Worst Non-Sitcom TV Show You've Ever Watched? (4 Episodes Minimum)
Friends were raving about this Netflix show, "Orange is the New Black." Watched. ..It's awful. Wall to wall. The main lead (not the actress herself, she seems to be trying, at least) is like the adult equivalent of Bella Swann meets Every Yuppie Character Ever. Every character's a stereotype. Every guy is a perv, sex-crazed ass, douche, OR just has no life whatsoever. The writing is as bad as I've seen...and yet, this won awards? xD So, worst shows?

Populism and Democracy
I've heard in here that populism is the plague that affects democracy (the topic praising appeasement). I would like people to elaborate on the subject - how does populism undermine the democratic principles, and what can we learn about this in history?

Appeasement: unfairly maligned strategy?
I've been reading quite a bit about British & French foreign policy at the turn of the century, and it seems like appeasement (reduction of tensions through concessions) has gotten an unnecessarily bad reputation.

Can atheists believe in free will?
If our consciousness is simply a product of the mushy 3-dimensional circuit board we call a brain, governed entirely by the fixed and unchanging laws of physics and chemistry, is there any kind of free will? Or are all our decisions in life predetermined, like a computer program running through its code, simply responding to various inputs?

Again--This is NOT a Christian Country...
http://news.yahoo.com/republicans-obama-must-defend-christian-values-192212780--election.html Christians live here--AND Jews, AND Muslims, AND Buddhists and Hindus and Atheists (fastest growing group!) AND dozens of others (including, hey, all those Native American tribes and religions...many of which were criminalized in part until the 1970s)...WHY? Why must Obama defend the values of a specific sect, when the Constitution clearly is anti-favoritism in terms of religion?

Would anyone be interested in creating a game, that each of the 7 clasic countries were comprised of two team members consulting together. I understand that only one can actually be listed in the game itself, but maybe create a side pot for the second team members that would pay out equally at end of game

Putin on Putin: An Open Invitation to Putin33 on the Russia/Ukraine/Syria Crisis
Welcome BACK, Putin33...my oh my, how the world of international politics has exploded since you last graced us with your presence...are you ready to decry your namesake for the scourge of the world that he is? Most assuredly not, but let this be an open letter and open invitation for you to give YOUR take on the whole of the crisis--and your namesake in particular--as so many have been wondering if you'd capitulate to common sense and call him out for the thug Big Bad Vlad is.
Putin33 (111 D)

I already answered this troll.

Why would I "capitulate" to the fascist Ukrainian government you are supporting?

As usual, like a good neo-con, you ascribe dispositional motives to Russia while giving situational excuses for EU/US behavior. The EU aided and abeted Maidan, knowing full well the situation would turn chaotic (despite all the warnings), supported the violent coup, tore up the February agreement, have supported the nationalist/fascist violence after the coup. The Russian speakers are defending themselves from a pogrom, and Crimea is as Russian as Ohio.

Russia has behaved with utmost restraint considering the Kiev authorities are waging all out war on Russian speakers in the east. You wouldn't tolerate this behavior in Syria, but somehow the oligarchs in Kiev who shout "kill all the Moscals" and sport swastikas get a free pass.

Well obiwanobiwan, you ruined it.
The only thing you can indisputably call out Putin33 for is ruining a discussion because of a statement that he considered fact, even though it has been proven wrong:

"No one is going to annex anyone."

Frankly, I'm quite sure obiwanobiwan is the bigger idiot of the two on this subject, since Putin33 knows what he's talking about. It's just that he makes a couple of ridiculous claims. Obiwanobiwan does that quite often too though.

"By the way Obi, what is your take on your rebel friends in Syria rampaging through Iraq? Going to admit your anti-Syrian stance has been a complete disaster?"

Pardon me?

I have an Anti-ASSAD stance, thank you...and I'm happy to keep that stance...if you'd like to support a brutal, bloodthirsty, miserable dictator--

Well, then I have to say, Putin, you haven't changed a bit.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
24 Jun 14 UTC
I was for working with the NON-ISIS/terrorist factions of the Syrian resistance.

"And as Kissinger said"

And to add to the reputable band of bastards Putin uses to support his views--Henry Kissinger, everyone! The man responsible for bombing Cambodia and arguably indirectly being responsible for the vacuum that let Pol Pot and his Khmer cronies come to power! Now THERE'S a man I trust for fair, balanced, and truly trustworthy international analysis!

And while we're on the subject of discussing past views on world leaders--

Care to tell us again how the new Kim in North Korea is going to redeem THAT horrible Orwellian dictatorship?

But let's first deal with that statement anyway, continue--

"you and the US government's attempts to personalize this conflict and turn Putin into another one of your "Satan/devils" that are supposedly evil incarnate compared to the good ol' USA who bombs half a dozen countries thousands of miles away for no reason is not a policy, it's an alibi for a total lack of policy."

1. I don't have to "attempt" to turn Putin into a "satan/Devil"--the man prolongs civil wars, arguably helps to start them, backs up ruthless dictators and stonewalls UN action against them (and yes, it's wrong when the US does that, too) and throws his own people in prison in waves of persecution...tell me again how that's defensible?

2. WE personalized it? Putin and his government have themselves wasted no time blasting members of our government...pettiness is as pettiness does.

3. Did I say we're the good ol' US of A? No. As usual, for someone who prides himself on allegedly having such a nuanced view of the world, you skip right over any semblance of nuance and stumble right into a steaming pile of your own insipid heap of oversimplifications. Does Putin being bad make us good? No. I'm perfectly willing to call us the "lesser of two evils," if you like...

But we ARE the lesser of the two, make no mistake--we're not the ones supporting Assad, OR fanning the flames of civil war in the Ukraine, OR jailing LGBT people (well, OK, except in the South, of course, but then, that's the same region of the country that produced a President that mused that Putin MUST be a good man because he was a religious man...this, after his country was attacked by hijackers acting in the name of religion. The American South--they wanted to secede, and day after day, I increasingly wonder if it was really worth keeping them from doing so. *Warning--that last statement is a quip and do not reflect the actual view of Obi or affiliates...all two of them.)

4. A total lack of policy? I'm fine with you calling the Obama administration's policy in Syria, at least, failed. That IS a fair criticism. However, a failed policy isn't the same as a lack of one--we tried, we failed. Not the same as having no plan whatsoever.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

"My oh my what the world look like if Obama, the man who orders drone strikes using playing cards, would stop attacking countries left and right?"

I don't know--it might look something like the Cold War II, with an aggressive Kremlin and a President who's weak on foreign policy overall--

HEY! Wait a minute...hm...

And by the way--didn't you yourself rank Obama highly in our rankings of the Presidents a year or two back?

Granted, you're a man who puts Jimmy Carter at the top, so there's no accounting for taste, but still--aren't you ALSO the one who criticized ME for daring to criticize Obama, stating that party loyalty is paramount?

And here you are, criticizing Obama...remind me how you're not a hypocrite again?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

"Frankly, I'm quite sure obiwanobiwan is the bigger idiot of the two on this subject, since Putin33 knows what he's talking about. It's just that he makes a couple of ridiculous claims. Obiwanobiwan does that quite often too though."

Explain to me again how the man that backs Putin, Assad, and Kim Jong-Il is one who both knows what they're talking about and makes only "a couple" ridiculous claims?

Say what you like about me--I don't make claims so ridiculous as arguing party loyalty is paramount, that Jimmy Carter was the best US president, and that China (if I recall?) should receive the Nobel Peace Prize when they're currently facing human rights violations.

I back a country (Israel) that has human rights violations, too--

But that's ONE (two if we're to count the US) vs. North Korea, Assad, Putin and China, AND I've never advocated for something so ludicrous as ANY of those parties receiving a peace prize, when those aforementioned parties, along with Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, and let's just say most to all of the Middle East at this point are ALL the biggest threats to world peace out of close to 200 countries.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
24 Jun 14 UTC
AND I've said about two dozen times by this point that I advocate both a two-state solution for the Palestinians as part of a peace process AND that Israel needs a serious regime change to purge itself of the far-Right racists, religious zealots, and just plain thugs that are currently polluting Israel's image on the world stage.

I would have an IMMENSE amount more respect for Putin if he'd advocate for regime and policy change in ANY of those nations--Russia, China, North Korea (and I mean REAL change, not swapping a Kim for a Kim) and Syria.

But he doesn't.

For as pragmatic and open-minded as he pretends to be, Putin is as dogmatic as they come, essentially the anti-krellin policy-wise...

And both agree on one point as well--both advocate for the extremes, krellin the Far Right, Putin the Far Left.

I advocate for the Moderates--I'm Left of Center, but I'll listen to someone on the right if they're not Tea Party cartoonish a la krellin, and I can be appalled by those so insipidly assured of their own smug world view on the Left as Putin33.

@obi: I said *on this subject*. In fact, you even quoted that bit. If we're going to exclude everything else you said because it's simply off-topic, that reduces your argument to:

"Explain to me again how the man that backs Putin (...) knows what they're talking about and makes only "a couple" ridiculous claims?"

He backs Putin as opposed to the Ukrainian opposition. They both have some valid points and many invalid points I suppose, who's right is up to everyone to decide for theirselves. Personally, I think you're wrong if you back either one of those parties, but if you're going to see it black-and-white, there's probably about a 90% chance that you see Ukraine as white (good) and a 10% chance that you see Putin as white (good). That's mostly just a PR-thing though, so it doesn't tell anything about which is the right choice.

@steephie:

I agree it's complex, and more than a black and white situation...

I support Ukraine, but even saying that, I have to qualify what I mean by that, as there are different factions and factions within factions.

I am most certainly against Putin and the pro-Russian forces...

That being said, there are some nasty right-wing, Neo-Nazi elements in the current Ukrainian regime that ousted the former PM.

I don't respect Putin's intentions in the area, nor do I see him as being genuine, and I certainly don't respect what he's done with Crimea...

At the same time, I don't like all the things the new Ukrainian government could become, either.

In much the same way as I'd be for supporting the non-ISIS Syrian opposition forces in Syria, I'd be for supporting the non-fascistic elements in Ukraine, which leads to the obvious problem of how to do that without the unsavory elements stealing that aid...

Which is frankly far too complex an issue for one post, even if I were to make it Obi-length, as it were.

I WILL say that I think the Ukrainian situation's an easier choice than the Syrian one...I doubt many here would, if forced to pick a side, side with Putin or the pro-Russian forces, whereas Assad vs. rebels that include ISIS...I'm anti-Assad, but I'll admit, that's still a far closer call, at least.

Why do I even bother with Obi's bullshit, I don't know.

"1. I don't have to "attempt" to turn Putin into a "satan/Devil"--the man prolongs civil wars, arguably helps to start them, backs up ruthless dictators and stonewalls UN action against them (and yes, it's wrong when the US does that, too) and throws his own people in prison in waves of persecution...tell me again how that's defensible?"

You couldn't be more wrong if you tried. Prolonged civil wars? Who supported the Syrian terrorists armed uprising against the Syrian government? The west, that's who. And who upped the ante every time it looked like the government was on the brink of victory? The west of course. Prolonged civil wars my foot. Russia has called for dialogue and adherence to the Geneva agreement. Who supported the armed Maidan uprising and violent coup vs the elected government of Ukraine, followed by the pogrom against Russian speakers which you don't seem to care about in the slightest? The west. And yet you claim this is all Russia's fault. What a bunch of malarkey.

Who supported the overthrow of Gaddafi, which subsequently led to a civil war and coup in Mali, and subsequently led to the Boko Haram getting flush with weapons to kidnap girls?

And yet Putin is the scourge of the world!? Get real! Who orders drone strikes by literally looking at baseball cards, assassinating people anywhere in the world that it pleases him to do so? Yemen, Pakistan, Afghanistan, doesn't matter. That's not Putin. That's the US administration.

But you're the nuanced one, right?

You're nothing but a neo-con dressed up in liberal clothing. You're another blustering John McCain.

"and let's just say most to all of the Middle East at this point are ALL the biggest threats to world peace out of close to 200 countries."

Thanks to people like you in Washington, bombing countries all over the place and backing terrorists against secular governments like Syria's.

You're to blame for this mess. Stop putting it on Russia.

The notion that Obi is a "moderate" is also garbage. He's only a moderate in the US sense, but nobody thinks the US policy spectrum is remotely balanced.

Since when have you cared that attacking/bombing countries might lead to power vacuums leading to the rise of horrible groups? You certainly don't care when it comes to Syria or Ukraine or Libya.
