@Tru Ninja,
I get the sense from you that if we actually hung out, I wouldn't have to apologize much. You're what we in the South refer to as a straight-shooter.
It also depends on the setting. If I were invited over to chez Ninja, for example I'd show up with a gift and start complimenting you on things (apartment, family, etc.) until I was told to stop and relax. But the compliment on manners provides the critical signal to relax.
If I bumped into you at a gaming convention I feel like I wouldn't need to apologize since it's neutral turf.
With someone emotional, for example, it's completely different. Have you ever played a press game with Draugnar?
Instead of just saying "Hey bro, can you tap Greece?", I had instead developed a template for exchanging press with him:
"Dear Sir,
I am truly sorry for
*insert bizarre series of accusations here*. These are of course all true
and I apologize for all of them, as well as the various defects of both my
character and personality that have lead to these errors.
You deserve better than this, and the fact that I control eight supply
centers, while you control only four is entirely my fault.
I would like to express my condolences.
Could you please tap Greece?
I thank you in advance, and also apologize both for the terseness and the
very unfortunate timing of this message. I can understand that you're
going through a lot, and would like to thank you both for your years of
military service to our country and to express the utmost sympathy for
your position."
Thanks for the question. That reminds me, Sir Ninja, you and I need to play a press game some time soon.
