But pretty close. Two of the fastest intensifications known happened in the last two years. Two data points ain't much by themselves, but enough to make one wonder.

(And it's pretty rich to argue that it is "political correctness" to argue what is factually correct because people who want to see their biases confirmed don't understand that factual reality. When, you know, reality gets called political correctness, there is a major major problem. Sorry, but that's really insulting and very telling).

But close though. Forrest was 92 mbar in a day, Patricia was 95. Still, the lack of detailed measure limits much of a look back. However the clustering at the end of the historical record is suggestive.

Nine years have had seven or more hurricanes by mid September. Four have been in the last fifteen year, and five in the last 25. The entire century before that? Had four. Had that century spawned big hurricanes years at that rate, the century from 1886 to 1996 would have had twenty such years. Instead it had four.

Bo, the point about Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands is more to draw attention to the fact that they're suffering. If you don't harp on the fact that "These people are Americans" to Billy Bob, then he won't give a damn.

I think wildlife populations have rather a different view. With a lot of species essentially vanishing, pressure is definitely increasing.

Malthus wasn't so much talking about that though. He thought we literally wouldn't be able to feed ourselves, and the planet would be crushed with overpopulation, starvation, civil strife and poverty. Think the Middle East, sans oil, and everywhere.

People forget or never new that a lot of this country was never an English colony, but was first native, then Spanish, then Mexican, then finally under US control. as they say, nosotros nunca cruzamos la frontera. La frontera nos cruzo! When people start talking about "immigrants" and how their ancestors came over on the Mayflower yada yada, I like to mention that my ancestors have been in this country since the 1530s and see if they notice what that means.
