What is culture?
I realise that maybe we don't get this explained in school; maybe it's not part of 'common' knowledge; maybe nobody reads obiwan's posts; maybe antropology is a cryptic art, hidden away from the prying eyes of the unwashed masses... So i'd like to ask the masses.

Radical imam OK but not Chick-fil-A
Pretty provocative headline from the Boston Herald. http://www.bostonherald.com/news/opinion/op_ed/view/20220727poultry_excuse_mayor_radical_imam_ok_but_not_chick-fil-a/

The most liberal teens ever?
Hey I'm back again. I just recently discovered this forum for teens that probably has the most liberal teens I've ever seen, at least in regards to sex. I'm not sure if this is good or bad. More inside.

Points Inflation
Not that it matters, but I'm just curious. Is there any way to figure out the inflation rate of points? More people join the site, increasing the total point count, and if you drop below 100 D you get them back, again increasing the total point count.

And People Think *I* Have No Tact, Class, or Sense...
http://www.slate.com/blogs/trending/2012/07/30/idaho_billboard_compares_president_obama_to_aurora_shooting_suspect_james_holmes_.html
Really, regardless of your political views--Left, Right, Libertarian, Green, or Idontgiveadarn--that's just classless...and really, just as stupid as comparing Obama (and Bush, to be fair) to "Hitler." ...There's free speech, and then there's using free speech INTELLIGENTLY, and again...with CLASS.

email bug
I recently changed my official email address for this site. For some reason when you click my profile, it still shows my old email address. However when I go to "settings" it has the new, correct email. Can anyone suggest why this is and what I should do about it?

Gamestart alert.
I am fairly new to this site and atm my favorite games are the ones with 5 mins/round. What I would like to know is it possible to add an alarm to this site alerting me when a game starts. (and if possible whenever a new turn starts)

Some kind of external program of some sort. I don't know much about scripts but I saw a friend use it @ another site and it looked quite usefull.

Flash Mobs
Interesting about these.
Stressedlines (1559 D)
31 Jul 12 UTC
becoming more and more common, where large groups of youths run into stores, steal everything they can, in a short amount of time, and then leave.
yesterday, in chicago, a large mob of them run into a family owned store, and steal about 3000 dollars worth of jeans, beating employees who tried to stop them
I thought flash mobs were those dance groups who do these dancesin public areas without advertising them (like train stations, the street etc), but after some googling about this, this is turning into an epidemic apparently.

It beats the old fashioned mobs with their tommy guns and slightly higher ambitions, I guess. Al Capone's Mob vs The Flash Mob is a fight I'd love to see, but I fear it'd be a tad one-sided.

It also seems like a hell of a lot of risk for a small share in a garment robbery. Morality aside that just doesn't make any sense.
It makes a lot of sense actually. As the number of robbers with you increases, the chances of you getting caught decreases.
achillies27 (100 D)
31 Jul 12 UTC
But the more robbers there are, the less stuff that you steal goes to you. You have to share it.
Stressedlines (1559 D)
31 Jul 12 UTC
low risk low reward i guess. Apparently thishappens a LOT
Ah, but the more robbers there are, the more stuff they steal. Its not like they're holding up the cash registers and split the money. They're stealing the merchandise.
achillies27 (100 D)
31 Jul 12 UTC
That is also true...
smcbride1983 (517 D)
31 Jul 12 UTC
There is still low reward. You run out with 500 in clothes. That does you little good in terms of resale. Not to mention, with all that mayhem you could easily get stabbed by a clerk.
Octavious (2701 D)
31 Jul 12 UTC
The more robbers, the more media attention, the more the cops will be desperate to track you down, the more chance one of your team will do something stupid like knock over a sales assistant who hits his head and dies, the more the chance of one of your team being caught and grassing on the rest of you.

In short a bloody big risk for very little.

^ Agreed.
LanGaidin (1509 D)

Also, can we quantify a lot? I suppose it's tiring hearing how everything happens "a lot". From reading how bad things happen so frequently, it's a wonder that I make it to work and back, or the kids to school and back, or eating out, or going to the park, or simply surviving the day w/o some type of traumatic event.
Stressedlines (1559 D)

you know, I googled it, and I am trying to pick a site that is somewhatunbiased, so I picked this one, since it was one city (liberal) that got hit 6 times in 2 months.

but a quick google finds taht Boston, Philly, blatimore, Chicago, Los Angeles have all got plenty of links for multiple Flash Mobs.

Sorry stressed... that wasn't directed at you per se.. trying to keep things in context. It's just one of those terms that seems to be getting overused. Granted, happening once is more than enough (especially to those directly impacted), and I also agree that there is an increase in these events; I was simply trying to get a frame of reference defined.

I dont have an exact number, but I know what Flash Mobs USED to be, and they were cooooool. Iloved those videos, but then I saw the headline for "flash mob steals 3000 dollars " and I got confused, and decided to google it.

I say the politcal dancing flash mobs need to take back their name and dance on the heads of the thieving flash mobs. Infiltrate one of the gangs and find out when and where the next hti is going to occur then have an organized dance flash mob in frotn of each of the entrances so the punks can't escape and keep dancing untilt he cops arrive to round them all up. Take back the dance!

Drau, I loved the original flash Mobs. they were awesome. This...well, ....50 cent solutions.
Draugnar (0 DX)

I thought the original flash mobs were great as well. Just a regular day happening in a crowded place like a train station or shopping mall when suddenly a whole bunch of people around you start dancing in synch to each other to make a political/socio-economic statement. It's a hell of a lot better than having a giant fucking sit-in on Wall St. like a bunch of fucking hippies.

Countries without Armies
Mostly Costa Rica and Panama. These countries discovered that armies are bad and costly and the disbanding them was in the national interest.

The Curious Case of Jordyn Wieber Or, How Stupid ARE The IOC's Rules?
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/07/jordyn-wieber-fails-to-qualify-for-gymnastics-all-around/ I haven't watched these Olympics all that much...well, at all. (Sorry, watching it on an 8-hour delay kills the fun for me.) And I'm not a fan of gymnastics. But still...I really feel for that girl--all that work, and she's eliminated because of one of the most anti-competition rules I've ever heard of? People a dozen places below her 4th place finish qualify, but not her?

After the Assad regime falls, it's discovered that some of their chemical and biological weapons came from Iraq in 2002? Would that significantly change our understanding of the Iraq War, or is it too late?

Novel post: diplomacy question.
If a unit is being dislodged, can it still break support somewhere else? E.g. Munich support move to Bohemia from tyrolia. Can Bohemia break a support hold that Silesia is giving Vienna?

How excited do people get about the Olympics? I'm not a fan of most sports, but I love them. With the new app for online streaming, I've already watched more than I usually do all week.

World Cup - Team Ontario needs a sitter
One of the members of Team Ontario is going to be away from August 3 - August 23. We're looking for a valiant spirit (preferably from Ontario, but not necessarily) who would be willing to take over the position until the return of our team member. I will bake and send you imaginary Internet cookies if you do.

PM me if you're interested.
