the rules.

From the rules:
"A fleet may move to any body of water or coastal province which is adjacent to its current location, unless this move causes it to conflict with another unit.
When a fleet is in a coastal province, the warships are assumed to be at any point along the coast of that province. The fleet may move to an adjacent coastal province only if it is adjacent along the coastline, so that the vessels could move down the coast to that province; for example, a fleet may move from Rome to Tuscany or Rome to Naples, but not from Rome to Venice, because these two provinces, although adjacent and both coastal, are adjacent only along an inland boundary, not along a coastline."

Do we need an "ignore" feature?
The PLEASEBEITALY threads are quite entertaining, but it can be annoying when there is someone using the message system just to hurl torrents of abuse and threats at you. The same goes for people who's words are worthless because they've gone back on every deal they ever made, and those who just try and turn you against other countries. Of course you can always not read them, but the other guy has no idea of knowing that you're not reading them.

So how about an "ignore" feature - the Diplomacy version of cutting off diplomatic ties? That can be a diplomatic move in itself. I can think of at least two people I would have used this against if it was available!

If your rank is atleast a Mastermind then you can certainly join this game, find a way to contact me and I'll shoot you the password.

Otherwise, I also made three other games without passwords just now, as someone said we didn't have enough games.

I Already Hated Waiting..
on countries that were civil disorder, and I won two previous games because of the short 24 hour period, as I was off on vacation the next day. Why should it be 40 hours, all of a sudden? If you think it'll help, ok, and if your open for discussion oh wise owner, would you like to lower it to say.. 32-36?

Game "7-6 Game ISB" is Hanging
The private game "7-6 Game ISB" (http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=640) is hanging at 1911, Unit Placing. Everyone has submitted their orders yet the timer is still counting down. Also I would win after this turn, because I have 16 units and 18 supply centers. Is this normal?

Dreamhost had a DDoS attack earlier and the site was offline for a while. But because it was against the DNS it would have been up for some people and down for others, so I disabled game processing, and I'm increasing game processing times by 24 hours

Automatic Civil Disorder
There should be a way to automatically turn your country into civil disorder. People quit Diplomacy or go on vacations, and then everybody else in their games has to wait 24 hours before they can make a move. So if your leaving for a trip or quitting Diplomacy there should be an option for you to turn your countries into civil disorder so other people don't have to wait needlessly. Of course, all other civil disorder rules apply.

Free For All Games
I started one up just yesterday, and I told everyone when the game actually started it was a free for all and such. One player asked me how could that be enforced, there would surely be some secret alliances. Now, I understand Diplomacy is about dipomacy, but that doesn't mean we can't change it around a bit, right? So is it possible, mr. owner, to create a option for new games to make them free for all, and to now allow players to talk to each other?

I would just like one thing cleared up.
Britain's navy was in Norway, and I (being Russia) forced him out. Somehow he retreated to St. Peterberg, which I controlled. How is this possible?
