The Last Damn NFL Thread (Until the Next One, Of Course)
http://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/Does-Seahawks-win-mean-49ers-are-second-best-5201416.php So...we all know that was about as big an ass-kick as you'll ever see in the Super Bowl (tied for the 3rd biggest blowout with the 52-17 beat down the '92 Cowboys gave the Bills.) They're talking (OH GOD NO!) *DYNASTY* in Seattle...buy it? Buy the 49ers as the #2 team? (Thanks, Richard Sherman.) :p What about Cam's Panthers? Is the AFC toast? What's your takeaway?

Katrina revisited
Barsky, L., Trainor, J., & Torres, M. (2006). Disaster realities in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina: Revisiting the looting myth..................
Freely available at http://www.lawschool.cornell.edu/research/cornell-law-review/upload/Sun-final.pdf
fulhamish (4134 D)
06 Feb 14 UTC
Yes uncle fulham is finally reading some sociology as recommended by Putin, amongst others.

So it seems like that looting, raping and mayhem post-Katrina was just a media myth after all, who would have thought it...... (?)The vast majority of people actually behaved with considerable humanity, rather than showing savage base instincts to survive and prosper at any cost.

The unfortunate thing was that the neo-social Darwinist response of the authorities actually compounded the problem. This from the conclusion:

''The true nightmare of Katrina was not the anarchy and violence reported to have
consumed the city; rather, it was the painfully slow and often-misguided response –
spurred in part by the disaster myth of widespread looting and violence – that
compounded the suffering of Katrina’s victims and all but guaranteed that disaster would
become catastrophe. If we are to avoid that nightmare scenario in future disasters, we
must reform both the design and implementation of our disaster laws to avoid the
overemphasis on security and law enforcement that the disaster myth encourages.''
there was considerable looting in post-Katrina NOLA but it was grossly overblown and the NOPD was about as shitty as possible in response to it
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

There was just as much looting as there is after just about every disaster... my ex and I talked about it a lot, especially when storms hit here.

"If we are to avoid that nightmare scenario in future disasters, we
must reform both the design and implementation of our disaster laws to avoid the
overemphasis on security and law enforcement that the disaster myth encourages.''

Uh, there is a lot of bullshit in this statement. Truth is, a lot of people got stuck in NOLA because the Local and State authorities didn't do their job in evacuating people. A lot of buses that should have taken people out of the area (by force if necessary, so as to minimize the risk of life later in rescue efforts) instead sat idle until they were swamped.

The laws were not the problem in this case, nor was the disaster plan. The failure was **implementing** the plans. The failure was in the Leadership, starting with the Mayor, and moving on up. But nobody wants to point a quivering finger at the Democrat mayor of the city, for fear of the inevitable cries of racism that will be attached to any criticism at that level.

07 Feb 14 UTC
OK Thucy -- I know you live in a delusional fantasy land...but I'm pretty certain that during Katrina you were probably one of the Lib-Zombies walking with arms stretched out before you moaning, "Bush....Bush....Bush....did....this.....Bushhhhhh...."

You, as always, are a laughable fool.

The Nagin corruption charges have exactly what to do with a discussion of Katrina, and the failure of the media as a whole, and Democrats nation-wide, to lay any blame at Nagin's feet.

Go away, Thucy, until you man up enough to demonstrate a little intellectual integrity.
krellin (80 DX)
07 Feb 14 UTC
And -- as **always** is the case, Thucwad -- you entirely ignored that point I made -- which is that suggesting laws and disaster plans need to be changed because of Katrina is ridiculous, since the problem wasn't the plan (i.e. use buses to evacuate people), it was the failure of leadership (Nagin....but nobody had the balls to call his name out...it was Bush's fault for *everything*...and continues to be so to this day).

So man up, Thucwad, and address this.

Lol during Katrina I was a bush fan and knew fuck-all about New Orleans. Didn't even know it was majority black so I didn't understand the race thing. As you love to point out in your counter factual way, this was in a period of my life where I was almost entirely unaware of racial issues, since I'm white.

All I knew was that the Katrina kids who came to my school got in fights with the gangs that were already there several times during lunch. And I also knew many misguided whites from my southern baptist church who went to New Orleans to build a playground that would later rust and get their pictures taken in front of St. Louis cathedral, all in time to be back for classes after spring break.

But of course, I was very much a child at the time. Lord knows what you must have been thinking as an adult. I shudder to imagine the insensitive merciless darkness that must have inhabited your mind

" I was almost entirely unaware of racial issues, since I'm white." Ridiculous excuse, because now he claims to know all about racial issues, and I think he's still white...

" Didn't even know it was majority black" / ." the Katrina kids who came to my school got in fights with the gangs " Conflicting assertions -- another lie exposed.

"misguided whites from my southern baptist church who went to New Orleans to build a playground...in time to be back for classes after spring break." Criticizes white kids for giving up their spring break to do a community project...because, if you are Thucy, black kids don't deserve play grounds, I guess????? This one is just irrational...I think somehow it's falls back on Thucy's deeply rooted white-guilt, wherein no white person is capable of good...

So basically, Thucy had made a wholly irrational post indicating he knew nothing about Katrina, but in the absence of knowledge, he is fully prepared to judge.

And....more to the point....he has *AGAIN* 100% failed to address the point I made, which he continually dodges...that the problem with Katrina was not bad laws or bad evacuation plans, it was a failure of leadership.

Well done Thucwad...I'm starting to believe you must be a government spy, seeing as how you are the master of evasion and all that. Either that or you are just a fucking coward.
krellin (80 DX)
07 Feb 14 UTC
" Lord knows what you must have been thinking" I'm trying to discuss what I thought -- you are too much of a pussy to address it. My opening thought was that the failure was one of leadership on the ground level, starting first and foremost with the Mayor that refused to evacuate the people using the buses at his disposal. It was a travesty of justice. That is my initial thought, which you apparently are too much of a coward to address for some unknown reason. As always, when I make a point in a discussion - you evade it.

But..we do see quite clearly that Thucy *gut reaction* is to look for some skin to judge...hey, let's blame whitey...because in Thucy's dark, dark heart, we *always* start with the flesh and judge a person/group by the color of their skin - it determines Thucy's expectations, it determines his first impressions, it determines if Thucy will/will not hold someone accountable for their actions. Thucy, the bigot, has made this much clear in his above statements...or lack of statements.

What I find peculiar is how you are all so obsessed with assigning blame over failed disaster management (is there ever any disaster where it doesn't fail?) rather than with the fact that there wouldn't even have been a disaster if there had been some proper flood protection, i.e. levees and shit.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Feb 14 UTC
oscar - true dat, brother. Of course, there is blame to be placed, even if you are pointing at the levees "and shit", as the federal government had provided funding for the levees "and shit" to be upgraded years and years before but...<wait for it...> corrupt Democrats running the state never seemed to get around to actually, you know, fixing up the levees "and shit".

Regardless - the levees "and shit" failed and flooded the city - and the disaster plan for such an occurrence -- like put everybody on those buses and drag their asses kicking and screaming if necessary out of town to safety -- was not implemented by the state and local officials, causing people to be trapped and endangered, thus endangering the lives of rescuers....all because of a failure of leadership.

so there is blame to be place all over.

and the reason you place blame is so that you can study the failure, and try to prevent it from happening again.

For example, if you have inept, corrupt leadership, you don't re-elect the corrupt leader once you realize they are to blame for endangering people's lives. sadly, the collective morons in NOLA didn't learn this particular lesson, and put the failure-of-a-mayor back in office, where he <gasp!!!> again failed the people, for which he is now under investigation...he wouldn't have been in a position to <potentially> commit these criminal acts and screw the people if he had been properly and openly blamed for his failures, and the people had learned their lesson that he is a suck-wad.

So the FAILURE to properly place blame on Nagin caused further harm down the road *to the same people*.
tendmote (100 D(B))

Totally agree oscarjd74. People not giving a shit about doing their job will be the downfall of civilization. Levee inspectors, crime labs, health inspectors, people just "phoning it in" as if what they were doing *didn't matter.* Dang.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Feb 14 UTC
tendmote - you just assigned blame to individuals not doing their jobs. oscar seems to think that assigning blame is bad -- so in fact you totally disagree with oscar.

Reading capabilities

tendmote - krellin : 1 - 0
krellin (80 DX)
08 Feb 14 UTC
oscar - you complete and utter inability to convey the thoughts you wish to convey is the real culprit here.

So, to play the blame game...that is the fault of First, you parents; second, your pathetic public school education; three YOU, naturally.

Even you ability to convey a score "tendmote - krellin : 1 - 0 " is written in Raterd-ese.

Try this:

tendmote: 0, Krellin: 1 <--- This would be the more conventional way to express this information, asswad -- the way everyone in the would EXCEPT you wold write it. That you fail in this most-simple of tasks is indicative of your inability to express thought across the board.

And...of course....you make you dumbass comment, without clarifying...so let me clarify for you:

Your retarded assertion that there would be no disaster management necessary if only they had fixed the levees "and shit" (such an articulate boy...) is misguided and moronic. I don't even know where to begin in tearing your pathetic argument on this one....your childish assertion that there would be no damage, no need for disaster management, etc is just stupid.

Get a clue, assclown -- do a little research on hurricanes, and see how much damage they can do...we'll rephrase that as how much of a disaster they can create...even without the levees "and shit" failing.

My reading skills are just fine, assclown, even given your pathetic inability to articulate your thoughts clearly. what *is* clearly at fault - as is the case most times you vomit your thoughts - is your gross misunderstanding of the world around you.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Feb 14 UTC
And tendmote - you moronic assclown - "eschewing a specific type of blame"...

Oh good lord...sorry, he's actually saying that there would have been NO blame, period if they had fixed the levees "and shit"....which of course is childish thinking. So no, he's not saying don't assign specific blame...he's saying if things had been done right there woudl be no blame, period.

So the high irony here is that tendmote has completely misunderstood oscar. Oscar then fails to understand how tendmote misunderstood him...making BOTH of you look like complete morons.....

and tendmote, not assigning "a specfici type of blame"...ie. falling back to your generalized group blame...is feel-good Libtardisn in the highest and most dangerous form. Oh god forbid we assign specific blame so we can study a problem and learn the root causes of a disaster...yes, let's all group hug and have group blame, so nothign can be learned. We'll still be stupid....but we'll feel stupid together.

YAY for Libtardism!!!
oscarjd74 (100 D)
08 Feb 14 UTC
"Oh god forbid we assign specific blame so we can study a problem and learn the root causes of a disaster...yes, let's all group hug and have group blame, so nothign can be learned."

To assign blame is not at all the same thing as to "study a problem and learn the root causes". You are yourself an example of someone who assigns blame just fine without and study or learning. You just point to whichever Democrats are standing closest to the problem and blame them in witch hunt style.

If you had actually studied the problem you would not have said:

" Of course, there is blame to be placed, even if you are pointing at the levees "and shit", as the federal government had provided funding for the levees "and shit" to be upgraded years and years before but...<wait for it...> corrupt Democrats running the state never seemed to get around to actually, you know, fixing up the levees "and shit"."

Instead you would have known that the levee failures were due to a faulty levee design. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for the design and construction of levees. They are a federal agency. Therefore the "corrupt Democrats running the state" had nothing to do with it.

You're a hopeless idiot krellin, a rabidly emotional partisan single-minded idiot, incapable of rational thought.
